Formation of Aluminum Particles with Shell Morphology during Pressureless Spark Plasma Sintering of Fe-Al Mixtures: Current-Related or Kirkendall Effect?

    Get PDF
A need to deeper understand the influence of electric current on the structure and properties of metallic materials consolidated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) stimulates research on inter-particle interactions, bonding and necking processes in low-pressure or pressureless conditions as favoring technique-specific local effects when electric current passes through the underdeveloped inter-particle contacts. Until now, inter-particle interactions during pressureless SPS have been studied mainly for particles of the same material. In this work, we focused on the interactions between particles of dissimilar materials in mixtures of micrometer-sized Fe and Al powders forming porous compacts during pressureless SPS at 500-650 °C. Due to the chemical interaction between Al and Fe, necks of conventional shape did not form between the dissimilar particles. At the early interaction stages, the Al particles acquired shell morphology. It was shown that this morphology change was not related to the influence of electric current but was due to the Kirkendall effect in the Fe-Al system and particle rearrangement in a porous compact. No experimental evidence of melting or melt ejection during pressureless SPS of the Fe-Al mixtures or Fe and Al powders sintered separately was observed. Porous FeAl-based compacts could be obtained from Fe-40at.%Al mixtures by pressureless SPS at 650 °C

Mechanochemistry of Hexagonal Boron Nitride: 1. Destruction and Amorphization During Mechanical Treatment

    Get PDF
The regularities of the mechanical activation of hexagonal boron nitride are analyzed using the X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and adsorption methods. At the initial state of mechanical activation, the main process is material destruction. At this stage, the specific surface area increases to 400 m2/g and crystallographically oriented nanosized needles are formed. At the same time, boron nitride crystal structure is disordered with an increase in interplanar distance d(002). The disordering is assumed to be due to a shift along planes (001). At a specific dose of supplied mechanical energy above 6–8 kJ/g, the disordering processes dominate and the material is amorphized. At this stage, the specific surface area of samples decreases

Destruction, Amorphization and Reactivity of Nano-BN Under Ball Milling

The processes of mechanical activation of a hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) and its reactivity upon interaction with hydrogen and water were investigated using X-ray, TEM, Microdiffraction, Dynamic Light Scattering, FTIR-spectroscopy, adsorption (BET). Initial h-BN samples were monocrystalline plates 70–80 nm thick. Mechanical treatment of h-BN is accompanied by plate splitting and formation of crystallographically oriented “rods.” The rod thickness gradually diminishes to less than 5 nm. Specific surface area of the rods (400 m2/g), is found to be equal to the outer geometrical surface of rods. As nanocrystallites form “c” parameter of h-BN increases. When nanocrystallites are less than several nanometers in size, mechanical treatment results in BN amorphization; in this case specific surface of the system begins to decrease. Splitting of BN plates in the atmosphere of hydrogen is accompanied by the material hydrogenation and formation of BH and NH bonds. The amount of adsorbed hydrogen corresponds to monolayer filling. The amorphous part of activated BN interacts with water even at room temperature

Inclusive-jet cross sections have been measured in the reaction ep→e+jet+X for photon virtuality Q 2γp centre-of-mass energies in the region 142γp-1. Jets were identified using the k T, anti-k T or SIScone jet algorithms in the laboratory frame. Single-differential cross sections are presented as functions of the jet transverse energy, ETjet, and pseudorapidity, jet, for jets with ETjet\u3e17 GeV and -1\u3c je

Search for Single-top Production in ep Collisions at HERA

    Get PDF
A search for single-top production, ep→etX, has been performed with the ZEUS detector at HERA using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 0.37 fb -1. No evidence for top production was found, consistent with the expectation from the Standard Model. Limits were computed for single-top production via flavour changing neutral current transitions involving a neutral electroweak vector boson, γ or Z. The result was combined with a previous ZEUS result yielding a total luminosity of 0.50 fb -1. A 95% credibility level upper limit of 0.13 pb was obtained for the cross section at the centre-of-mass energy of √s=315 GeV. © 2012 Elsevier B.V

© The Author(s) 2011. The production of beauty quarks in ep interactions has been studied with the ZEUS detector at HERA for exchanged four-momentum squared Q2 \u3e 10 GeV2, using an integrated luminosity of 363 pb-1. The beauty events were identified using electrons from semileptonic b decays with a transverse momentum 0.9 \u3c peT \u3c 8 GeV and pseudorapidity |ηe| \u3c 1.5. Cross sections for beauty production were measured and compared with next-to-leadingorder QCD calculations. The beauty contribution to the proton structure function F2 was extracted from the doubledifferential cross section as a function of Bjorken-x and Q2

Inclusive Dijet Cross Sections in Neutral Current Deep Inelastic Scattering at HERA

    Get PDF
Single- and double-differential inclusive dijet cross sections in neutral current deep inelastic ep scattering have been measured with the ZEUS detector using an integrated luminosity of 374 pb-1. The measurement was performed at large values of the photon virtuality, Q2, between 125 and 20 000 GeV2. The jets were reconstructed with the kT cluster algorithm in the Breit reference frame and selected by requiring their transverse energies in the Breit frame, ET,Bjet, to be larger than 8 GeV. In addition, the invariant mass of the dijet system, Mjj, was required to be greater than 20 GeV. The cross sections are described by the predictions of next-to-leading-order QCD. © 2010 The Author(s)

Search for First-generation Leptoquarks at HERA

    Get PDF
A search for first-generation leptoquarks was performed in electron-proton and positron-proton collisions recorded with the ZEUS detector at HERA in 2003-2007 using an integrated luminosity of 366pb-1. Final states with an electron and jets or with missing transverse momentum and jets were analyzed, searching for resonances or other deviations from the standard model predictions. No evidence for any leptoquark signal was found. The data were combined with data previously taken at HERA, resulting in a total integrated luminosity of 498pb-1. Limits on the Yukawa coupling, λ, of leptoquarks were set as a function of the leptoquark mass for different leptoquark types within the Buchmüller-Rückl-Wyler model. Leptoquarks with a coupling λ=0.3 are excluded for masses up to 699 GeV. © 2012 American Physical Society

    Get PDF
The cross sections for inelastic photoproduction of J/ψ and ψ′ mesons have been measured in ep collisions with the ZEUS detector at HERA, using an integrated luminosity of 468 pb-1 collected in the period 1996-2007. The ψ′ to J/ψ cross section ratio was measured in the range 0.55 \u3c z \u3c 0.9 and 60 \u3c W \u3c 190 GeV as a function of W, z and pT. Here W denotes the photon-proton centre-of-mass energy, z is the fraction of the incident photon energy carried by the meson and p T is the transverse momentum of the meson with respect to the beam axis. The J/ψ cross sections were measured for 0.1 \u3c z \u3c 0.9, 60 \u3c W \u3c 240 GeV and pT \u3e 1 GeV. Theoretical predictions within the non-relativistic QCD framework including NLO colour-singlet and colour-octet contributions were compared to the data, as were predictions based on the k T-factorisation approach. © 2013 SISSA
