Development and validation of the multicultural sensitivity scale for pre-service teachers
This study developed and validated an instrument to measure the
multicultural sensitivity among pre-service teachers. Items capturing the concept of multicultural sensitivity were developed through literature review, open-ended questionnaires, interviews, and focus-group discussions. The items were checked for content validity and then tested in different teacher education institutions in Mindanao, Philippines. The 45-item 7-point Likert scale was tested by 573 pre-service teachers and Exploratory Factor Analysis suggested a 28-item scale. The shortened version was tested by 461 pre-service teachers. Confirmatory Factor Analysis was conducted to verify the factor structure and results confirmed the 28-item scale composed of three factors for the personal dimension – ethnocentrism, intercultural effort, and intercultural stress – and two factors for the professional dimension – exhibiting multiculturalism and monocultural orientation. Mechanical response of stainless steel subjected to biaxial load path changes:Cruciform experiments and multi-scale modeling
We propose a multi-scale modeling approach that can simulate the microstructural and mechanical behavior of metal/alloy parts with complex geometries subjected to multi-axial load path changes. The model is used to understand the biaxial load path change behavior of 316L stainless steel cruciform samples. At the macroscale, a finite element approach is used to simulate the cruciform geometry and numerically predict the gauge stresses, which are difficult to obtain analytically. At each material point in the finite element mesh, the anisotropic viscoplastic self-consistent model is used to simulate the role of texture evolution on the mechanical response. At the single crystal level, a dislocation density based hardening law that appropriately captures the role of multi-axial load path changes on slip activity is used. The combined approach is experimentally validated using cruciform samples subjected to uniaxial load and unload followed by different biaxial reloads in the angular range [27 degrees, 90 degrees]. Polycrystalline yield surfaces before and after load path changes are generated using the full-field elasto-viscoplastic fast Fourier transform model to study the influence of the deformation history and reloading direction on the mechanical response, including the Bauschinger effect, of these cruciform samples. Results reveal that the Bauschinger effect is strongly dependent on the first loading direction and strain, intergranular and macroscopic residual stresses after first load, and the reloading angle. Self-evaluation as a tool in developing environmental responsibility
The purpose of the paper is to share the findings of an action research project aimed at exploring the impact of transformative pedagogies on pre-service teachers following an environmental education programme (EEP), offered by the University of Malta. Assessment and evaluation practices of environmental education (EE) and education for sustainable education (ESD) programmes tend to cater just for knowledge content and skills, usually failing to target the development of attitudes and values that promote sustainable lifestyles. The EEP was specifically designed to target the development of pro-environmental values by actively involving students in their learning mainly and providing opportunities for reflection and self-evaluation. The paper analyses qualitative research data obtained from evaluation questionnaires about every study unit in the programme; reflective questionnaires drawing upon the studentsí reflective journals; a focus group interview and in depth one-to-one interviews with individual students. The paper provides studentsí evaluations about the course design and effectiveness that should provide insights for course developers and evaluators seeking to develop EE/ESD programmes that address individual needs through learner centred pedagogies.peer-reviewe
Influence of Heat Treatment on Defect Structures in Single-Crystalline Blade Roots Studied by X-ray Topography and Positron Annihilation Lifetime Spectroscopy
Single-crystalline superalloy CMSX-4 is studied in the as-cast state and after heat treatment, with material being taken from turbine blade castings. The effect of the heat treatment on the defect structure of the root area near the selector/root connection is emphasized. Multiscale analysis is performed to correlate results obtained by X-ray topography and positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Electron microscopy observations were also carried out to characterize the inhomogeneity in dendritic structure. The X-ray topography was used to compare defects of the misorientation nature, occurring in as-cast and treated states. The type and concentration of defects before and after heat treatment in different root areas were determined using the PALS method, which enables voids, mono-vacancies, and dislocations to be taken into account.
