Evaluation of the usefulness of various simulation technology options for TERPS enhancement

    Get PDF
Current approved terminal instrument procedures (TERPS) do not permit the full exploitation of the helicopter's unique flying characteristics. Enhanced TERPS need to be developed for a host of non-standard landing sites and navigation aids. Precision navigation systems such as microwave landing systems (MLS) and the Global Positioning System (GPS) open the possibility of curved paths, steep glide slopes, and decelerating helicopter approaches. This study evaluated the feasibility, benefits, and liabilities of using helicopter cockpit simulators in place of flight testing to develop enhanced TERPS criteria for non-standard flight profiles and navigation equipment. Near-term (2 to 5 year) requirements for conducting simulator studies to verify that they produce suitable data comparable to that obtained from previous flight tests are discussed. The long-term (5 to 10 year) research and development requirements to provide necessary modeling for continued simulator-based testing to develop enhanced TERPS criteria are also outlined

Correlated Gaussian method for dilute bosonic systems

The weakly interacting trapped Bose gases have been customarily described using the mean-field approximation in the form of the Gross-Pitaevskii equation. The mean-field approximation, however, has certain limitations, in particular it can not describe correlations between particles. We introduce here an alternative variational approach, based on the correlated Gaussian method, which in its simplest form is as fast and simple as the mean-field approximation, but which allows successive improvements of the trial wave-function by including correlations between particles.Comment: 9 pages, Workshop on Nuclei and Mesoscopic Physics, NSCL MSU, 200

Effect of resonance decays on hadron elliptic flows

    Get PDF
The influence of resonance decays on the elliptic flows of stable hadrons is studied in the quark coalescence model. Although difference between the elliptic flow of pions from resonance decays, except the rho meson, and that of directly produced pions is appreciable, those for other stable hadrons are small. Since there are more pions from the decays of rho mesons than from other resonances, including resonance decays can only account partially the deviation of final pion elliptic flow from the observed scaling of hadron elliptic flows, i.e., the hadron elliptic flow per quark is the same at same transverse momentum per quark. The remaining deviation can be explained by including the effect due to the quark momentum distribution inside hadrons.Comment: 13 pages and 5 figures, version pubblished in PRC, updated references and figure

Migration Creation, Diversion, and Retention: New Deal Grants and Migration: 1935-1940

During the 1930s the federal government embarked upon an ambitious series of grant programs designed to counteract the Great Depression. The amounts distributed varied widely across the country and potentially contributed to population shifts. We estimate an aggregate discrete choice model, in which household heads choose among 466 economic subregions. The structural model allows us to decompose the effects of program spending on migration into three categories: the effect of spending on keeping households in their origin (retention), the effect of pulling non-migrants out of their origin (creation), and the effect of causing migrants to substitute away from an alternative destination (diversion). An additional dollar of public works and relief spending increased net migration into an area primarily by retaining the existing population and creating new migration into the county. Only a small share of the increase in net migration rate was caused by diversion of people who had already chosen to migrate. AAA spending contributed to net out migration, primarily by creating new out migrants and repelling potential in migrants. A counterfactual analysis suggests that the uneven distribution of New Deal spending explains about twelve percent of the internal migration flows in the United States between 1935 and 1940.

Elliptic flow of resonances at RHIC: probing final state interactions and the structure of resonances

We propose the measurement of the elliptic flow of hadron resonances at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider as a tool to probe the amount of hadronic final state interactions for resonances at intermediate and large transverse momenta. This can be achieved by looking at systematic deviations of the measured flow coefficient v2v_2 from the scaling law given by the quark recombination formalism. Our method can be generalized to explore the structure of exotic particles, such as the recently found pentaquark Θ+(1540)\Theta^+ (1540).Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures; v2: accepted version for publication in Physical Review C rapid communication

Jadeitite from Guatemala : new observations and distinctions among multiple occurrences

    Get PDF
In Guatemala, jadeitite occurs as blocks in serpentinite mélange in distinct settings on opposite sides of the Motagua fault. Jadeitites north of the Motagua fault are associated with eclogites, blueschists, and garnet amphibolites and distributed over a 200km E-W area. Omphacitite, omphacite - taramite metabasite, albitite, and phengite rock are found with jadeitite. The assemblages indicate formation at 6-12kbar and 300-400°C, however jadeite - omphacite pairs yield T from ~200 to >500ºC for jadeite crystallization. Jadeitites south of the Motagua fault are sourced from three separate fault slices of serpentinite in Jalapa and Zacapa departments and are distinctive: 1) Jadeitite near Carrizal Grande is found in serpentinite with lawsonite eclogites, variably altered to blueschist, and rarely in schists. A large jadeite - omphacite gap and lawsonite suggests T=300-400°C, but at high P as indicated by the presence of quartz: P>12-20kbar. Lawsonite eclogites (P=20-25kbar, T=350-450°C) occur with these jadeitites. 2) At La Ceiba, jadeitites coexist with omphacite blueschists and contain late-stage veins of quartz, diopside, cymrite, actinolite, titanite and vesuvianite. A large jadeite - omphacite gap suggests 300-400°C, but at lower P as indicated by quartz + albite: P=10-14kbar. 3) At La Ensenada jade i tites occur with lawsonite-glaucophane blueschists and chloritite. It is a fine-grained jadeite-pumpellyite rock, intensely deformed and veined with grossular, omphacite, albite and titanite, but no quartz. A large jadeite-omphacite gap and pumpellyite suggest ~200-~300°C at lower P consistent with primary albite: P=6-9kbar. The silicates contain little iron

Strategy Sort of Died Around April of Last Year for a lot of Us

The role of the Chief Information Officer (CIO) is one of facilitating executive decisions regarding the innovation, provision and use of state-of-the-art Information and Communication Technologies (ICT). The aim of this paper is to investigate CIO perceptions of strategy and ICT investment through qualitative interviews with CIOs from leading UK financial sector organisations. We were keen to find out how these executives strategise while coping with the increasing ubiquity and complexity of ICT on one hand and hyper business pressures on the other. As the title suggests, we found that recent changes in the market conditions, as well as in the trust bestowed technology as an agent for radical change, have had serious consequences for the perceptions of risk, strategy and ICT investment. CIOs expressed the dot-com boom to bust transition in terms of a shift from a higher-risk, top-down technology led strategy centred on killer applications towards a lower-risk, bottom-up, organic approach to strategy with the purpose of providing open, user driven enabling infrastructures for competitive advantage. We also note the implications of these trends for the value assessment activity and the enhanced value skill base which information age professionals would increasingly need
