The estimation of neutrino fluxes produced by proton-proton collisions at TeV of the LHC
Intense and collimated neutrino beams are produced by charm and beauty
particle decays from proton-proton collisions at the LHC. A neutrino experiment
would be run parasitically without interrupting the LHC physics program during
the collider run. We estimate the neutrino fluxes from proton-proton collisions
at TeV of the LHC with the designed luminosity, 10^{34} \lumi.
By mounting about 200 tons of fiducial volume of a neutrino detector at 300
\m away from the interaction point, about 150,000 of charged current neutrino
events per year can be observable.Comment: 8 pages, Accepted in JHE
Relationship between Breast Cancer Surgical Treatment and Psychiatric Symptomatology: Which Sociodemographic and Clinical Factors Could Influence It? A Preliminary Study
This study aimed to investigate psychiatric symptomatology in a sample of patients affected by breast cancer undergoing surgery, evaluating the potential mediators on perceived stress levels, depression and hopelessness. The study was conducted on eighty-five patients with breast cancer, admitted consecutively to the Breast Unit of the IRCCS Ospedale Policlinico San Martino, between May 2018 and December 2019. Sociodemographic (age of diagnosis, gender, marital and occupational status, educational level, having children) and clinical (type and side of surgery, previous breast surgery, neoadjuvant chemotherapy and axillary dissection) characteristics were investigated through a semi-structured interview. The following rating scales were administered: Beck Depression Inventory, Beck Hopelessness Scale, and Perceived Stress Scale. Our findings indicate that the presence of children and of a partner was associated with a lower total score on the clinical dimensions evaluated. Furthermore, we found demolitive surgery to be a mediator between perceived stress and hopelessness, while history of previous breast surgery was found to be a mediator between demolitive surgery and perceived stress. In conclusion, patients affected by breast cancer undergoing more complex and demolitive surgery or with history of previous breast surgery should be mostly monitored from a psychological and psychiatric point of view from the beginning of treatments to evaluate the first manifestations of psychiatric symptomatology
Potential of optimized NOvA for large theta(13) & combined performance with a LArTPC & T2K
NOvA experiment has reoptimized its event selection criteria in light of the
recently measured moderately large value of theta(13). We study the improvement
in the sensitivity to the neutrino mass hierarchy and to leptonic CP violation
due to these new features. For favourable values of deltacp, NOvA sensitivity
to mass hierarchy and leptonic CP violation is increased by 20%. Addition of 5
years of neutrino data from T2K to NOvA more than doubles the range of deltacp
for which the leptonic CP violation can be discovered, compared to stand alone
NOvA. But for unfavourable values of deltacp, the combination of NOvA and T2K
are not enough to provide even a 90% C.L. hint of hierarchy discovery.
Therefore, we further explore the improvement in the hierarchy and CP violation
sensitivities due to the addition of a 10 kt liquid argon detector placed close
to NOvA site. The capabilities of such a detector are equivalent to those of
NOvA in all respects. We find that combined data from 10 kt liquid argon
detector (3 years of nu + 3 years of nubar run), NOvA (6 years of nu + 6 years
of nubar run) and T2K (5 years of nu run) can give a close to 2 sigma hint of
hierarchy discovery for all values of deltacp. With this combined data, we can
achieve CP violation discovery at 95% C.L. for roughly 60% values of deltacp.Comment: 22 pages, 24 pdf figures, 5 tables. In the appendix, new results are

A new perturbative expansion of the time evolution operator associated with a quantum system
A novel expansion of the evolution operator associated with a -- in general,
time-dependent -- perturbed quantum Hamiltonian is presented. It is shown that
it has a wide range of possible realizations that can be fitted according to
computational convenience or to satisfy specific requirements. As a remarkable
example, the quantum Hamiltonian describing a laser-driven trapped ion is
studied in detail.Comment: 32 pages; modified version with examples of my previous paper

Search for lepton-flavour-violating decays of Higgs-like bosons.
