A Prototype Fast Multiplicity Discriminator for ALICE L0 Trigger

    Get PDF
The design details and test results of a prototype Multiplicity Discriminator (MD) for the ALICE L0 Trigger electronics are presented. The MD design is aimed at the earliest trigger decision founded on a fast multiplicity signal cut, in both options for the ALICE centrality detector: Micro Channel Plates or Cherenkov counters. The MD accepts detector signals with an amplitude range of plus-minus 2.5 V, base duration of 1.8 ns and rise time of 300-400 ps. The digitally controlled threshold settings give an accuracy better than 0.4% at the maximum amplitude of the accepted pulses. The MD internal latency of 15 ns allows for a decision every LHC bunch crossing period, even for the 40 MHz of p-p collisions

High yield and high quality DNA from vegetative and sexual tissues of Mexican white pine (Pinus ayacahuite)

Pines are considered to be difficult for DNA extraction. However, from one species to the other there is variation in phenolic profiles and seed size that might affect final DNA yields and quality. Two DNA extraction protocols (CTAB and SDS based) were compared for their ability to produce DNA on leaves, gametophyte and embryo from Pinus ayacahuite, a pine species with a large seed (8 - 18 mm). The DNA obtained from both procedures was quantified and tested by PCR. The CTAB protocol provided higher DNA yields from vegetative tissue and embryo than the SDS method. Embryos (2n) and gametophytes (n) proved to be very good sources of DNA and the DNA isolated was suitable for PCR-RAPD and SSRmarkers. This paper reports the results and describes the modified CTAB protocol

Problems of dense and closed extension of actions of compact transformation groups are solved. The method developed in the paper is applied to problems of extension of equivariant maps and of construction of equivariant compactifications

Graft-Copolymerization of Acrylate Monomers onto Chitosan Induced by Gamma Radiation: Amphiphilic Polymers and Their Behavior at The Air-Water Interface

Graft polymerization induced by ionizing radiation is a powerful tool in materials science to modifying the physical properties of polymers. Chitosan is a biocompatible, biodegradable, antibacterial, and highly hydrophilic polysaccharide. In this work, we report the obtaining of amphiphilic polymers through graft polymerization of acrylic monomers (methyl acrylate, t-butyl acrylate, and hexyl acrylate) onto chitosan. The polymerization reaction was carried out by simultaneous irradiation of monomers and chitosan using a gamma radiation source of 60Co. The formation of Langmuir films of amphiphilic polymers was studied at the air-water interface through surface pressure versus main molecular area isotherms (Π-A) and hysteresis cycles of compression and decompression. Finally, it was analyzed the transferring of Langmuir films towards solid substrates to obtaining Langmuir-Blodgett films with potential application as an antibacterial coating. The microstructure of the Langmuir-Blodgett films was characterized by AFM microscopy observing a regular topography with roughness ranging between 0.53 and 0.6 μm

Commereial varielies of slringbeans were evalualed in Alajuela, Costa Rica from Seplember 26 th to Deeember 21 st, 1986. The evaluated parameters were: shape, pod texture and pod yield and the effect of adding fungicide on the incidence of rust (Uromyces phaseoli) and angular leaf spot (Isariopsis griseola). Two varieties, out of the 18 tested in a preliminary trial, showed straight-flat-oval shaped pods which are rejected by the local market and eight of them showed a low vegetative vigor. The eight selected varieties were planted under a Complete Randomized Block design with split-plots and five replications. The large plot was the variety and the small plot was the addition of fungicide with five replications. The highest producing varieties were Provider and Picker with 11.69 and 11.16 t/ha, respectively. There were differences in the number of pickings per variety. Extender, Provider and Resisto were picked four limes and Picker three times. The forth picking/ was of little benefit, commercial quality - wise. There was a low incidence of rust and angular leaf spot.UCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ciencias Agroalimentarias::Estación Experimental Agrícola Fabio Baudrit Moreno (EEAFBM
