WHICH ARE THE EFFECTS OF BODY-OBJECTIFICATION AND INSTAGRAM-RELATED PRACTICES ON MALE BODY ESTEEM? A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY
Objective: According to the objectification framework, media pressure toward
body models promotes the internalization of beauty ideals that negatively influence
individuals’ body image and self-esteem. Historically, women have been the main
target of sociocultural pressures. However, research has recently suggested that
self-objectification is a male phenomenon as well, which can be inscribed in men’s
body experiences. Nevertheless, fewer studies have specifically focused on the male
experience and general consequences of body-objectification are yet to be extensively
analyzed regarding males’ body image features. The current cross-sectional study
explores the consequences of body-objectification on male body esteem, specifically
testing the predictive role of exercising/dietary habits, body-objectification features,
and SNS-related practices on male body esteem.
Method: A total of 238 male participants (mean age = 24.28 years, SD = 4.32)
have been involved in an online survey. Three hierarchical analyses were performed
to test the influence of objectified body consciousness and social networking-related
experiences (i.e. Instagram intensity use, photo manipulation, selfie feedback
investment) on young men’s body esteem with specific reference to the weight,
appearance, and attribution features of the Body Esteem Scale.
Results: Findings highlighted that body shame played an interesting key role,
influencing negatively all the body esteem dimensions, thus highlighting that
attention needs to be deserved on this feature of OBC regarding males’ experience.
On the contrary, appearance control-related dimensions positively influenced body
esteem. Overall, findings confirmed that objectification theory can adequately mark
a pathway by which media imagery is internalized also by men and may negatively
affect their body esteem.
Conclusions: Despite some limitations, this study may contribute to enlarging
our knowledge on male body image and self-objectification experience and support
literature shattering the stereotype that body dissatisfaction is a “female-exclusive”
issue. Likewise, beyond some questioning positions, these findings also encourage
further exploration of a healthier “control dimension”, including body appearance related activities and beliefs
Problematic internet use and emotional dysregulation among young people: A literature review
Objective: In recent years scientific interest in Internet use disorders, especially among young people, has grown dramatically. Within this contemporary research field, difficulties in regulating emotions have been increasingly explored in association with problematic Internet use (PIU). Indeed, individuals who experience difficulties in emotion regulation might be more exposed to the risk of developing PIU. Therefore, the present study aimed to review the literature from the last ten years focused on the relationship between young people’s emotional dysregulation and PIU, taking into account the main variables involved in this relationship and possible gender-related differences. Method: This review included studies published between 2010 and 2020 that were indexed in major databases with the following keywords: emotion regulation, problematic Internet use, Internet addiction, social network addiction, and social media addiction. In the selection process of the studies, close attention was paid for the mean age of the involved samples that had to range between 13 and 25 years. Results: A total of 23 studies satisfied the initial inclusion criteria and were included in the present literature review. Several reviewed studies found a strong association between emotion dysregulation and both PIU and problematic social networking with controversial gender-based findings. Furthermore, the relationships among emotional dysregulation, PIU, attachment styles, and metacognitions were largely explored. Conclusions: Overall, the present review showed that problematic Internet use might represent a coping strategy to compensate for emotional regulation deficits. The lack of social support and the lack of a good parent-adolescent relationship seem to negatively affect emotional regulation abilities, which in turn increase the risk of developing PIU. Moreover, good metacognitive abilities might represent a protective factor towards emotional dysregulation and PIU. Finally, males with emotional dysregulation are likely to be more problematically engaged in Internet use than females. These results might have important practical implications to implement health prevention/promotion programs, emotion regulation-based training programmes and therapies
An X-ray review of MS1054-0321: hot or not?
