    Undergraduate views of critical thinking

    Clemson University\u27s Quality Enhanement Plan (QEP) is designed to assist undergraduates in the development of their critical thinking skills. Paul et al. (1997) found that professors indicate that they value critical thinking as important, explicit, and achieved in their students, but faculty also are vague and confusing in their open-ended descriptions of the conceptual and practical components of critical thinking instruction in the classroom. The purpose of the current study was to assess student views of the a typical professor\u27s views and student\u27s own personal views using modified versions of the survey items that Paul et al. (1997) employed. Students (n = 139) completed two eleven-item surveys; one framed a typical professor\u27s view and the other framed the student\u27s personal views of critical thinking. Students do not rate a typical professor as valuing critical thinking as important explicit and achieved in their students

    Sampling Local Fungal Diversity in an Undergraduate Laboratory using DNA Barcoding

    Traditional methods for fungal species identification require diagnostic morphological characters and are often limited by the availability of fresh fruiting bodies and local identification resources. DNA barcoding offers an additional method of species identification and is rapidly developing as a critical tool in fungal taxonomy. As an exercise in an undergraduate biology course, we identified 9 specimens collected from the Hendrix College campus in Conway, Arkansas, USA to the genus or species level using morphology. We report that DNA barcoding targeting the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region supported several of our taxonomic determinations and we were able to contribute 5 ITS sequences to GenBank that were supported by vouchered collection information. We suggest that small-scale barcoding projects are possible and that they have value for documenting fungal diversity

    Food allergy is a growing health and safety concern that affects up to 8% of school-age children. Because children spend a significant part of their day in school, and the overall number of school-age children with food allergy has been increasing, management of food allergies relies on the collaboration of allergists, families, and schools to treat and prevent acute allergic reactions. For schools, this involves policies centered on food allergen avoidance, preparedness with epinephrine autoinjectors, adequate school personnel training, and accommodations for an equal opportunity learning environment. Partnerships with allergists, primary care providers, students, families, school nurses, and school staff are vital for creating individualized and effective care plans that will allow all children, including those with food allergies, a safe and nurturing learning environment

    Quasi-classical Lie algebras and their contractions

    After classifying indecomposable quasi-classical Lie algebras in low dimension, and showing the existence of non-reductive stable quasi-classical Lie algebras, we focus on the problem of obtaining sufficient conditions for a quasi-classical Lie algebras to be the contraction of another quasi-classical algebra. It is illustrated how this allows to recover the Yang-Mills equations of a contraction by a limiting process, and how the contractions of an algebra may generate a parameterized families of Lagrangians for pairwise non-isomorphic Lie algebras.Comment: 17 pages, 2 Table

    Gangs and guilt: Towards a new theory of horror film

    The most basic and unanimous statement made in scholarship on horror films is that horror films are ‘about’ fear: the primary purpose of horror films is to scare viewers. Based on horror films from the 1970s until the present in which child gangs play a significant part, this essay advances a new theory of horror film, namely that horror films primarily seek to elicit not fear but guilt. The analysis focuses on four topics: themes, camera angles, horror’s cinematic casting of ‘abnormality,’ and the rift, unique to the horror genre, between audience ‘alignment’ and ‘allegiance.

    Social Network Evolution during Long-term Migration: A comparison of three case studies in the South Wales region

    Ten years after Poland joined the European Union (EU), a sizable number of the once considered short-term migrants that entered the United Kingdom (UK) post-2004 have remained. From the literature, it is known that when initially migrating, social networks, composed of family and friends, are used to facilitate migration. Later, migrants’ social networks may evolve to include local, non-ethnic members of the community. Through these networks, migrants may access new opportunities within the local economy. They also serve to socialise newcomers in the cultural modalities of life in the destination country. However, what if migrants’ social networks do not evolve or evolve in a limited manner? Is cultural integration still possible under these conditions? Using data collected from three case studies in the South Wales region –Cardiff, Merthyr Tydfil & Llanelli- from 2008-2012, the aim of this article is to compare Polish migrants’ social network usage, or lack thereof, over time. This comparison will be used to understand how these social networks can be catalysts and barriers for cultural integration. The findings point to the migrants’ varied use of their local social networks, which is dependent upon their language skill acquisition and their labour market mobility in the destination country

    Pickup water group ions at comet Grigg‐Skjellerup

    The density and velocity distribution of cometary water group ions was measured by the Giotto spacecraft in the regions upstream and downstream of the 'bow shock' at comet Grigg-Skjellerup. The results show that the distributions of ions are ring-like until quite close to the shock, the timescales for pitch angle and energy diffusion appear similar and the ion density follows a r-2 dependence

    When TADs go bad: chromatin structure and nuclear organisation in human disease

    Chromatin in the interphase nucleus is organised as a hierarchical series of structural domains, including self-interacting domains called topologically associating domains (TADs). This arrangement is thought to bring enhancers into closer physical proximity with their target genes, which often are located hundreds of kilobases away in linear genomic distance. TADs are demarcated by boundary regions bound by architectural proteins, such as CTCF and cohesin, although much remains to be discovered about the structure and function of these domains. Recent studies of TAD boundaries disrupted in engineered mouse models show that boundary mutations can recapitulate human developmental disorders as a result of aberrant promoter-enhancer interactions in the affected TADs. Similar boundary disruptions in certain cancers can result in oncogene overexpression, and CTCF binding sites at boundaries appear to be hyper-mutated across cancers. Further insights into chromatin organisation, in parallel with accumulating whole genome sequence data for disease cohorts, are likely to yield additional valuable insights into the roles of noncoding sequence variation in human disease
