    Properties of HxTaS2

    The preparation of Hx TaS2 (0 \u3c x \u3c 0.87) is described. The compounds are only marginally stable at room temperature, slowly evolving H2S and H2 (and possibly Hp in air). Magnetic susceptibility data show that a low temperature transformation in 2H ... TaS2 (at so•K) is suppressed with the addition of hydrogen, and· at the same time the superconducting transition temperature T c rises from 0.8 to ~4.2•K at x = 0.11. Heat capacity measurements near this concentration show the superconductivity to be a bulk effect. Finally, by correlation of this data with susceptibility and T c measurements in other intercalation compounds, we suggest that the rise of T c (at low electron transfer) is due to suppression of the low temperature transformation and not due to an excitonic mechanism of superconductivity

    Diffusion and Transport Coefficients in Synthetic Opals

    Opals are structures composed of the closed packing of spheres in the size range of nano-to-micro meter. They are sintered to create small necks at the points of contact. We have solved the diffusion problem in such structures. The relation between the diffusion coefficient and the termal and electrical conductivity makes possible to estimate the transport coefficients of opal structures. We estimate this changes as function of the neck size and the mean-free path of the carriers. The theory presented is also applicable to the diffusion problem in other periodic structures.Comment: Submitted to PR

    Design, Participation, and Social Change: What Design in Grassroots Spaces Can Teach Learning Scientists

    hile a science of design (and theory of learning) is certainly useful in design-based research, a participatory design research framework presents an opening for learning scientists to rethink design and learning as processes. Grounded in the autoethnographic investigation of a grassroots organization\u27s design of a local campaign, the author traces the successive transformations of design artifacts, delineating a narrative character to design within grassroots spaces. One major lesson is that centering the question of participation is not just about including historically marginalized peoples at the core of design; it has the potential to “desettle” projects at a fundamental level, challenging dominant epistemologies that inform the practices of learning scientists, and thus transforming the field in ways that have yet to be systematically explored. More broadly, this study highlights the need for future research on design practices as they take form within understudied spaces, such as grassroots organizations

    Half-metallic antiferromagnets in thiospinels

    We have theoretically designed the half-metallic (HM) antiferromagnets (AFMs) in thiospinel systems, Mn(CrV)S4\rm Mn(CrV)S_{4} and Fe0.5Cu0.5(V0.5Ti1.5)S4\rm Fe_{0.5}Cu_{0.5}(V_{0.5}Ti_{1.5})S_{4}, based on the electronic structure studies in the local-spin-density approximation (LSDA). We have also explored electronic and magnetic properties of parent spinel compounds of the above systems; CuV2S4\rm CuV_{2}S_{4} and CuTi2S4\rm CuTi_{2}S_{4} are found to be HM ferromagnets in their cubic spinel structures, while MnCr2S4\rm MnCr_{2}S_{4} is a ferrimagnetic insulator.     El plomo es un metal neurotóxico ampliamente distribuido en el ambiente. Uno de los mecanismos de acción propuesto es su capacidad de inducir estrés oxidativo. Estudios experimentales en animales y observacionales en adultos expuestos ocupacionalmente han establecido una relación entre la exposición al plomo y alteraciones en biomarcadores de estrés oxidativo. Sin embargo la evidencia no es concluyente en poblaciones pediátricas expuestas ambientalmente al plomo.     Reduction in Physical Match Performance at the Start of the Second Half in Elite Soccer

