    Nuclear recoil effect on the magnetic-dipole decay rates of atomic levels

    The effect of finite nuclear mass on the magnetic-dipole transition probabilities between fine-structure levels of the same term is investigated. Based on a rigorous QED approach a nonrelativistic formula for the recoil correction to first order in m_e/M is derived.     Multiexcitons confined within a sub-excitonic volume: Spectroscopic and dynamical signatures of neutral and charged biexcitons in ultrasmall semiconductor nanocrystals

    The use of ultrafast gating techniques allows us to resolve both spectrally and temporally the emission from short-lived neutral and negatively charged biexcitons in ultrasmall (sub-10 nm) CdSe nanocrystals (nanocrystal quantum dots). Because of forced overlap of electronic wave functions and reduced dielectric screening, these states are characterized by giant interaction energies of tens (neutral biexcitons) to hundreds (charged biexcitons) of meV. Both types of biexcitons show extremely short lifetimes (from sub-100 picoseconds to sub-picosecond time scales) that rapidly shorten with decreasing nanocrystal size. These ultrafast relaxation dynamics are explained in terms of highly efficient nonradiative Auger recombination.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, to be published in Phys. Rev.

    Ordering of Energy Levels in Heisenberg Models and Applications

    In a recent paper we conjectured that for ferromagnetic Heisenberg models the smallest eigenvalues in the invariant subspaces of fixed total spin are monotone decreasing as a function of the total spin and called this property ferromagnetic ordering of energy levels (FOEL). We have proved this conjecture for the Heisenberg model with arbitrary spins and coupling constants on a chain. In this paper we give a pedagogical introduction to this result and also discuss some extensions and implications. The latter include the property that the relaxation time of symmetric simple exclusion processes on a graph for which FOEL can be proved, equals the relaxation time of a random walk on the same graph.     Photoproduction of Positive Mesons from Hydrogen: Results

    The center-of-mass differential cross section for photoproduction of positive pions from hydrogen has been measured by the methods described in the two previous abstracts, in the angular range 40° to 150°, for photons from 220 to 475 Mev. (Photon energies refer to the Laboratory System.) Results obtained by the two methods are in essential agreement. At 90°, dσ/dω has a maximum of 2.7 X 10^(-29) cm^2/sterad near 280 Mev and falls by a factor 5 at 450 Mev. The maximum in the excitation curve is even more pronounced at larger angles, but less pronounced at smaller ones. At 40° (c.m.) the peak occurs near 350 Mev and at 450 Mev the cross section has decreased only to 0.7 the, peak value. Angular distributions in the center-of-mass system show a marked assymetry about 90°, which changes character from low energy to high. Below 325 Mev, there ii a backward maximum, whereas above 375 Mev, there is a forward maximum. The total cross section reaches a maximum near 290 Mev and decreases by about a factor 3 at 450 Mev. The results below 300 Mev agree with the data already reported from Berkeley and Cornell

    Risk Factors for Dementia in a Senegalese Elderly Population Aged 65 Years and Over

    Background: With the aging of the population, dementia is increasing worldwide. The objective of this study was to identify risk factors for dementia in an elderly population utilizing a primary health care service in Dakar, Senegal. Methods: Through a cross-sectional study conducted from March 2004 to December 31, 2005, 507 elderly patients aged ≥65 years who came to the Social and Medical Center of IPRES, Dakar, Senegal, were first screened with the screening interview questionnaire ‘Aging in Senegal’. Those who were cognitively impaired underwent a clinical examination to detect dementia. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate logistic regression analyses were done. Results: The whole population had a mean age of 72.4 years (±5.2) and was mostly male, married, and non-educated. Hypertension, arthritis, and gastrointestinal diseases were the main health conditions reported in the past medical history. Smoking was important while alcohol consumption was rare. Social network was high. Forty-five patients (8.87%) had dementia. In the multivariate model, only advanced age, education, epilepsy, and family history of dementia were independently associated with dementia. Conclusion: The risk factors identified are also found in developed countries confirming their role in dementia. It is important to take dementia into consideration in Senegal and to sensitize the community for prevention

    Pharmacodynamics of Posaconazole in Experimental Invasive Pulmonary Aspergillosis: Utility of Serum Galactomannan as a Dynamic Endpoint of Antifungal Efficacy

    Background. Aspergillus galactomannan antigenemia is an accepted tool for the diagnosis of invasive pulmonary aspergillosis (IPA) in neutropenic patients. Little is known, however, about the utility of this biomarker to assess the efficacy of antifungal therapies. / Methods. The pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics (PK/PD) of posaconazole in treatment and prophylaxis were investigated in the persistently neutropenic rabbit model of Aspergillus fumigatus IPA at doses between 2 and 20 mg/kg and day. Sparse plasma sampling was used to obtain PK data at steady state, and the serum galactomannan index (GMI), as a dynamic endpoint of antifungal response, was obtained every other day in addition to conventional outcome parameters including survival and fungal tissue burden. Nonparametric PK/PD model building was performed using the Pmetrics Package in R. / Results. A one-compartment model with linear elimination best described the PK of posaconazole. The PD effect of posaconazole exposure in plasma on the GMI in serum was best described by a dynamic Hill-functions reflecting growth and kill of the fungus. Through calculations of the AUC0-24h at steady state, the exposure-response relationship between posaconazole and the GMI for treatment followed a sigmoidal function with an asymptote forming above an AUC0-24h of 30 mg*h/L. All prophylactic doses were able to control the fungal burden. / Conclusions. A nonparametric population PK/PD model adequately described the effect of posaconazole in prophylaxis and treatment of experimental IPA. An AUC0-24h greater than 30 mg*h/L was associated with adequate resolution of the GMI, which is well in support of previously suggested exposure-response relationships in humans

    Genetic Code Mutations: The Breaking of a Three Billion Year Invariance

    The genetic code has been unchanging for some three billion years in its canonical ensemble of encoded amino acids, as indicated by the universal adoption of this ensemble by all known organisms. Code mutations beginning with the encoding of 4-fluoro-Trp by Bacillus subtilis, initially replacing and eventually displacing Trp from the ensemble, first revealed the intrinsic mutability of the code. This has since been confirmed by a spectrum of other experimental code alterations in both prokaryotes and eukaryotes. To shed light on the experimental conversion of a rigidly invariant code to a mutating code, the present study examined code mutations determining the propagation of Bacillus subtilis on Trp and 4-, 5- and 6-fluoro-tryptophans. The results obtained with the mutants with respect to cross-inhibitions between the different indole amino acids, and the growth effects of individual nutrient withdrawals rendering essential their biosynthetic pathways, suggested that oligogenic barriers comprising sensitive proteins which malfunction with amino acid analogues provide effective mechanisms for preserving the invariance of the code through immemorial time, and mutations of these barriers open up the code to continuous change