XMM-Newton observations are presented for the z=0.83 cluster of galaxies
MS1054-0321, the highest redshift cluster in the Einstein Extended Medium
Sensitivity Survey (EMSS). The temperature inferred by the XMM-Newton data,
T=7.2 (+0.7, -0.6) keV, is much lower than the temperature previously reported
from ASCA data, T=12.3 (+3.1, -2.2) keV (Donahue et al. 1998), and a little
lower than the Chandra temperature, T=10.4(+1.7, -1.5) keV, determined by
Jeltema et al. 2001. The discrepancy between the newly derived temperature and
the previously derived temperatures is discussed in detail. If one allows the
column density to be a free parameter, then the best fit temperature becomes
T=8.6 (+1.2, -1.1) keV, and the best fit column density becomes N_(H)=1.33
(+0.15 -0.14) x 10^20 atoms/cm^2. The iron line is well detected in the
XMM-Newton spectrum with a value for the abundance of Z=0.33 (+0.19 -0.18)
Zsol, in very good agreement with previous determinations. The derived XMM
X-ray luminosity for the overall cluster in the 2-10 keV energy band is
L_X=(3.81 +/- 0.19) x 10^44 h^-2 erg s^-1 while the bolometric luminosity is
L_BOL=(8.05+/-0.40) x 10^44 h^-2 erg s^-1. The XMM-Newton data confirm the
substructure in the cluster X-ray morphology already seen by ROSAT and in much
more detail by Chandra. The central weak lensing clump is coincident with the
main cluster component and has a temperature T=8.1 (+1.3, -1.2) keV. The
western weak lensing clump coincides with the western X-ray component which is
much cooler with a temperature T=5.6 (+0.8, -0.6)$ keV. Given the newly
determined temperature, MS1054-0321 is no longer amongst the hottest clusters

Selfie-engagement on social media: pathological narcissism, positive expectation, and body objectification – which is more influential?
The current use of social media platforms by active young users/creators of visual content provides an easy medium to achieve narcissistic goals of self-promotion and attention-seeking, and to socialize with self-objectification experiences. One of the most popular activities associated with social media use is selfie-sharing. Consequently, the global focus on online physical appearance approval could reinforce selfie-engagement as a specific body image-related behavior, potentially associated with selfie-marketing strategies for self-improvement, and problematic social media use. The present study evaluated the main direct effect of pathological narcissism, objectified body consciousness, and expectations toward selfies on young women’s and men’s selfie-engagement. A total of 570 young adults (66.8% females; mean age = 24.4 years, SD = 3.6) participated in an online survey study. Variables were assessed using the Pathological Narcissism Inventory (Fossati, Feeney, Pincus, Borroni, & Maffei, 2015), Objectified Body Consciousness Scale (Dakanalis et al., 2015), Selfie-expectancies Scale (Boursier & Manna, 2018), and a measure of selfie-engagement. Hierarchical regression analyses were performed on independent male and female subsamples. Results showed that body surveillance and positive selfie-expectancies are consistent selfie-behavior predictors, among both men (R2 = 0.227; p < .001) and women (R2 = 0.332; p < .001). Furthermore, findings confirm women’s involvement in appearance concerns and body-image related practices, even though men’s engagement in body-objectification deserve attention. The study provides novel findings in the field of self-objectification research as well as contributing to the ongoing debate concerning which psychological factors can be predictive of males' and females' selfie-engagement. The implications of these findings are also discussed in light of the debate on social media use and misuse

Objectified body consciousness, body image control in photos, and problematic social networking: the role of appearance control beliefs
At present, adolescents' photo-taking and photo-sharing on social media represent ubiquitous practices and objectified body consciousness (OBC) might offer a useful framework to explore online self-presentation and social networking site (SNS) use. Indeed, SNS might represent a highly accessible medium for socializing with self-objectification. However, the relationship between OBC components and problematic SNS use is still understudied. The present study evaluated the previously unexplored predictive role of appearance control beliefs on problematic SNS use, testing the mediating effect of body image control in photos (BICP) across male and female groups. A total of 693 adolescents (55% females; mean age 16 years) participated in the study. Results showed the negatively predictive role of appearance control beliefs on control over body image in photos. Moreover, BICP mediated the appearance control beliefs' negative effect on problematic SNS use in girls. The present study tested the unexplored effect of appearance control beliefs upon problematic SNS use, contributing to the OBC research field and the ongoing debate concerning predictive and protective factors in problematic SNS use
A Hard Medium Survey with ASCA. IV: the Radio-Loud Type 2 QSO AXJ0843+294 2
We discuss the X-ray, optical and radio properties of AX J0843+2942, a high
luminosity Type 2 AGN found in the ASCA Hard Serendipitous Survey. The X-ray
spectrum is best described by an absorbed power-law model with photon index of
Gamma = 1.72 (+0.3 -0.6) and intrinsic absorbing column density of NH = 1.44
(+0.33 -0.52) x 10E23 cm-2. The intrinsic luminosity in the 0.5-10 keV energy
band is ~ 3x10E45 erg s-1, well within the range of quasar luminosities. AX
J0843+2942, positionally coincident with the core of a triple and strong (S_1.4
GHz ~ 1 Jy; P_1.4 GHz ~ 9 x 10E33 erg s-1 Hz-1) radio source, is
spectroscopically identified with a Narrow Line object (intrinsic FWHM of all
the permitted emission lines <= 1200 km s-1) at z=0.398, having line features
and ratios typical of Seyfert-2 like objects. The high X-ray luminosity,
coupled with the high intrinsic absorption, the optical spectral properties and
