    A statistical study of transient events in the outer dayside magnetosphere

    The AMPTE CCE satellite frequently observed transient (1 ≤ τ ≤ 8 min) events marked by magnetic field strength increases and bipolar magnetic field signatures (peak-to-peak amplitudes ≥ 4 nT) while in the outer dayside magnetosphere. We report a survey of 59 prominant events observed from August to November 1984. The bipolar signatures and minimum variance analysis reveal that most events move poleward and antisunward, except in the immediate vicinity of local noon. Here the motion of the events appears to be better governed by the spiral/orthospiral interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation than magnetic curvature forces associated with IMF By. The IMF orientation appears to have little or no influence on event occurrence or orientation. We interpret the events in terms of solar wind/foreshock pressure pulse induced ripples on the magnetopause surface. Our results can be reconciled with those obtained in previous studies which made use of ISEE 1/2, AMPTE IRM, and AMPTE UKS observations if pressure pulses produce large-amplitude events and bursty merging (or reconnection) produces small-amplitude events

    We confirm that all the results of scanning SQUID, tunneling, ARPES, penetration depth and Raman experiments are consistent with a nonmonotonic d_{x^2-y^2} superconducting order parameter proposed in Phys.     The Three-Dipole Kicker Injection Scheme for the ALS-U Accumulator Ring

    The ALS-U light source will implement on-axis single-train swap-out injection employing an accumulator between the booster and storage rings. The accumulator ring design is a twelve period triple-bend achromat that will be installed along the inner circumference of the storage-ring tunnel. A non-conventional injection scheme will be utilized for top-off off-axis injection from the booster into the accumulator ring meant to accommodate a large 300\sim 300~nm emittance beam into a vacuum-chamber with a limiting horizontal aperture radius as small as 88 mm. The scheme incorporates three dipole kickers distributed over three sectors, with two kickers perturbing the stored beam and the third affecting both the stored and the injected beam trajectories. This paper describes this ``3DK'' injection scheme and how it fits the accumulator ring's particular requirements. We describe the design and optimization process, and how we evaluated its fitness as a solution for booster-to-accumulator ring injection.Comment: 13 pages, 20 figure

    Transcriptional regulation of PRPF31 gene expression by MSR1 repeat elements causes incomplete penetrance in retinitis pigmentosa.

    PRPF31-associated retinitis pigmentosa presents a fascinating enigma: some mutation carriers are blind, while others are asymptomatic. We identify the major molecular cause of this incomplete penetrance through three cardinal features: (1) there is population variation in the number (3 or 4) of a minisatellite repeat element (MSR1) adjacent to the PRPF31 core promoter; (2) in vitro, 3-copies of the MSR1 element can repress gene transcription by 50 to 115-fold; (3) the higher-expressing 4-copy allele is not observed among symptomatic PRPF31 mutation carriers and correlates with the rate of asymptomatic carriers in different populations. Thus, a linked transcriptional modifier decreases PRPF31 gene expression that leads to haploinsufficiency. This result, taken with other identified risk alleles, allows precise genetic counseling for the first time. We also demonstrate that across the human genome, the presence of MSR1 repeats in the promoters or first introns of genes is associated with greater population variability in gene expression indicating that copy number variation of MSR1s is a generic controller of gene expression and promises to provide new insights into our understanding of gene expression regulation

    Observation and theoretical description of the pure Fano-effect in the valence-band photo-emission of ferromagnets

    The pure Fano-effect in angle-integrated valence-band photo-emission of ferromagnets has been observed for the first time. A contribution of the intrinsic spin polarization to the spin polarization of the photo-electrons has been avoided by an appropriate choice of the experimental parameters. The theoretical description of the resulting spectra reveals a complete analogy to the Fano-effect observed before for paramagnetic transition metals. While the theoretical photo-current and spin difference spectra are found in good quantitative agreement with experiment in the case of Fe and Co only a qualitative agreement could be achieved in the case of Ni by calculations on the basis of plain local spin density approximation (LSDA). Agreement with experimental data could be improved in this case in a very substantial way by a treatment of correlation effects on the basis of dynamical mean field theory (DMFT).Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures accepted by PR
