    Multi-Objective and Financial Portfolio Optimization of Carrier-Sense Multiple Access Protocols with Cooperative Diversity

    8th International Workshop on Multiple Access Communications (MACOM2015), Helsinki, Finland.This paper presents a trade-off design and optimization of a class of wireless carrier-sense multiple access protocols where collision-free transmissions are assisted by the potential cooperative retransmissions of inactive terminals with a correct copy of the original transmission. Terminals are enabled with a decode-and-forward relaying protocol. The analysis is focused on asymmetrical settings, where terminals experience different channel and queuing statistics. This work is based on multi-objective and financial portfolio optimization tools. Each packet transmission is thus regarded not only as a network resource, but also as a financial asset with different values of return and risk (or variance of the return). The objective of this financial optimization is to find the transmission policy that simultaneously maximizes return and minimizes risk in the network. The work is focused on the characterization of the boundaries (envelope) of different types of trade-off performance regions: the conventional throughput region, sum-throughput vs. fairness, sum-throughput vs. power, and return vs. risk regions. Fairness is evaluated by means of the Gini-index, which is a metric commonly used in economics to measure income inequality. Transmit power is directly linked to the global transmission rate. The protocol is shown to outperform non-cooperative solutions under different network conditions that are here discussed

    Conductivity study of Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks, Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide doped with Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks, and mixed matrix membranes of Polyetherimide/Tetrabutylammonium hydroxide doped with Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks for proton conducting applications

    [EN] ZIF-8 (Z8), ZIF-67 (Z67), and ZMix, a Zn/Co bimetallic zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF), were synthesized and doped with tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (ZIFsT). The obtained powders were used as fillers for polyetherimide (PEI) at a concentration of 20 wt %. The presence of the three ZIFsT in the polymeric matrix enhanced proton transport relative to that observed for PEI or ZIFs alone. The real and imaginary parts of the complex conductivity were obtained for each of the six materials, and the temperature and frequency dependence of the real part was analyzed. The results at different temperatures show that the dc-conductivity are about three orders of magnitude higher for the doped ZIFsT materials than for the PEI/ZIFsT membranes. In addition, the conductivity of the PEI/ZIFsT membranes increases five or six times when the temperature is changed from 25 °C to 55 °C. For these materials, the conductivity measurements have a linear dependency with frequency, which allowed for the creation of a master curve. It was also found that the PEI/ZMixT membrane activation energy is four times smaller than that of PEI/Z8T membranes and five times smaller than that of PEI/Z67T. Similarly, the real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric constant were obtained, and the tan ¿ was evaluated. Using this value, the diffusion coefficient and the charge carrier density were obtained.     Synthesis of Nitrogenated Heterocycles by Asymmetric Transfer Hydrogenation of N-(tert-Butylsulfinyl)haloimines

    Highly optically enriched, protected, nitrogenated heterocycles with different ring sizes have been synthesized by a very efficient methodology consisting of the asymmetric transfer hydrogenation of N-(tert-butylsulfinyl)haloimines followed by treatment with a base to promote an intramolecular nucleophilic substitution process. N-Protected aziridines, pyrrolidines, piperidines, and azepanes bearing aromatic, heteroaromatic, and aliphatic substituents have been obtained in very high yields and diastereomeric ratios up to >99:1. The free heterocycles can be easily obtained by a simple and mild desulfinylation procedure. Both enantiomers of the free heterocycles can be prepared with the same good results by changing the absolute configuration of the sulfur atom of the sulfinyl group.This work was generously supported by the Spanish Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN; grant no.     The Habituation/Cross-Habituation Test Revisited: Guidance from Sniffing and Video Tracking

    The habituation/cross-habituation test (HaXha) is a spontaneous odor discrimination task that has been used for many decades to evaluate olfactory function in animals. Animals are presented repeatedly with the same odorant after which a new odorant is introduced. The time the animal explores the odor object is measured. An animal is considered to cross-habituate during the novel stimulus trial when the exploration time is higher than the prior trial and indicates the degree of olfactory patency. On the other hand, habituation across the repeated trials involves decreased exploration time and is related to memory patency, especially at long intervals. Classically exploration is timed using a stopwatch when the animal is within 2 cm of the object and aimed toward it. These criteria are intuitive, but it is unclear how they relate to olfactory exploration, that is, sniffing. We used video tracking combined with plethysmography to improve accuracy, avoid observer bias, and propose more robust criteria for exploratory scoring when sniff measures are not available. We also demonstrate that sniff rate combined with proximity is the most direct measure of odorant exploration and provide a robust and sensitive criterion
