    The effect of salinity on some endocommensalic ciliates from shipworms

    The ciliates, Nucleocorbula adherens, Boveria teredinidi, Trichodina balakrishnia, Thingmozoon fencheli and Nyctothereus marina, live inside the mantle cavity of the shipworms in the estuaries and backwaters of the south-west coast of India. Seasonal incidence and relative abundance of these ciliates showed that they were more abundant during the low saline than the high saline periods. Even though these ciliates can endure higher salinities through gradual acclimatization of their habitat it was found that they prefer low salinity for active growth and healthy existence

    Zooplankton standing stock and community structure along Karnataka Coast, west coast of India

    Distribution of zooplankton along two transects at Karwar and Ratnagiri, west coast of India, was studied. The standing stock of zooplankton was relatively high in the neritic zone with the highest value [358 ml/100 m super(3)] in the area off Ratnagiri due to the aggregation of fish larvae and hydromedusae. Maximum zooplankton production in these areas was noticed with the low temperature and low dissolved oxygen during postmonsoon season. At Karwar the highest biomass [188 ml/100 m super(3)] was observed from the nearshore station due to swarms of the cladoceran Penilia avirostris and the pteropod Cresis acicula when the salinity was low. The fluctuations in numerical abundance and percentage composition of all the major planktonic groups are discussed. The fishery of these areas is compared with the zooplankton standing stock

    Alignment and preliminary outcomes of an ELT-size instrument to a very large telescope: LINC-NIRVANA at LBT

    LINC-NIRVANA (LN) is a high resolution, near infrared imager that uses a multiple field-of-view, layer-oriented, multi-conjugate AO system, consisting of four multi-pyramid wavefront sensors (two for each arm of the Large Binocular Telescope, each conjugated to a different altitude). The system employs up to 40 star probes, looking at up to 20 natural guide stars simultaneously. Its final goal is to perform Fizeau interferometric imaging, thereby achieving ELT-like spatial resolution (22.8 m baseline resolution). For this reason, LN is also equipped with a fringe tracker, a beam combiner and a NIR science camera, for a total of more than 250 optical components and an overall size of approximately 6x4x4.5 meters. This paper describes the tradeoffs evaluated in order to achieve the alignment of the system to the telescope. We note that LN is comparable in size to planned ELT instrumentation. The impact of such alignment strategies will be compared and the selected procedure, where the LBT telescope is, in fact, aligned to the instrument, will be described.     NEPHROPROTECTIVE EFFECT OF LYCOPENE IN HYPERGLYCEMIA INDUCED OXIDATIVE STRESS IN MALE WISTAR RATS

    Objective: Diabetes mellitus is the chronic metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia associated with absolute or relative deficiency in insulin secretion or insulin action. The most commonly accepted cause of diabetes is the oxidative damage that is caused by free radicals generation. Free radicals have high ability to attract electrons from macromolecules such as carbohydrates, protein, lipid and DNA. Excessive Reactive oxygen species (ROS) can cause structural deterioration and instability of the macromolecules, consequently affecting proper cellular signaling pathways, gene regulation and function. The present study was conducted to investigate the nephroprotective effect of lycopene in alloxan induced type I diabetes. Methods: Male wistar rats were divided in to 5 groups 6 in each. Group1 as control, Group II. III,IV and V were diabetic groups. Group II diabetic control, Group III treated with protamine zinc insulin 0.9 u/100 gm s. c. Group IV and V treated with 2.5 mg/kg and 5 mg/kg of lycopene. After 3 weeks blood samples were collected from all the groups of animals to measure Lipid peroxidation. Serum glucose, urea and creatinine. Results: The serum Glucose, urea and creatinine were significantly increased in untreated diabetic rats. In addition, there was significant rise in lipid peroxidation. Conclusion: In this study, oxidative damage with diabetes was ameliorated with administration of lycopene. The results of this study indicate that lycopene is an effective nutritional component to alleviate or prevent the complications

    Ingot-like class of wavefront sensors for laser guide stars

    Context. Full sky coverage adaptive optics (AO) on extremely large telescopes requires the adoption of several laser guide stars as references. With such large apertures, the apparent elongation of the beacons is absolutely significant. With a few exceptions, wavefront sensors (WFSs) designed for natural guide stars can be adapted and used in suboptimal mode in this context. Aims. We analyse and describe the geometrical properties of a class of WFSs that are specifically designed to deal with laser guide stars propagated from a location in the immediate vicinity of the telescope aperture. Methods. We describe, in three dimensions, the loci where the light of the laser guide stars would focus in the focal volume located behind the focal plane where astronomical objects are reimaged. We also describe the properties of several types of optomechanical devices that act as perturbers for this new class of pupil plane sensors, through refraction and reflections. We refer to these as ingot WFSs. Results. We provide the recipes both for the most reasonably complex version of these WFSs, with six pupils and, for the simplest one, only three pupils. Both of them are referred to on the basis of the European Extremely Large Telescope (ELT) case. We outlined elements that are meant to give a qualitative idea of how the sensitivity of this new class of sensors compares to conventional ones. Conclusions. We present a new class of WFSs, based on an extension to the case of elongated sources at a finite distance of the pyramid WFS. We point out which advantages of the pyramid can be retained and how it may be adopted to optimize the sensing procedure

