    A Dusty Disk Around GD 362, a White Dwarf With a Uniquely High Photospheric Metal Abundance

    Eighteen years after an infrared excess was discovered associated with the white dwarf G29-38, we report ground-based measurements (JHKL'N') with mJy-level sensitivity of GD 362 that show it to be a second single white dwarf with an infrared excess. As a first approximation, the excess around GD 362, which amounts to about 3% of the total stellar luminosity, can be explained by emission from a passive, flat, opaque dust disk that lies within the Roche radius of the white dwarf. The dust may have been produced by the tidal disruption of a large parent body such as an asteroid.     Online gaming addiction: the role of sensation seeking, self-control, neuroticism, aggression, state anxiety and trait anxiety

    Research into online gaming has steadily increased over the last decade, although relatively little research has examined the relationship between online gaming addiction and personality factors. This study examined the relationship between a number of personality traits (sensation seeking, self-control, aggression, neuroticism, state anxiety, and trait anxiety) and online gaming addiction. Data were collected over a 1-month period using an opportunity sample of 123 university students at an East Midlands university in the United Kingdom. Gamers completed all the online questionnaires. Results of a multiple linear regression indicated that five traits (neuroticism, sensation seeking, trait anxiety, state anxiety, and aggression) displayed significant associations with online gaming addiction. The study suggests that certain personality traits may be important in the acquisition, development, and maintenance of online gaming addiction, although further research is needed to replicate the findings of the present study

    The Batalin-Vilkovisky method (BV) is the most powerful method to analyze functional integrals with (infinite-dimensional) gauge symmetries presently known. It has been invented to fix gauges associated with symmetries that do not close off-shell. Homological Perturbation Theory is introduced and used to develop the integration theory behind BV and to describe the BV quantization of a Lagrangian system with symmetries. Localization (illustrated in terms of Duistermaat-Heckman localization) as well as anomalous symmetries are discussed in the framework of BV.Comment: 35 page

    The chemical composition of nearby young associations: s-process element abundances in AB Doradus, Carina-Near, and Ursa Major

    Recently, several studies have shown that young, open clusters are characterised by a considerable over-abundance in their barium content. In particular, D'Orazi et al. (2009) reported that in some younger clusters [Ba/Fe] can reach values as high as ~0.6 dex. The work also identified the presence of an anti-correlation between [Ba/Fe] and cluster age. For clusters in the age range ~4.5 Gyr-500 Myr, this is best explained by assuming a higher contribution from low-mass asymptotic giant branch stars to the Galactic chemical enrichment. The purpose of this work is to investigate the ubiquity of the barium over-abundance in young stellar clusters. We analysed high-resolution spectroscopic data, focusing on the s-process elemental abundance for three nearby young associations, i.e. AB Doradus, Carina-Near, and Ursa Major. The clusters have been chosen such that their age spread would complement the D'Orazi et al. (2009) study. We find that while the s-process elements Y, Zr, La, and Ce exhibit solar ratios in all three associations, Ba is over-abundant by ~0.2 dex. Current theoretical models can not reproduce this abundance pattern, thus we investigate whether this unusually large Ba content might be related to chromospheric effects. Although no correlation between [Ba/Fe] and several activity indicators seems to be present, we conclude that different effects could be at work which may (directly or indirectly) be related to the presence of hot stellar chromospheres.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

    Theory of Systematic Computational Error in Free Energy Differences

    Systematic inaccuracy is inherent in any computational estimate of a non-linear average, due to the availability of only a finite number of data values, N. Free energy differences (DF) between two states or systems are critically important examples of such averages in physical, chemical and biological settings. Previous work has demonstrated, empirically, that the ``finite-sampling error'' can be very large -- many times kT -- in DF estimates for simple molecular systems. Here, we present a theoretical description of the inaccuracy, including the exact solution of a sample problem, the precise asymptotic behavior in terms of 1/N for large N, the identification of universal law, and numerical illustrations. The theory relies on corrections to the central and other limit theorems, and thus a role is played by stable (Levy) probability distributions.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure

    Procedural control and the proper balance between public and private interests in defamation claims

    Claims in defamation involve courts in balancing of a number of interests. The Claimant’s interest in their reputation must be balanced with the Defendant’s interest in free expression. The Court’s interest in fair, efficient and proportionate adjudication must be balanced against the Claimant’s interest in vindicating their reputation. Much of the literature examining this balance has focused on the substantive law. This article seeks to consider how these interests have been balanced through procedural control mechanisms, such as summary judgment and strike out. In particular, the development of the court’s ability to strike out a claim as an abuse of process is been considered. It is argued that the ability to strike out in such cases performs an important role, but should not be used to prevent reputational vindication where this is worthwhile. Further, it is argued that whilst substantive and procedural changes may reduce the need for strike out, the courts should not remove this important tool from their toolbox

