On compatibility between isogenies and polarisations of abelian varieties
We discuss the notion of polarised isogenies of abelian varieties, that is,
isogenies which are compatible with given principal polarisations. This is
motivated by problems of unlikely intersections in Shimura varieties. Our aim
is to show that certain questions about polarised isogenies can be reduced to
questions about unpolarised isogenies or vice versa.
Our main theorem concerns abelian varieties B which are isogenous to a fixed
abelian variety A. It establishes the existence of a polarised isogeny A to B
whose degree is polynomially bounded in n, if there exist both an unpolarised
isogeny A to B of degree n and a polarised isogeny A to B of unknown degree. As
a further result, we prove that given any two principally polarised abelian
varieties related by an unpolarised isogeny, there exists a polarised isogeny
between their fourth powers.
The proofs of both theorems involve calculations in the endomorphism algebras
of the abelian varieties, using the Albert classification of these endomorphism
algebras and the classification of Hermitian forms over division algebras
Compact pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor
It is shown that in every dimension n=3j+2, j=1,2,3,..., there exist compact
pseudo-Riemannian manifolds with parallel Weyl tensor, which are
Ricci-recurrent, but neither conformally flat nor locally symmetric, and
represent all indefinite metric signatures. The manifolds in question are
diffeomorphic to nontrivial torus bundles over the circle. They all arise from
a construction that a priori yields bundles over the circle, having as the
fibre either a torus, or a 2-step nilmanifold with a complete flat torsionfree
connection; our argument only realizes the torus case.Comment: 19 page
Vortex matter in superconducting mesoscopic disks: Structure, magnetization, and phase transitions
The dense vortex matter structure and associated magnetization are calculated
for type-II superconducting mesoscopic disks. The magnetization exhibits
generically first-order phase transitions as the number of vortices changes by
one and presents two well-defined regimes: A non-monotonous evolution of the
magnitude of the magnetization jumps signals the presence of a vortex glass
structure which is separated by a second-order phase transition at
from a condensed state of vortices (giant vortex) where the magnitude of the
jumps changes monotonously. We compare our results with Hall magnetometry
measurements by Geim et al. (Nature 390, 259 (1997)) and claim that the
magnetization exhibits clear traces of the presence of these vortex glass
states.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Nanosized superconducting constrictions
Nanowires of lead between macroscopic electrodes are produced by means of an
STM. Magnetic fields may destroy the superconductivity in the electrodes, while
the wire remains in the superconducting state. The properties of the resulting
microscopic Josephson junctions are investigated.Comment: 3 pages,3 eps figures include
Influence of the confinement geometry on surface superconductivity
The nucleation field for surface superconductivity, , depends on the
geometrical shape of the mesoscopic superconducting sample and is substantially
enhanced with decreasing sample size. As an example we studied circular,
square, triangular and wedge shaped disks. For the wedge the nucleation field
diverges as with decreasing angle () of
the wedge, where is the bulk upper critical field.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Phase transition curves for mesoscopic superconducting samples
We compute the phase transition curves for mesoscopic superconductors.
Special emphasis is given to the limiting shape of the curve when the magnetic
flux is large. We derive an asymptotic formula for the ground state of the
Schr\"odinger equation in the presence of large applied flux. The expansion is
shown to be sensitive to the smoothness of the domain. The theoretical results
are compared to recent experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 1 figur
In this paper, five new ternary tricarbonylrhenium(I) complexes based on a pyridinetriazole moiety, the so-called pyta, have been investigated. These cationic complexes of the general formula [Re(CO)3(pyta-COOMe)L] (L = substituted pyridine derivatives) combine a carboxylate functionalization, for further biomolecule conjugation, with a metal chelating site – a pyta-based tricarbonylrhenium moiety – which can act as a fluorescent reporter. The complexes have been prepared using a two-steps pathway involved the activation of [Re(CO)3Cl(bipy)] with triflate silver salts in the presence of acetonitrile followed by the thermally activated substitution of the acetonitrile adduct by commercially available substituted pyridine derivatives. They have been prepared from modest to good yields, fully characterized by means of NMR, IR and mass spectrometry, and their photophysical properties have been investigated. Upon excitation into the MLCT band of each complex (absorption band at ca. 300 nm), three of them exhibit a bright green luminescence centered at c.a. 494 nm, with a quantum yield of 0.60% in acetonitrile. These interesting photophysical features make them potential fluorescent cellular imaging agents. Moreover, thank to their ancillary ligand, they could be also considered as interesting scaffolds for the preparation of dual-imaging heterobimetallic species. Vortex structure of thin mesoscopic disks in the presence of an inhomogeneous magnetic field
The vortex states in a thin mesoscopic disk are investigated within the
phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau theory in the presence of different ''model''
magnetic field profiles with zero average field which may result from a
ferromagnetic disk or circulating currents in a loop near the superconductor.
We calculated the dependences of both the ground and metastable states on the
magnitude and shape of the magnetic field profile for different values of the
order parameter angular moment, i.e. the vorticity. The regions of existence of
the multi-vortex state and the giant vortex state are found. We analysed the
phase transitions between these states and studied the contribution from
ring-shaped vortices. A new transition between different multi-vortex
configurations as the ground state is found. Furthermore, we found a vortex
state consisting of a central giant vortex surrounded by a collection of
anti-vortices which are located in a ring around this giant vortex. The limit
to a disk with an infinite radius, i.e. a film, will also be discussed. We also
extended our results to ''real'' magnetic field profiles and to the case in
which an external homogeneous magnetic field is present.Comment: 17 pages, 23 figures. Submitted to PR
