Modeling the input history of programs for improved instruction-memory performance
When a program is loaded into memory for execution, the relative position of
its basic blocks is crucial, since loading basic blocks that are unlikely to be
executed first places them high in the instruction-memory hierarchy only to be
dislodged as the execution goes on. In this paper we study the use of Bayesian
networks as models of the input history of a program. The main point is the
creation of a probabilistic model that persists as the program is run on
different inputs and at each new input refines its own parameters in order to
reflect the program's input history more accurately. As the model is thus
tuned, it causes basic blocks to be reordered so that, upon arrival of the next
input for execution, loading the basic blocks into memory automatically takes
into account the input history of the program. We report on extensive
experiments, whose results demonstrate the efficacy of the overall approach in
progressively lowering the execution times of a program on identical inputs
placed randomly in a sequence of varied inputs. We provide results on selected
SPEC CINT2000 programs and also evaluate our approach as compared to the gcc
level-3 optimization and to Pettis-Hansen reordering
OBJECTIVE:
To assess the predictors of de novo atrial fibrillation in patients in a non-cardiac intensive care unit.
METHODS:
A total of 418 hospitalized patients were analyzed between January and September 2016 in a non-cardiac intensive care unit. Clinical characteristics, interventions, and biochemical markers were recorded during hospitalization. In-hospital mortality and length of hospital stay in the intensive care unit were also evaluated.
RESULTS:
A total of 310 patients were included. The mean age of the patients was 61.0 ± 18.3 years, 49.4% were male, and 23.5% presented de novo atrial fibrillation. The multivariate model identified previous stroke (OR = 10.09; p = 0.016) and elevated levels of pro-B type natriuretic peptide (proBNP, OR = 1.28 for each 1,000pg/mL increment; p = 0.004) as independent predictors of de novo atrial fibrillation. Analysis of the proBNP receiver operating characteristic curve for prediction of de novo atrial fibrillation revealed an area under the curve of 0.816 (p 5,666pg/mL. There were no differences in mortality (p = 0.370), but the lengths of hospital stay (p = 0.002) and stay in the intensive care unit (p = 0.031) were higher in patients with de novo atrial fibrillation.
CONCLUSIONS:
A history of previous stroke and elevated proBNP during hospitalization were independent predictors of de novo atrial fibrillation in the polyvalent intensive care unit. The proBNP is a useful and easy- and quick-access tool in the stratification of atrial fibrillation risk.

Tinea Capitis in Adults. A Diagnosis to Consider?
Monte Carlo simulations of 2d hard core lattice gases
Monte Carlo simulations are used to study lattice gases of particles with
extended hard cores on a two dimensional square lattice. Exclusions of one and
up to five nearest neighbors (NN) are considered. These can be mapped onto hard
squares of varying side length, (in lattice units), tilted by some
angle with respect to the original lattice. In agreement with earlier studies,
the 1NN exclusion undergoes a continuous order-disorder transition in the Ising
universality class. Surprisingly, we find that the lattice gas with exclusions
of up to second nearest neighbors (2NN) also undergoes a continuous phase
transition in the Ising universality class, while the Landau-Lifshitz theory
predicts that this transition should be in the universality class of the XY
model with cubic anisotropy. The lattice gas of 3NN exclusions is found to
undergo a discontinuous order-disorder transition, in agreement with the
earlier transfer matrix calculations and the Landau-Lifshitz theory. On the
other hand, the gas of 4NN exclusions once again exhibits a continuous phase
transition in the Ising universality class -- contradicting the predictions of
the Landau-Lifshitz theory. Finally, the lattice gas of 5NN exclusions is found
to undergo a discontinuous phase transition.Comment: 13 pages, lots of figure
Use of ultramicroindentation to evaluate the degradation of sputtered coatings
The aim of this research work was to study the influence of chemical degradation on the mechanical properties of the non-degraded zones of sputtered W-N-Ti coatings. For this, an ultramicroindentation technique has been used before and after degradation, either on the zones between the pits in the corroded samples, or on the non-oxidised layers after removal of the top degraded layers. By using different applied loads it was possible to obtain results with and without the influence of the substrate. Thus, two types of results were obtained, those determined by using an empirical model, which eliminates the influence of the substrate, and those measured directly.Very small differences of less than 20% were obtained in the measured values before and after degradation, indicating that the non-degraded zones maintain their as-deposited mechanical properties.http://www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/B6TW4-3VGSFTN-Y/1/d6747ea11390bd13ea164c97933b791
