Ionic and electronic structure of sodium clusters up to N=59
We determined the ionic and electronic structure of sodium clusters with even
electron numbers and 2 to 59 atoms in axially averaged and three-dimensional
density functional calculations. A local, phenomenological pseudopotential that
reproduces important bulk and atomic properties and facilitates structure
calculations has been developed. Photoabsorption spectra have been calculated
for , , and to
. The consistent inclusion of ionic structure considerably
improves agreement with experiment. An icosahedral growth pattern is observed
for to . This finding is supported by

Final-State Phases in Charmed Meson Two-Body Nonleptonic Decays
Observed decay rates indicate large phase differences among the amplitudes
for the charge states in and but
relatively real amplitudes in the charge states for . This
feature is traced using an SU(3) flavor analysis to a sign flip in the
contribution of one of the amplitudes contributing to the latter processes in
comparison with its contribution to the other two sets. This amplitude may be
regarded as an effect of rescattering and is found to be of magnitude
comparable to others contributing to charmed particle two-body nonleptonic

Study of Cabibbo Suppressed Decays of the Ds Charmed-Strange Meson involving a KS
We study the decay of Ds meson into final states involving a Ks and report
the discovery of Cabibbo suppressed decay modes Ds -> Kspi-pi+pi+ (179 +/- 36
events) and Ds -> Kspi+ (113 +/-26 events). The branching ratios for the new
modes are Gamma(Ds -> Kspi-pi+pi+)/Gamma(Ds -> KsK-pi+pi+) = 0.18 +/- 0.04 +/-
0.05 and Gamma(Ds -> Kspi+)/Gamma(Ds -> KsK+) = 0.104 +/- 0.024 +/- 0.013.Comment: 11 pages, 6 figure
Quantifying Beta‐Galactosylceramide Kinetics in Cerebrospinal Fluid of Healthy Subjects Using Deuterium Labeling
Therapeutics promoting myelin synthesis may enhance recovery in demyelinating diseases, such as multiple sclerosis. However, no suitable method exists to quantify myelination. The turnover of galactosylceramide (myelin component) is indicative of myelination in mice, but its turnover has not been determined in humans. Here, six healthy subjects consumed 120 mL 70% D2 O daily for 70 days to label galactosylceramide. We then used mass spectrometry and compartmental modeling to quantify the turnover rate of galactosylceramide in cerebrospinal fluid. Maximum deuterium enrichment of body water ranged from 1.5-3.9%, whereas that of galactosylceramide was much lower: 0.05-0.14%. This suggests a slow turnover rate, which was confirmed by the model-estimated galactosylceramide turnover rate of 0.00168 day-1 , which corresponds to a half-life of 413 days. Additional studies in patients with multiple sclerosis are needed to investigate whether galactosylceramide turnover could be used as an outcome measure in clinical trials with remyelination therapies.PharmacologyAnalytical BioScience
Energy balance measurements over a banana orchard in the Semiarid region in the Northeast of Brazil
The objective of this work was to evaluate the reliability of eddy covariance measurements, analyzing the energy balance components, evapotranspiration and energy balance closure in dry and wet growing seasons, in a banana orchard. The experiment was carried out at a farm located within the irrigation district of Quixeré, in the Lower Jaguaribe basin, in Ceará state, Brazil. An eddy covariance system was used to measure the turbulent flux. An automatic weather station was installed in a grass field to obtain the reference evapotranspiration (ET0) from the combined FAO-Penman-Monteith method. Wind speed and vapor pressure deficit are the most important variables on the evaporative process in both growing seasons. In the dry season, the heat fluxes have a similar order of magnitude, and during the wet season the latent heat flux is the largest. The eddy covariance system had acceptable reliability in measuring heat flux, with actual evapotranspiration results comparing well with those obtained by using the water balance method. The energy balance closure had good results for the study area, with mean values of 0.93 and 0.86 for the dry and wet growing seasons respectively
The Formation and Evolution of Massive Stellar Clusters in IC 4662
We present a multiwavelength study of the formation of massive stellar
clusters, their emergence from cocoons of gas and dust, and their feedback on
surrounding matter. Using data that span from radio to optical wavelengths,
including Spitzer and Hubble ACS observations, we examine the population of
young star clusters in the central starburst region of the irregular Wolf-Rayet
galaxy IC 4662. We model the radio-to-IR spectral energy distributions of
embedded clusters to determine the properties of their HII regions and dust
cocoons (sizes, masses, densities, temperatures), and use near-IR and optical
data with mid-IR spectroscopy to constrain the properties of the embedded
clusters themselves (mass, age, extinction, excitation, abundance). The two
massive star-formation regions in IC 4662 are excited by stellar populations
with ages of ~ 4 million years and masses of ~ 3 x 10^5 M_sun (assuming a
Kroupa IMF). They have high excitation and sub-solar abundances, and they may
actually be comprised of several massive clusters rather than the single
monolithic massive compact objects known as Super Star Clusters (SSCs). Mid-IR
spectra reveal that these clusters have very high extinctions, A_V ~ 20-25 mag,
and that the dust in IC 4662 is well-mixed with the emitting gas, not in a
