CPT Violation, Strings, and Neutral-Meson Systems

Testing A (Stringy) Model of Quantum Gravity
I discuss a specific model of space-time foam, inspired by the modern
non-perturbative approach to string theory (D-branes). The model views our
world as a three brane, intersecting with D-particles that represent stringy
quantum gravity effects, which can be real or virtual. In this picture, matter
is represented generically by (closed or open) strings on the D3 brane
propagating in such a background. Scattering of the (matter) strings off the
D-particles causes recoil of the latter, which in turn results in a distortion
of the surrounding space-time fluid and the formation of (microscopic, i.e.
Planckian size) horizons around the defects. As a mean-field result, the
dispersion relation of the various particle excitations is modified, leading to
non-trivial optical properties of the space time, for instance a non-trivial
refractive index for the case of photons or other massless probes. Such models
make falsifiable predictions, that may be tested experimentally in the
foreseeable future. I describe a few such tests, ranging from observations of
light from distant gamma-ray-bursters and ultra high energy cosmic rays, to
tests using gravity-wave interferometric devices and terrestrial particle

What factors influence Fair Access students to consider university and what do they look for?
This paper reports the findings of a participatory mixed methods study into the perceptions of Fair Access students on the factors which led them to consider accessing Higher Education. The study consisted of focus groups with thirteen first year Fair Access Students (female n=9, male n=4) studying at the university. The data from which was analysed thematically, identifying five themes (what others say, going to university to escape, influence of habitus, location and what the university offered). These five themes formed the basis of a Likert type questionnaire which was completed by 239 students (n=168 Fair Access, n=71 non-Fair Access). It was evident that students from Fair Access backgrounds have the same high aspirations as their non-Fair Access counterparts, as do their families. However they can be discouraged and disadvantaged in the application system due to a variety of reasons; within compulsory education (perceptions of teachers as well as a lack of careers advice and support), intuitional habitus of Higher Education Institutions (provision of pre-access information and support) as well as not identifying themselves as coming from a widening participation background, thus reducing the likelihood of a contextual offer. All of these could impact on the ability of an individual from a WP background being successful in obtaining a place to study in Higher Education

Central Exclusive Production in QCD
We investigate the theoretical description of the central exclusive
production process, h1+h2 -> h1+X+h2. Taking Higgs production as an example, we
sum logarithmically enhanced corrections appearing in the perturbation series
to all orders in the strong coupling. Our results agree with those originally
presented by Khoze, Martin and Ryskin except that the scale appearing in the
Sudakov factor, mu=0.62 \sqrt{\hat{s}}, should be replaced with
mu=\sqrt{\hat{s}}, where \sqrt{\hat{s}} is the invariant mass of the centrally
produced system. We confirm this result using a fixed-order calculation and
show that the replacement leads to approximately a factor 2 suppression in the
cross-section for central system masses in the range 100-500 GeV.Comment: 41 pages, 19 figures; minor typos fixed; version published in JHE
Skyrmion Multi-Walls
Skyrmion walls are topologically-nontrivial solutions of the Skyrme system
which are periodic in two spatial directions. We report numerical
investigations which show that solutions representing parallel multi-walls
exist. The most stable configuration is that of the square -wall, which in
the limit becomes the cubically-symmetric Skyrme crystal. There is
also a solution resembling parallel hexagonal walls, but this is less stable.Comment: 7 pages, 1 figur
Fair scans of the seesaw. Consequences for predictions on LFV processes
Usual analyses based on scans of the seesaw parameter-space can be biassed
since they do not cover in a fair way the complete parameter-space. More
precisely, we show that in the common "R-parametrization", many acceptable
R-matrices, compatible with the perturbativity of Yukawa couplings, are
normally disregarded from the beginning, which produces biasses in the results.
We give a straightforward procedure to scan the space of complex R-matrices in
a complete way, giving a very simple rule to incorporate the perturbativity
requirement as a condition for the entries of the R-matrix, something not
considered before. As a relevant application of this, we show that the extended
believe that BR(mu --> e, gamma) in supersymmetric seesaw models depends
strongly on the value of theta_13 is an "optical effect" produced by such
biassed scans, and does not hold after a careful analytical and numerical
study. When the complete scan is done, BR(mu --> e, gamma) gets very
insensitive to theta_13. Moreover, the values of the branching ratio are
typically larger than those quoted in the literature, due to the large number
of acceptable points in the parameter-space which were not considered before.
Including (unflavoured) leptogenesis does not introduce any further dependence
on theta_13, although decreases the typical value of BR(mu --> e, gamma).Comment: 22 pages, 5 figure
The Bulk Channel in Thermal Gauge Theories
We investigate the thermal correlator of the trace of the energy-momentum
tensor in the SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. Our goal is to constrain the spectral
function in that channel, whose low-frequency part determines the bulk
viscosity. We focus on the thermal modification of the spectral function,
. Using the operator-product expansion we give
the high-frequency behavior of this difference in terms of thermodynamic
potentials. We take into account the presence of an exact delta function
located at the origin, which had been missed in previous analyses. We then
combine the bulk sum rule and a Monte-Carlo evaluation of the Euclidean
correlator to determine the intervals of frequency where the spectral density
is enhanced or depleted by thermal effects. We find evidence that the thermal
spectral density is non-zero for frequencies below the scalar glueball mass
and is significantly depleted for .Comment: (1+25) pages, 6 figure
On the Numerical Evaluation of Loop Integrals With Mellin-Barnes Representations
An improved method is presented for the numerical evaluation of multi-loop
integrals in dimensional regularization. The technique is based on
Mellin-Barnes representations, which have been used earlier to develop
algorithms for the extraction of ultraviolet and infrared divergencies. The
coefficients of these singularities and the non-singular part can be integrated
numerically. However, the numerical integration often does not converge for
diagrams with massive propagators and physical branch cuts. In this work,
several steps are proposed which substantially improve the behavior of the
numerical integrals. The efficacy of the method is demonstrated by calculating
several two-loop examples, some of which have not been known before.Comment: 13 pp. LaTe