A search is presented for a Higgs-like boson with mass in the range 45 to 195 GeV/c2 decaying into a muon and a tau lepton. The dataset consists of proton-proton interactions at a centre-of-mass energy of 8 TeV , collected by the LHCb experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 2 fb-1 . The tau leptons are reconstructed in both leptonic and hadronic decay channels. An upper limit on the production cross-section multiplied by the branching fraction at 95% confidence level is set and ranges from 22 pb for a boson mass of 45 GeV/c2 to 4 pb for a mass of 195 GeV/c2
"Your Skin Tells You" Campaign for Keratinocyte Cancers: When Individuals' Selection Makes the Difference
Background: Prevention campaigns for skin cancers have focused primarily on melanoma, and over time there has been increasing awareness of the need to select the population to be screened to maximize program effectiveness. Objectives: The objective of the study was to report the results of a free dermatological initiative, as part of an awareness campaign dedicated to keratinocyte cancers, targeting individuals pre-selected through a short questionnaire. Methods: One day of dermatological consultations was held at 15 dermato-oncology referral centers during May 22-June 30, 2021. For selection, individuals answered a telephone interview consisting of 7 yes/no questions on risk factors. Demographics, clinical characteristics of suspicious tumors, and histopathologic diagnosis of excised lesions were collected. Suspicion rate, detection rate, and positive predictive values (PPVs) for any skin cancer, basal cell carcinoma (BCC), cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC), and melanoma were calculated. Results: A total of 320 individuals (56.9% males; 43.1% females) with a median age of 69.6 (range 21-91) years qualified for the screening initiative. Overall, skin cancers and precancerous lesions were diagnosed in 65.9% of the patients. Suspicion rate was 28.7% for any skin cancer (92/320), 22.8% for BCC (73/320), 4.7% for cSCC (15/320), and 1.2% for melanoma (4/320). Detection rate was 23.4% for any skin cancer (PPV 93.7%), 18.1% for BCC (PPV 95.1%), 4.4% for cSCC (PPV 93.3%), and 0.9% for melanoma (PPV 75%). Conclusions: Selection of individuals at high risk is a cost-effective approach for early detection campaigns for keratinocyte cancers
HIDRAdisk: validation of an innovative visual tool to assess the burden of hidradenitis suppurativa
Background
Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic, relapsing, inflammatory skin disease characterized by painful inflamed nodules, recurrent abscesses and fistulas located in apocrine gland–bearing body sites. The negative impact of HS on patient's quality of life (QoL) has been reported to be greater than other dermatologic conditions as psoriasis and atopic eczema, and its improvement is an important goal in disease management. Nowadays, there are no specific validated QoL instruments available for HS and generic dermatologic questionnaires are used.
Objective
The objective of this study was to demonstrate the validity, reliability and responsiveness of HIDRAdisk, a new innovative tool designed for rapid assessment of HS burden and, at the same time, an intuitive graphic visualization of the measurement outcome.
Methods
A multicentre, longitudinal, observational study was conducted to validate the HIDRAdisk compared with other validated questionnaires [Skindex‐16, Dermatology Life Quality Index (DLQI), Work Productivity and Activity Impairment–General Health (WPAI:GH)] and to evaluate its correlation with disease severity in Italian patients with any degree of HS severity, as measured by Hurley stage and HS Physician Global Assessment (HS‐PGA).
Results
A total of 140 patients (59% women; mean age 34.9 ± 11.0 years) were enrolled in 27 dermatologic centres. HIDRAdisk showed a strong correlation with Skindex‐16 and DLQI, and a good one with WPAI:GH (correlation coefficient: 0.7568, 0.6651 and 0.5947, respectively) and a statistically significant correlation with both Hurley stage and HS‐PGA. Very good internal consistency (Cronbach coefficient >0.80; intraclass correlation coefficient >0.6), with correlation between the 10 items, good test–retest reliability (Spearman correlation coefficient, 0.8331; P < 0.0001) and responsiveness to changes were demonstrated.
Conclusion
Our study shows that HIDRAdisk, a short and innovative visual HS QoL instrument, has been psychometrically validated in Italian language and it may help improve the management of HS once implemented in routine clinical practice