    FK506 measurement: Comparison of different analytical methods

    In this study, we used solid-phase extraction with Sep-Pak and a liquid-liquid extraction with methylene chloride as two primary methods of extracting FK506 from plasma. The extracts were either analyzed directly by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) or subjected to high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) separation and different fractions were analyzed by ELISA. Serial blood samples were obtained from four kidney transplant patients and four patients who underwent liver transplantation, from day 1 until day 30-35 posttransplantation. There was no significant difference in the FK506 plasma concentration as measured by all four methods in normal transplant patients. However, in liver transplant patients, the solid-phase extraction method gave higher FK506 concentrations than the methylene chloride extraction during the early postoperative period. The concentrations measured after methylene chloride extraction were higher than that after HPLC-ELISA. This higher FK506 concentration measured by direct ELISA could be attributed to possible cross-reacting metabolites that were present in the plasma of patients with abnormal liver functions. Once liver function returns to normal, all four methods give identical plasma concentrations for FK506. © 1993 Raven Press, Ltd., New York

    Low Luminosity Companions to White Dwarfs

    This paper presents results of a near-infrared imaging survey for low mass stellar and substellar companions to white dwarfs. A wide field proper motion survey of 261 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companions at orbital separations between 100\sim100 and 5000 AU with masses as low as 0.05 MM_{\odot}, while a deep near field search of 86 white dwarfs was capable of directly detecting companions at separations between 50\sim50 and 1100 AU with masses as low as 0.02 MM_{\odot}. Additionally, all white dwarf targets were examined for near-infrared excess emission, a technique capable of detecting companions at arbitrarily close separations down to masses of 0.05 MM_{\odot}. No brown dwarf candidates were detected, which implies a brown dwarf companion fraction of <0.5<0.5% for white dwarfs. In contrast, the stellar companion fraction of white dwarfs as measured by this survey is 22%, uncorrected for bias. Moreover, most of the known and suspected stellar companions to white dwarfs are low mass stars whose masses are only slightly greater than the masses of brown dwarfs. Twenty previously unknown stellar companions were detected, five of which are confirmed or likely white dwarfs themselves, while fifteen are confirmed or likely low mass stars. Similar to the distribution of cool field dwarfs as a function of spectral type, the number of cool unevolved dwarf companions peaks at mid-M type. Based on the present work, relative to this peak, field L dwarfs appear to be roughly 2-3 times more abundant than companion L dwarfs.     The Complexity of Drawing Graphs on Few Lines and Few Planes

    It is well known that any graph admits a crossing-free straight-line drawing in R3\mathbb{R}^3 and that any planar graph admits the same even in R2\mathbb{R}^2. For a graph GG and d{2,3}d \in \{2,3\}, let ρd1(G)\rho^1_d(G) denote the minimum number of lines in Rd\mathbb{R}^d that together can cover all edges of a drawing of GG. For d=2d=2, GG must be planar. We investigate the complexity of computing these parameters and obtain the following hardness and algorithmic results. - For d{2,3}d\in\{2,3\}, we prove that deciding whether ρd1(G)k\rho^1_d(G)\le k for a given graph GG and integer kk is R{\exists\mathbb{R}}-complete. - Since NPR\mathrm{NP}\subseteq{\exists\mathbb{R}}, deciding ρd1(G)k\rho^1_d(G)\le k is NP-hard for d{2,3}d\in\{2,3\}. On the positive side, we show that the problem is fixed-parameter tractable with respect to kk. - Since RPSPACE{\exists\mathbb{R}}\subseteq\mathrm{PSPACE}, both ρ21(G)\rho^1_2(G) and ρ31(G)\rho^1_3(G) are computable in polynomial space. On the negative side, we show that drawings that are optimal with respect to ρ21\rho^1_2 or ρ31\rho^1_3 sometimes require irrational coordinates. - Let ρ32(G)\rho^2_3(G) be the minimum number of planes in R3\mathbb{R}^3 needed to cover a straight-line drawing of a graph GG. We prove that deciding whether ρ32(G)k\rho^2_3(G)\le k is NP-hard for any fixed k2k \ge 2. Hence, the problem is not fixed-parameter tractable with respect to kk unless P=NP\mathrm{P}=\mathrm{NP}
