    Energy-efficient traffic engineering

    The energy consumption in telecommunication networks is expected to grow considerably, especially in core networks. In this chapter, optimization of energy consumption is approached from two directions. In a first study, multilayer traffic engineering (MLTE) is used to assign energy-efficient paths and logical topology to IP traffic. The relation with traditional capacity optimization is explained, and the MLTE strategy is applied for daily traffic variations. A second study considers the core network below the IP layer, giving a detailed power consumption model.     On the roles of colour and scent in a specialized floral mimicry system

    Background and Aims Sexually deceptive orchids achieve cross-pollination by mimicking the mating signals of female insects, generally hymenopterans. This pollination mechanism is often highly specific as it is based primarily on the mimicry of mating signals, especially the female sex pheromones of the targeted pollinator. Like many deceptive orchids, the Mediterranean species Ophrys arachnitiformis shows high levels of floral trait variation, especially in the colour of the perianth, which is either green or white/pinkinsh within populations. The adaptive significance of perianth colour polymorphism and its influence on pollinator visitation rates in sexually deceptive orchids remain obscure. Methods The relative importance of floral scent versus perianth colour in pollinator attraction in this orchid pollinator mimicry system was evaluated by performing floral scent analyses by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and behavioural bioassays with the pollinators under natural conditions were performed. Key Results The relative and absolute amounts of behaviourally active compounds are identical in the two colour morphs of O. arachnitiformis. Neither presence/absence nor the colour of the perianth (green versus white) influence attractiveness of the flowers to Colletes cunicularius males, the main pollinator of O. arachnitiformis. Conclusion Chemical signals alone can mediate the interactions in highly specialized mimicry systems. Floral colour polymorphism in O. arachnitiformis is not subjected to selection imposed by C. cunicularius males, and an interplay between different non-adaptive processes may be responsible for the maintenance of floral colour polymorphism both within and among population

    Stochastic Continuum Transport Equations for Field-Scale Solute Transport: Overview of Theoretical and Experimental Results

    One-dimensional transport models that predict field-scale averaged solute fluxes are often used to estimate the risk of nonpoint source groundwater contamination by widespread surface-applied chemicals. However, within-field variability of soil hydraulic properties leads to lateral variation in local solute fluxes. When this smaller scale variability is characterized in a geostatistical sense, stochastic three-dimensional flow and transport equations can be used to predict field-scale averaged transport in terms of geostatistical parameters. We discuss the use of stochastic equations for the parameterization of equivalent one-dimensional models predicting averaged solute fluxes. First, we consider the equivalent one-dimensional convection dispersion model and the equivalent dispersivity, which characterizes the spreading of laterally averaged concentrations or solute fluxes. Second, we discuss the parameterization of a stream tube model to predict local transport variables (i.e., distributions of local concentrations and local arrival times) These local transport variables are shown to be important for predicting nonlinear local transport processes and useful for inversely inferring the spatial structure of soil properties. Stochastic flow and transport equations reveal a dependency of equivalent model parameters on transport distance and flow rate, which reflects the importance of smaller scale heterogeneities on field-scale transport. Approximate solutions of stochastic flow and transport equations are obtained for steady-state and uniform flow. The effect of transient flow conditions on transport is discussed.     Theoretical study of the OH-initiated atmospheric oxidation mechanism of perfluoro methyl vinyl ether, CF_3OCF=CF_2

    Product formation in the reaction of perfluorinated methyl vinyl ether, CF_3OCF=CF_2, with OH radicals is studied theoretically using the M06-2X/aug-cc-pVTZ and CCSD(T) levels of theory. The stable end-products in an oxidative atmosphere are predicted to be perfluorinated methyl formate, CF_3OCFO, and fluorinated glycolaldehyde, CFOCF_2OH, both with CF_2O as coproduct. The prediction of glycolaldehyde as a product contrasts with experimental data, which found perfluoro glyoxal, CFOCFO, instead. The most likely explanation for this apparent disagreement is conversion of CFOCF_2OH to CFOCFO, e.g. by multiple catalytic agents present in the reaction mixture, wall reactions, and/or photolysis. The formation routes for the glyoxal product proposed in earlier work appear unlikely, and are not supported by theoretical or related experimental work

    Atomic Layer Deposition-Based Synthesis of Photoactive TiO2 Nanoparticle Chains by Using Carbon Nanotubes as Sacrificial Templates

    Highly ordered and self supported anatase TiO2 nanoparticle chains were fabricated by calcining conformally TiO2 coated multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). During annealing, the thin tubular TiO2 coating that was deposited onto the MWCNTs by atomic layer deposition (ALD) was transformed into chains of TiO2 nanoparticles (~12 nm diameter) with an ultrahigh surface area (137 cm2 per cm2 of substrate), while at the same time the carbon from the MWCNTs was removed. Photocatalytic tests on the degradation of acetaldehyde proved that these forests of TiO2 nanoparticle chains are highly photo active under UV light because of their well crystallized anatase phase
