    A note on some constants related to the zeta-function and their relationship with the Gregory coefficients

    In this paper new series for the first and second Stieltjes constants (also known as generalized Euler's constant), as well as for some closely related constants are obtained. These series contain rational terms only and involve the so-called Gregory coefficients, which are also known as (reciprocal) logarithmic numbers, Cauchy numbers of the first kind and Bernoulli numbers of the second kind. In addition, two interesting series with rational terms are given for Euler's constant and the constant ln(2*pi), and yet another generalization of Euler's constant is proposed and various formulas for the calculation of these constants are obtained. Finally, in the paper, we mention that almost all the constants considered in this work admit simple representations via the Ramanujan summation

    Two-photon exchange in elastic electron-proton scattering : QCD factorization approach

    We estimate the two-photon exchange contribution to elastic electron-proton scattering at large momentum transfer Q2Q^2. It is shown that the leading two-photon exchange amplitude behaves as 1/Q41/Q^4 relative to the one-photon amplitude, and can be expressed in a model independent way in terms of the leading twist nucleon distribution amplitudes. Using several models for the nucleon distribution amplitudes, we provide estimates for existing data and for ongoing experiments.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    The cellular dynamics of bone remodeling: a mathematical model

    The mechanical properties of vertebrate bone are largely determined by a process which involves the complex interplay of three different cell types. This process is called {\it bone remodeling}, and occurs asynchronously at multiple sites in the mature skeleton. The cells involved are bone resorbing osteoclasts, bone matrix producing osteoblasts and mechanosensing osteocytes. These cells communicate with each other by means of autocrine and paracrine signaling factors and operate in complex entities, the so-called bone multicellular units (BMU). To investigate the BMU dynamics in silico, we develop a novel mathematical model resulting in a system of nonlinear partial differential equations with time delays. The model describes the osteoblast and osteoclast populations together with the dynamics of the key messenger molecule RANKL and its decoy receptor OPG. Scaling theory is used to address parameter sensitivity and predict the emergence of pathological remodeling regimes. The model is studied numerically in one and two space dimensions using finite difference schemes in space and explicit delay equation solvers in time. The computational results are in agreement with in vivo observations and provide new insights into the role of the RANKL/OPG pathway in the spatial regulation of bone remodeling

    Psychological pressure in competitive environments: Evidence from a randomized natural experiment: Comment

    Apesteguia and Palacios-Huerta (forthcoming) report for a sample of 129 shootouts from various seasons in ten different competitions that teams kicking first in soccer penalty shootouts win significantly more often than teams kicking second. Collecting data for the entire history of six major soccer competitions we cannot replicate their result. Teams kicking first win only 53.4% of 262 shootouts in our data, which is not significantly different from random. Our findings have two implications: (1) Apesteguia and Palacios-Huerta’s results are not generally robust. (2) Using specific subsamples without a coherent criterion for data selection might lead to non-representative findings

    Emotion and language: valence and arousal affect word recognition

    Emotion influences most aspects of cognition and behavior, but emotional factors are conspicuously absent from current models of word recognition. The influence of emotion on word recognition has mostly been reported in prior studies on the automatic vigilance for negative stimuli, but the precise nature of this relationship is unclear. Various models of automatic vigilance have claimed that the effect of valence on response times is categorical, an inverted U, or interactive with arousal. In the present study, we used a sample of 12,658 words and included many lexical and semantic control factors to determine the precise nature of the effects of arousal and valence on word recognition. Converging empirical patterns observed in word-level and trial-level data from lexical decision and naming indicate that valence and arousal exert independent monotonic effects: Negative words are recognized more slowly than positive words, and arousing words are recognized more slowly than calming words. Valence explained about 2% of the variance in word recognition latencies, whereas the effect of arousal was smaller. Valence and arousal do not interact, but both interact with word frequency, such that valence and arousal exert larger effects among low-frequency words than among high-frequency words. These results necessitate a new model of affective word processing whereby the degree of negativity monotonically and independently predicts the speed of responding. This research also demonstrates that incorporating emotional factors, especially valence, improves the performance of models of word recognition

    Notes on the Biology of \u3ci\u3eSaperda Imitans\u3c/i\u3e Infesting Wind-Damaged Black Cherry in Allegheny Hardwood Stands

    This paper reports observations made on the life history and biology of Saperda imitans Felt & Joutel in black cherry, Prunus serotina Ehrh. S. imitans was the principle longhorned beetle (Coleoptera: Cerambycidae) reared from bolts collected from 68 wind-thrown black cherry at the Kane Experimental Forest in northwestern Pennsylvania. It was also the only species that overwintered in the sapwood/outer heartwood, and thus impacted the commercial value of these trees. Gaurotes cyanipennis (Say) was the only other cerambycid reared from caged bolts taken from wind-thrown black cherry. The cerambycids Stenocorus vittiger (Randall), Arthophylax attenuatus (Haldman), G. cyanipennis, Neoclytus acuminatus acuminatus (F.), Clytus ruricola (Olivier), Cyrtophorus verrucosus (Olivier), and Astylopsis macula (Say) were captured in ethanol-baited Lindgren® funnel traps placed in wind-thrown stands, but were not reared from cherry logs. S. imitans was not caught in these traps and apparently it is not attracted to ethanol baits. Neither S. imitans nor G. cyanipennis were reared from completely uprooted trees (dead) or trees with a major portion of the root system still embedded in soil (live). Preferred hosts were black cherry with moist phloem and epicormic branches with \u3c25% live foliage (dying). The density of S. imitans galleries was similar for dying trees in each of three diameter classes; 20-30 cm, \u3e30-40 cm, \u3e40cm. Samples taken from the upper half of the first 5 m of black cherry boles had a higher density of galleries than did those from the lower half. The beetle was recovered in low numbers from branches \u3c10 cm in basal diameter. S. imitans is univoltine and in 2007 peak emergence of adults occurred from late May to early June. Results identified the condition of wind-damaged black cherry most susceptible to an infestation of S. imitans. This information can be used to establish salvage priorities following a weather event such as this
