    Arresting bubble coarsening: A two-bubble experiment to investigate grain growth in presence of surface elasticity

    Many two-phase materials suffer from grain-growth due to the energy cost which is associated with the interface that separates both phases. While our understanding of the driving forces and the dynamics of grain growth in different materials is well advanced by now, current research efforts address the question of how this process may be slowed down, or, ideally, arrested. We use a model system of two bubbles to explore how the presence of a finite surface elasticity may interfere with the coarsening process and the final grain size distribution. Combining experiments and modelling in the analysis of the evolution of two bubbles, we show that clear relationships can be predicted between the surface tension, the surface elasticity and the initial/final size ratio of the bubbles. We rationalise these relationships by the introduction of a modified Gibbs criterion. Besides their general interest, the present results have direct implications for our understanding of foam stability

    Bundling up carbon nanotubes through Wigner defects

    We show, using ab initio total energy density functional theory, that the so-called Wigner defects, an interstitial carbon atom right besides a vacancy, which are present in irradiated graphite can also exist in bundles of carbon nanotubes. Due to the geometrical structure of a nanotube, however, this defect has a rather low formation energy, lower than the vacancy itself, suggesting that it may be one of the most important defects that are created after electron or ion irradiation. Moreover, they form a strong link between the nanotubes in bundles, increasing their shear modulus by a sizeable amount, clearly indicating its importance for the mechanical properties of nanotube bundles.Comment: 5 pages and 4 figure

    Plucking enhanced beneath ice sheet margins: evidence from the Grampian Mountains, Scotland

    Concentrations of boulders are a common feature of landscapes modified by former mid-latitude ice sheets. In many cases, the origin of the boulders can be traced in the up-ice direction to a cliff only tens to hundreds of metres distant. The implication is that a pulse of plucking and short boulder transport occurred beneath thin ice at the end of the last glacial cycle. Here we use a case study in granite bedrock in the Dee Valley, Scotland, to constrain theory and explore the factors involved in such a late phase of plucking. Plucking is influenced by ice velocity, hydrology, effective ice pressure, the extent of subglacial cavities and bedrock characteristics. The balance between these factors favours block removal beneath thin ice near a glacier margin. At Ripe Hill in the Dee Valley, a mean exposure age of 14.2 ka on blocks supports the view that the boulder train formed at the end of ice sheet glaciation. The late pulse of plucking was further enhanced by ice flowing obliquely across vertical joints and by fluctuations in sub-marginal meltwater conditions. An implication of the study is that there is the potential for a wave of ice-marginal plucking to sweep across a landscape as an ice sheet retreats

    Limnocnida tanganyicae medusae (Cnidaria: Hydrozoa): a semiautonomous microcosm in the food web of Lake Tanganyika

    Medusae are important members of marine food webs, but are rare in lakes. In one of the largest lakes in the world, Lake Tanganyika, a small medusa (Limnocnida tanganyicae) is a prominent component of zooplankton. We used field and laboratory methods to study the ecological role of Lake Tanganyika medusae, which occasionally reached high local densities in the whole epilimnion. The largest individuals showed low amplitude, diel vertical migration which minimized their exposure to harmful UV radiation and also may be important for picocyanobacteria regularly present in the medusae. The endosymbiotic picocyanobacteria differed morphologically among medusae and were predominantly one Lake Biwa type Cyanobium sp. that typically was abundant in the water column. Under light, some medusae were net primary producers. Although nitrogen stable isotopic ratios indicated that the free-living cyanobacteria were nitrogen-fixers, the picocyanobacteria in medusae obtained nitrogen predominantly from their host. Stable isotopic ratios of carbon and nitrogen further suggested that copepods were the most likely prey for the medusae. Lake Tanganyika medusae apparently base their metabolism both on animal and plant sources, with possible internal cycling of nutrients; however, the role of picocyanobacteria gardening in the Lake Tanganyika ecosystem and its medusae requires quantification

    FeP Nanocatalyst with Preferential [010] Orientation Boosts the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction in Polymer-Electrolyte Membrane Electrolyzer