the radio power, allow us to propose AX J0843+2942 as a Radio-Loud "Type 2
QSO". A discussion of the SED of this object is presented here together with a
comparison with the SED of Ultra Luminous Infrared Galaxies, other "Type 2 QSO"
candidates from the literature, and "normal" Radio-Quiet and Radio-Loud QSOs.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, Latex manuscript, Accepted for publication in

Evidence on Problematic Online Gaming and Social Anxiety over the Past Ten Years: a Systematic Literature Review
Purpose of Review: The present study aimed to review the literature concerning the relationship between problematic online gaming (POG) and social anxiety, taking into account the variables implicated in this relationship. This review included studies published between 2010 and 2020 that were indexed in major databases with the following keywords: Internet gaming, disorder, addiction, problematic, social phobia, and social anxiety. Recent Findings: In recent years, scientific interest in POG has grown dramatically. Within this prolific research field, difficulties associated with social anxiety have been increasingly explored in relation to POG. Indeed, evidence showed that individuals who experience social anxiety are more exposed to the risk of developing an excessive or addictive gaming behavior. Summary: A total of 30 studies satisfied the initial inclusion criteria and were included in the present literature review. Several reviewed studies found a strong association between social anxiety and online gaming disorder. Furthermore, the relationships among social anxiety, POG, age, and psychosocial and comorbid factors were largely explored. Overall, the present review showed that socially anxious individuals might perceive online video games as safer social environments than face-to-face interactions, predisposing individuals to the POG. However, in a mutually reinforcing relationship, individuals with higher POG seem to show higher social anxiety. Therefore, despite online gaming might represent an activity able to alleviate psychopathological symptoms and/or negative emotional states, people might use online gaming to counterbalance distress or negative situations in everyday life, carrying out a maladaptive coping strategy
Flood quantiles estimation based on theoretically derived distributions: regional analysis in Southern Italy
A regional probabilistic model for the estimation of medium-high return period flood quantiles is presented. The model is based on the use of theoretically derived probability distributions of annual maximum flood peaks (DDF). The general model is called TCIF (Two-Component IF model) and encompasses two different threshold mechanisms associated with ordinary and extraordinary events, respectively. Based on at-site calibration of this model for 33 gauged sites in Southern Italy, a regional analysis is performed obtaining satisfactory results for the estimation of flood quantiles for return periods of technical interest, thus suggesting the use of the proposed methodology for the application to ungauged basins. The model is validated by using a jack-knife cross-validation technique taking all river basins into consideration
Effects of runoff thresholds on flood frequency distributions
International audienceRunoff generation during extreme floods usually occurs whenever rainfall forcing exceeds a given threshold. In many cases, different thresholds may be identified as responsible of the hydrological losses during ordinary events or extraordinary events at the basin scale. Such thresholds are shown to be related to the dynamics of soil saturation of the river basin and to account for the high skewness of their annual flood distributions. In basins where ordinary floods are mostly due to a small portion of the surface which is particularly prone to produce runoff, depending on permeability of a river basin and its antecedent soil moisture conditions, severe rainfall may exceed a basin-wide soil storage threshold and produce the so-called outlier events responsible of the high skewness of floods distributions. In this context, the derived theoretical model based on the concept of variable contributing area to peak flow proposed by Iacobellis and Fiorentino (2000) was generalized with the aim of incorporating such kind of dynamics in the description of the phenomena. The work produced a new formulation of the derived distribution where the two runoff components are explicitly considered. The present work was validated by using as test site a group of basins belonging to Southern Italy and characterized by flood distributions with high skewness. The application of the proposed model provided a good fitting to the observed distributions. Moreover, model parameters were found to be strongly related to physiographic basin characteristics giving consistency to the modelling assumptions
Analysis on flood generation processes by means of a continuous simulation model
International audienceIn the present research, we exploited a continuous hydrological simulation to investigate on key variables responsible of flood peak formation. With this purpose, a distributed hydrological model (DREAM) is used in cascade with a rainfall generator (IRP-Iterated Random Pulse) to simulate a large number of extreme events providing insight into the main controls of flood generation mechanisms. Investigated variables are those used in theoretically derived probability distribution of floods based on the concept of partial contributing area (e.g. Iacobellis and Fiorentino, 2000). The continuous simulation model is used to investigate on the hydrological losses occurring during extreme events, the variability of the source area contributing to the flood peak and its lag-time. Results suggest interesting simplification for the theoretical probability distribution of floods according to the different climatic and geomorfologic environments. The study is applied to two basins located in Southern Italy with different climatic characteristics
