    The role of toilet hygiene in transmission of vaginal and urinary tract infections in Huis Welgemoed, CUT Campus

    Published ArticleThe 2012 residents of Huis Welgemoed, a residence for female students at Central University of Technology, Free State Bloemfontein Campus have reported a high prevalence of infections of the vagina and the urinary tract. They assume that this problem is associated with poor hygienic conditions in the toilets of their residence. However, this assumption may not be entirely true, as other factors may also contribute to their problem. Previous studies have shown that there is an evident relation of vaginitis and urinary tract infections (UTI) among students and the practices of personal hygiene or the level of toilet sanitation in their residences. Especially in facilities where the students have complained about the hygiene state of their residence toilets as unsatisfactory. This preliminary study has shown that the residence conforms to the standards set out by the S.A. requirements for toilets in student housing of 1 toilet per 6 students and that the cleaning materials and methods used by staff are adequate. Interestingly, the authors have found that a lack of knowledge around UTI's and VI's regarding basic prevention strategies is most probably the cause of the high incidence of these two types of infections

    Functional health state description and valuation by people aged 65 and over:a pilot study

    Abstract Background Assessing quality of life among the elderly is a complex and multifaceted issue. Elderly people might find valuing and describing their personal experience of quality of life (QoL) demanding and cumbersome. This study therefore sought to determine the feasibility of administering two questionnaires in two samples of elderly people. Methods A preference-based instrument (EQ-5D + C) and a currently achieved functioning questionnaire (CAF) were utilized. Two pilot studies were performed. The first was performed in South Africa (n = 30), designed to test whether elderly respondents could complete and understand the two questionnaires and also to indicate which valuation method, visual analogue scale or time trade off they preferred. A second pilot study was performed in the Netherlands (n = 30), designed to investigate the use of both questionnaires in determining quality of life and health state valuations in a Dutch sample of elderly. Results Seventy percent of the South African respondents indicated that they preferred the visual analogue scale (VAS) method, when compared to the time trade-off (TTO). In both the South African and the Dutch pilot studies, the respondents, with different dependency levels, were able to use both questionnaires to determine health state descriptions and valuations. When ranking the profiles from fewer to more problems, the EQ-5D + C exhibits a gradual downwards trend, with a maximum of 100 and minimum VAS value of 41. The CAF also exhibits a gradual downwards trend, with a maximum of 1.00 and minimum VAS value of 36. Conclusions The results indicate that individuals from different parts of the world are able to complete, describe, and value the questionnaires. It is our recommendation that a comprehensive study should be done, which includes both the EQ-5D + C questionnaire and the CAF questionnaire, since the two questionnaires have proven to be feasible in providing information on quality of life and well-being of elderly people

    Residual stress distribution and the concept of total fatigue stress in laser and mechanically formed commercially pure grade 2 titanium alloy plates

    Abstract: This paper discusses the investigation of residual stresses developed as a result of mechanical and laser forming processes in commercially pure grade 2 Titanium alloy plates as well as the concept of total fatigue stress. The intention of the study was to bend the plates using the respective processes to a final radius of 120mm using both processes. The hole drilling method was used to measure residual strains in all the plates. High stress gradients were witnessed in the current research and possible cases analyzed and investigated. The effects of processing speeds and powers used also played a significant role in the residual stress distribution in all the formed plates. A change in laser power resulted in changes to residual stress distribution in the plates evaluated. This study also dwells into how the loads that are not normally incorporated in fatigue testing influence fatigue life of commercially pure grade 2 Titanium alloy plates..

    Response of Ti microstructure in mechanical and laser forming processes

    Microstructural deformation mechanisms present during three different forming processes in commercially pure Ti were analysed. Room temperature mechanical forming, laser beam forming and a combination of these two processes were applied to thick metal plates in order to achieve the same final shape. An electron backscatter diffraction technique was used to study the plate microstructure before and after applying the forming processes. Substantial differences among the main deformation mechanisms were clearly detected. In pure mechanical forming at room temperature, mechanical twinning predominates in both compression and tensile areas. A dislocation slip mechanism inside the compression and tensile area is characteristic of the pure laser forming process. Forming processes which subsequently combine the laser and mechanical approaches result in a combination of twinning and dislocation mechanisms. The Schmid factor at an individual grain level, the local temperature and the strain rate are factors that determine which deformation mechanism will prevail at the microscopic level. The final microstructures obtained after the different forming processes were applied are discussed from the point of view of their influence on the performance of the resulting formed product. The observations suggest that phase transformation in Ti is an additional microstructural factor that has to be considered during laser forming

    Functioning and quality of life in Dutch oldest old with diverse levels of dependency