    The development of nonprecious metal electrocatalysts for polymer-electrolyte membrane (PEM) water electrolysis is a milestone for the technology, which currently relies on rare and expensive platinum-group metals. Half-cell measurements have shown iron phosphide materials to be promising alternative hydrogen evolution electrocatalysts, but their realistic performance in flow-through devices remains unexplored. To fill this gap, we report herein the activity and durability of FeP nanocatalyst under application-relevant conditions. Our facile synthesis route proceeds via impregnation of an iron complex on conductive carbon support followed by phosphorization, giving rise to highly crystalline nanoparticles with predominantly exposed [010] facets, which accounts for the high electrocatalytic activity. The performance of FeP gas diffusion electrodes toward hydrogen evolution was examined under application-relevant conditions in a single cell PEM water electrolysis at 22 °C. The FeP cathode exhibited a current density of 0.2 A cm–2 at 2.06 V, corresponding to a difference of merely 0.07 W cm–2 in power input as compared to state-of-the-art Pt cathode, while outperforming other nonprecious cathodes operated at similar temperature. Quantitative product analysis of our PEM device excluded the presence of side reactions and provided strong experimental evidence that our cell operates with 84–100% Faradaic efficiencies and with 4.1 kWh Nm–3 energy consumption. The FeP cathodes exhibited stable performance of over 100 h at constant operation, while their suitability with the intermittency of renewable sources was demonstrated upon 36 h operation at variable power inputs. Overall, the performance as well as our preliminary cost analysis reveal the high potential of FeP for practical applications.</p

    Vulnerability of groundwater resources to interaction with river water in a boreal catchment

    A low-altitude aerial infrared (AIR) survey was conducted to identify hydraulic connections between aquifers and rivers and to map spatial surface temperature patterns along boreal rivers. In addition, the stable isotopic compositions (delta O-18, delta D), dissolved silica (DSi) concentrations and electrical conductivity of water in combination with AIR data were used as tracers to verify the observed groundwater discharge into the river system in a boreal catchment. Based on low temperature anomalies in the AIR survey, around 370 groundwater discharge sites were located along the main river channel and its tributaries (203 km altogether). On the basis of the AIR survey, the longitudinal temperature patterns of the studied rivers differed noticeably. The stable isotopes and DSi composition revealed major differences between the studied rivers. The groundwater discharge locations identified in the proximity of 12 municipal water intake plants during the low-flow seasons should be considered as potential risk areas for water intake plants during flood periods (groundwater quality deterioration due to bank infiltration), and should be taken under consideration in river basin management under changing climatic situations.Peer reviewe

    Systematically missing confounders in individual participant data meta-analysis of observational cohort studies.

    One difficulty in performing meta-analyses of observational cohort studies is that the availability of confounders may vary between cohorts, so that some cohorts provide fully adjusted analyses while others only provide partially adjusted analyses. Commonly, analyses of the association between an exposure and disease either are restricted to cohorts with full confounder information, or use all cohorts but do not fully adjust for confounding. We propose using a bivariate random-effects meta-analysis model to use information from all available cohorts while still adjusting for all the potential confounders. Our method uses both the fully adjusted and the partially adjusted estimated effects in the cohorts with full confounder information, together with an estimate of their within-cohort correlation. The method is applied to estimate the association between fibrinogen level and coronary heart disease incidence using data from 154,012 participants in 31 cohort

    Phenoloxidase activity acts as a mosquito innate immune response against infection with semliki forest virus

    Several components of the mosquito immune system including the RNA interference (RNAi), JAK/STAT, Toll and IMD pathways have previously been implicated in controlling arbovirus infections. In contrast, the role of the phenoloxidase (PO) cascade in mosquito antiviral immunity is unknown. Here we show that conditioned medium from the Aedes albopictus-derived U4.4 cell line contains a functional PO cascade, which is activated by the bacterium Escherichia coli and the arbovirus Semliki Forest virus (SFV) (Togaviridae; Alphavirus). Production of recombinant SFV expressing the PO cascade inhibitor Egf1.0 blocked PO activity in U4.4 cell- conditioned medium, which resulted in enhanced spread of SFV. Infection of adult female Aedes aegypti by feeding mosquitoes a bloodmeal containing Egf1.0-expressing SFV increased virus replication and mosquito mortality. Collectively, these results suggest the PO cascade of mosquitoes plays an important role in immune defence against arboviruses