    Population differentiation of Southern Indian male lineages correlates with agricultural expansions predating the caste system

Der Sarkissian and Wolfgang Haak are contributors to the Genographic ConsortiumPrevious studies that pooled Indian populations from a wide variety of geographical locations, have obtained contradictory conclusions about the processes of the establishment of the Varna caste system and its genetic impact on the origins and demographic histories of Indian populations. To further investigate these questions we took advantage that both Y chromosome and caste designation are paternally inherited, and genotyped 1,680 Y chromosomes representing 12 tribal and 19 non-tribal (caste) endogamous populations from the predominantly Dravidian-speaking Tamil Nadu state in the southernmost part of India. Tribes and castes were both characterized by an overwhelming proportion of putatively Indian autochthonous Y-chromosomal haplogroups (H-M69, F-M89, R1a1-M17, L1-M27, R2-M124, and C5-M356; 81% combined) with a shared genetic heritage dating back to the late Pleistocene (10–30 Kya), suggesting that more recent Holocene migrations from western Eurasia contributed, <20% of the male lineages. We found strong evidence for genetic structure, associated primarily with the current mode of subsistence. Coalescence analysis suggested that the social stratification was established 4–6 Kya and there was little admixture during the last 3 Kya, implying a minimal genetic impact of the Varna(caste) system from the historically-documented Brahmin migrations into the area. In contrast, the overall Y-chromosomal patterns, the time depth of population diversifications and the period of differentiation were best explained by the emergence of agricultural technology in South Asia. These results highlight the utility of detailed local genetic studies within India, without prior assumptions about the importance of Varna rank status for population grouping, to obtain new insights into the relative influences of past demographic events for the population structure of the whole of modern India.GaneshPrasad ArunKumar, David F.     Analysis of biogeographic ancestry reveals complex genetic histories for indigenous communities of St. Vincent and Trinidad

    Objectives From a genetic perspective, relatively little is known about how mass emigrations of African, European, and Asian peoples beginning in the 16th century affected Indigenous Caribbean populations. Therefore, we explored the impact of serial colonization on the genetic variation of the first Caribbean islanders. Materials and methods Sixty-four members of St. Vincent's Garifuna Community and 36 members of Trinidad's Santa Rosa First People's Community (FPC) of Arima were characterized for mitochondrial DNA and Y-chromosome diversity via direct sequencing and targeted SNP and STR genotyping. A subset of 32 Garifuna and 18 FPC participants were genotyped using the GenoChip 2.0 microarray. The resulting data were used to examine genetic diversity, admixture, and sex biased gene flow in the study communities. Results The Garifuna were most genetically comparable to African descendant populations, whereas the FPC were more similar to admixed American groups. Both communities also exhibited moderate frequencies of Indigenous American matrilines and patrilines. Autosomal SNP analysis indicated modest Indigenous American ancestry in these populations, while both showed varying degrees of African, European, South Asian, and East Asian ancestry, with patterns of sex-biased gene flow differing between the island communities. Discussion These patterns of genetic variation are consistent with historical records of migration, forced, or voluntary, and suggest that different migration events shaped the genetic make-up of each island community. This genomic study is the highest resolution analysis yet conducted with these communities, and provides a fuller understanding of the complex bio-histories of Indigenous Caribbean peoples in the Lesser Antilles

    Species Composition, Distribution and Abundance of Hydromedusae in the Exclusive Economic Zone of the East Coast of India

    Ocean Research Vessel Sagar Sampada Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute, India, during the period 1986-1990, 356 samples from 18 cruises from Sri Lanka to Calcutta coast were analysed. The hydromedusae were encountered in 273 samples and more than 62 species were found. Liriope tetraphylla dominated in the percentage of occurrence and population density. Aglaura hemistoma, Solmundella bitentaculata, Rhopalonema velatum, Cytaeis tetrastyla, Bougainvillia fulva and Phialidium hemisphaericum were the commonly occurring species. The maximum species diversity was noticed away from the nearshore stations, while maximum population density was from nearshore stations

    Evanescent bivalve-inhabiting hydroids in India

    In May of 1995 and January of 1997, at least 10 bivalve species in nine genera were surveyed for bivalve-inhabiting hydrozoans at Cochin, southwestern India. In particular, Eutima commensalis Santhakumari, 1970, for which this is the type locality, and E. japonica Uchida, 1925, a related species from Japan, were sought, since both commensals have mature medusae of like morphology. Unfortunately no hydroids were detected m any bivalve, including Perna viridis (Linnaeus, 1758) (352 specimens examined), Nausitora hedleyi Schepman (107), Martesia striata (Linnaeus, 1758) (147), Crassostrea spp. (332), Hormomya mutabilis (Gould, 1861) (15), Xenostrobus atratus (Lischke, 1871) (45), Musculista senhausia Benson, 1842 (117), Modiolus auriculatus (Krauss, 1848) (39), and Irus (Irus) mittis (Deshayes, 1854) (6). Directions for systematic research in the future are pointed out, with emphasis on clarifying the life cycles of this group of hydroids in India. Some general topics and miscellaneous observations made during the present research are also raised and discussed