    Background: Frequently, a questionnaire like the EQ-5D is applied to investigate elderly health-related quality of life (HRQoL), but current literature suggests that inputs that go beyond these traditional health aspects might be of importance. The capability approach is a different method, which integrates several non-health-related factors to define the well-being of the oldest old. Objective: We propose to investigate the differences in oldest old functionings and quality of life (QoL), given different levels of dependency, using both a utility-based (EQ-5D+C) and capability-based (Currently Achieved Functioning) questionnaire. Methods: We interviewed 99 Dutch elderly, living in the Groningen, Veendam, and Hoogeveen areas. The average age of the elderly was 80 years, who were living independently, still looking after themselves; living semi-dependently with moderate care; or living in a nursing home requiring consistent care. Results: The utility score for the dependent group is the lowest of all three groups, across the diseases investigated in this study. The respective average utility scores calculated for the dependent, semi-dependent, and independent subgroups were 0.56 (SD +/- 0.10); 0.84 (SD +/- 0.11), and 0.69 (SD +/- 0.13). Mobility and pain were reported to be the major domains where problems appeared across the three groups. Additionally, dependent elderly experience deficits in the role and control functionings while the other two subgroups experience deficits in pleasure and security. Conclusion: The results suggest that it is important to take note of the achievability of functionings and HRQoL, in addition to care dependency, to obtain QoL and well-being outcomes of the oldest old

    Renewing Criminalized and Hegemonic Cultural Landscapes

    The Mafia's long historical pedigree in Mezzogiorno, Southern Italy, has empowered the Mafioso as a notorious, uncontested, and hegemonic figure. The counter-cultural resistance against the mafiosi culture began to be institutionalized in the early 1990s. Today, Libera Terra is the largest civil society organization in the country that uses the lands confiscated from the Mafia as a space of cultural repertoire to realize its ideals. Deploying labor force through volunteer participation, producing biological fruits and vegetables, and providing information to the students on the fields are the principal cultural practices of this struggle. The confiscated lands make the Italian experience of anti-Mafia resistance a unique example by connecting the land with the ideals of cultural change. The sociocultural resistance of Libera Terra conveys a political message through these practices and utters that the Mafia is not invincible. This study draws the complex panorama of the Mafia and anti-Mafia movement that uses the ‘confiscated lands’ as cultural and public spaces for resistance and socio-cultural change. In doing so, this article sheds new light on the relationship between rural criminology and crime prevention policies in Southern Italy by demonstrating how community development practice of Libera Terra changes the meaning of landscape through iconographic symbolism and ethnographic performance

    A perspective on radical transformations to sustainability: resistances, movements and alternatives

    A transformation to sustainability calls for radical and systemic societal shifts. Yet what this entails in practice and who the agents of this radical transformation are require further elaboration. This article recenters the role of environmental justice movements in transformations, arguing that the systemic, multi-dimensional and intersectional approach inherent in EJ activism is uniquely placed to contribute to the realization of equitable sustainable futures. Based on a perspective of conflict as productive, and a “conflict transformation” approach that can address the root issues of ecological conflicts and promote the emergence of alternatives, we lay out a conceptual framework for understanding transformations through a power analysis that aims to confront and subvert hegemonic power relations; that is, multi-dimensional and intersectional; balancing ecological concerns with social, economic, cultural and democratic spheres; and is multi-scalar, and mindful of impacts across place and space. Such a framework can help analyze and recognize the contribution of grassroots EJ movements to societal transformations to sustainability and support and aid radical transformation processes. While transitions literature tends to focus on artifacts and technologies, we suggest that a resistance-centred perspective focuses on the creation of new subjectivities, power relations, values and institutions. This recenters the agency of those who are engaged in the creation and recuperation of ecological and new ways of being in the world in the needed transformation

    Recombinant Probiotic Expressing Listeria Adhesion Protein Attenuates Listeria monocytogenes Virulence In Vitro

    BACKGROUND: Listeria monocytogenes, an intracellular foodborne pathogen, infects immunocompromised hosts. The primary route of transmission is through contaminated food. In the gastrointestinal tract, it traverses the epithelial barrier through intracellular or paracellular routes. Strategies to prevent L. monocytogenes entry can potentially minimize infection in high-risk populations. Listeria adhesion protein (LAP) aids L. monocytogenes in crossing epithelial barriers via the paracellular route. The use of recombinant probiotic bacteria expressing LAP would aid targeted clearance of Listeria from the gut and protect high-risk populations from infection. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: The objective was to investigate the ability of probiotic bacteria or LAP-expressing recombinant probiotic Lactobacillus paracasei (Lbp(LAP)) to prevent L. monocytogenes adhesion, invasion, and transwell-based transepithelial translocation in a Caco-2 cell culture model. Several wild type probiotic bacteria showed strong adhesion to Caco-2 cells but none effectively prevented L. monocytogenes infection. Pre-exposure to Lbp(LAP) for 1, 4, 15, or 24 h significantly (P<0.05) reduced adhesion, invasion, and transepithelial translocation of L. monocytogenes in Caco-2 cells, whereas pre-exposure to parental Lb. paracasei had no significant effect. Similarly, Lbp(LAP) pre-exposure reduced L. monocytogenes translocation by as much as 46% after 24 h. Lbp(LAP) also prevented L. monocytogenes-mediated cell damage and compromise of tight junction integrity. Furthermore, Lbp(LAP) cells reduced L. monocytogenes-mediated cell cytotoxicity by 99.8% after 1 h and 79% after 24 h. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: Wild type probiotic bacteria were unable to prevent L. monocytogenes infection in vitro. In contrast, Lbp(LAP) blocked adhesion, invasion, and translocation of L. monocytogenes by interacting with host cell receptor Hsp60, thereby protecting cells from infection. These data show promise for the use of recombinant probiotics in preventing L. monocytogenes infection in high-risk populations
