    Incidence of healthcare-associated Clostridioides difficile infection in a quaternary referral university hospital in Brazil

    Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) is an important cause of diarrhea in hospitals worldwide. The incidence of CDI in Latin America has not yet been standardized. To fill this gap, the present study performed a daily active surveillance, for three months, between April to July of 2021, at a quaternary referral university hospital in Brazil. The incidence density was 9.2 cases per 10,000 patient-days. Cases were associated mostly with ribotypes 014 and 106 (44% and 22%, respectively). Ribotype 027 was not identified. The findings strongly reinforce the need for broad epidemiological studies on the incidence of CDI in Brazilian hospitals to increase the understanding, prevention, and treatment of this infection.(c) 2022 Elsevier Ltd.     Low energy atmospheric muon neutrinos in MACRO

    We present the measurement of two event samples induced by atmospheric νμ\nu_\mu of average energy Eˉν4GeV \bar {E}_\nu \sim 4 GeV. In the first sample, the neutrino interacts inside the MACRO detector producing an upward-going muon leaving the apparatus. The ratio of the number of observed to expected events is 0.57±0.05stat±0.06syst±0.14theor 0.57 \pm0.05_{stat} \pm0.06_{syst} \pm0.14_{theor} with an angular distribution similar to that expected from the Bartol atmospheric neutrino flux. The second is a mixed sample of internally produced downward-going muons and externally produced upward-going muons stopping inside the detector. These two subsamples are selected by topological criteria; the lack of timing information makes it impossible to distinguish stopping from downgoing muons. The ratio of the number of observed to expected events is 0.71±0.05stat±0.07syst±0.18theor0.71 \pm 0.05_{stat} \pm0.07_{syst} \pm0.18_{theor} . Using the ratio of the two subsamples (for which most theoretical uncertainties cancel) we can test the pathlength dependence of the oscillation hypothesis. The probability of agreement with the no-oscillation hypothesis is 5% . The deviations of our observations from the expectations has a preferred interpretation in terms of νμ\nu_\mu oscillations with maximal mixing and Δm2103÷102eV2\Delta m^2 \sim 10^{-3} \div 10^{-2} eV^2. These parameters are in agreement with our results from upward throughgoing muons, induced by νμ\nu_\mu of much higher energies.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures. Submitted to Phys. Lett.

    Study of the effects of thermal regime and alternative hormonal treatments on the reproductive performance of European eel males (Anguilla anguilla) during induced sexual maturation

    [EN] Since 1960, the European eel (Anguilla anguilla) has suffered a dramatic reduction in natural stocks. Breeding in captivity is considered an alternative, but obtaining high quality sperm seems basic on this regard. The main objective of this study was to assess the effects of three thermal regimes (two of them variable: T10 and T15; and one of them constant: T20) and three hormonal treatments with different hormones (hCG, hCGrec and PSMG) on the induction of maturation in European eel males. In the case of the thermal regimes, our results demonstrated that the onset and progression of spermiation are strongly influenced, and perhaps closely regulated, by water temperature. T20 demonstrated the best results in all the sperm parameters (volume, density, motility, kinetic features, etc.) throughout most weeks of treatment, becoming a reliable and productive method for inducing spermiation in this species. In the case of hormonal treatments, the onset and progression of spermiation in European eel males were influenced by the hormone used. In this respect, hCGrec produced the best results in all the sperm parameters including volume, density, motility, kinetic features, etc., throughout most weeks of treatment, thus becoming an effective alternative treatment to the standard hCG treatment used to induce spermiation in eel species. Moreover, hCGrec gave rise to the best economical profitability, making it possible to obtain good quality sperm samples at a lower price than by using the other two hormonal treatments. © 2012 Elsevier B.V.