    Purpose: Soccer referees' physical match performances at the start of the second half (46-60 min) were evaluated in relation to both the corresponding phase of the first half (0-15 min) and players' performances during the same match periods. Methods: Match analysis data were collected (Prozone, UK) from 12 soccer referees on 152 English Premier League matches during the 2008/09 soccer season. Physical match performance categories for referees and players were total distance, high-speed running distance (speed >5.5 m/s), and sprinting distance (>7.0 m/s). The referees' heart rate was recorded from the start of their warm-up to the end of the match. The referees' average distances (in meters) from the ball and fouls were also calculated. Results: No substantial differences were observed in duration (16:42 ± 2:35 vs 16:27 ± 1:00 min) or intensity (107 ± 11 vs 106 ± 14 beats/ min) of the referees' preparation periods immediately before each half. Physical match performance was reduced during the initial phase of the second half when compared with the first half in both referees (effect sizes-standardized mean differences-0.19 to 0.73) and players (effect sizes 0.20 to 1.01). The degree of the decreased performance was consistent between referees and players for total distance (4.7 m), high-speed running (1.5 m), and sprinting (1.1 m). The referees were closer to the ball (effect size 0.52) during the opening phase the second half. Conclusion: Given the similarity in the referees' preparation periods, it may be that the reduced physical match performances observed in soccer referees during the opening stages of the second half are a consequence of a slower tempo of play

    HCI policy and the smart city

    While the idea of the ‘Smart City’ has attracted increasing attention from academia, industry, and government this interest has largely had a technical and technological focus. This paper identifies some of the important political and policy challenges facing the idea, the discourse, of a ‘smart city’ as a means to optimise HCI input into the ‘smart city’ debate. It then addresses that gap by detailing a research project that explored how experts in smart city research and development in the UK context responded to this policy challenge. Experts were asked questions regarding their prior experience with the “smart city”, their understandings of what it means for a city to be smart, and what policy potentials they've recognised in the smart city. The paper analyses and offers a synthesis of the responses collected throughout the research with the current policies concerning various smart city proximity, thereby providing a critical assessment of the values underlying the smart city. The paper aims to explore and present some of the policy possibilities for UK smart cities that are potentially useful for politicians, policy makers, planners, academics, and technology companies. I believe that these perspectives for policy development can be used to inform responsible development, spatially and socially inclusive technologies, and ultimately more resilient and liveable cities

    Q^2 Evolution of the Neutron Spin Structure Moments using a He-3 Target

    We have measured the spin structure functions g1g_1 and g2g_2 of 3^3He in a double-spin experiment by inclusively scattering polarized electrons at energies ranging from 0.862 to 5.07 GeV off a polarized 3^3He target at a 15.5^{\circ} scattering angle. Excitation energies covered the resonance and the onset of the deep inelastic regions. We have determined for the first time the Q2Q^2 evolution of Γ1(Q2)=01g1(x,Q2)dx\Gamma_1(Q^2)=\int_0^{1} g_1(x,Q^2) dx, Γ2(Q2)=01g2(x,Q2)dx\Gamma_2(Q^2)=\int_0^1 g_2(x,Q^2) dx and d2(Q2)=01x2[2g1(x,Q2)+3g2(x,Q2)]dxd_2 (Q^2) = \int_0^1 x^2[ 2g_1(x,Q^2) + 3g_2(x,Q^2)] dx for the neutron in the range 0.1 GeV2^2 Q2\leq Q^2 \leq 0.9 GeV2^2 with good precision. Γ1(Q2) \Gamma_1(Q^2) displays a smooth variation from high to low Q2Q^2. The Burkhardt-Cottingham sum rule holds within uncertainties and d2d_2 is non-zero over the measured range.Comment: 5 pages, 2 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev. Lett..     The Q^2 evolution of the generalized Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron using a He-3 target

    We present data on the inclusive scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized He-3 target at energies from 0.862 to 5.06 GeV, obtained at a scattering angle of 15.5 degrees. Our data include measurements from the quasielastic peak, through the resonance region, to the beginning of the deep inelastic regime, and were used to determine the spin difference in the virtual photoabsorption cross section. We extract the extended Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn integral for the neutron in the range of 4-momentum transfer squared Q^2 of 0.1-0.9 GeV.Comment: 14 pages of text when TeXed in preprint format with figures embedded.
