Promoting hotel innovation with social media use

    Get PDF
Service innovation has turned to be essential for hotels, to cope with current turbulent environment and quickly adapt to customers changing needs. To maintain competitiveness, hotels need to differentiate from competitors, improving existing services or offering new ones, creating memorable experiences for customers. To enhance innovation, hospitality firms are increasingly engaging customers in co-creation activities, to capture valuable knowledge, and crowdsource ideas. Additionally, absorptive capacity is emphasized as a significant antecedent of innovation activity in the tourism and hospitality industry. It is defined as the firm’s ability to identify, acquire, and use external knowledge to generate competitive products. Consequently, this organizational capability is emphasized as a key driver of service innovation. Moreover, today travel has become inherently technological, and tourism activity is powered by social media tools. These platforms facilitate connectivity, information sharing, and consumer generated content. The emergence of social media not only has transformed customer relations but is also changing internal firm processes such as innovation. However, despite the relevance of the topic, as tourism is one of the main economic activities in Spain, empirical evidence about the main antecedents of service innovation in hotels remain scarce. To extend knowledge on the issue, in the current study we empirically examine how social media use can foster service innovation, analysing also the role of customer co-creation and absorptive capacity in this phenomenon. Results confirm how service innovation has become a strategic priority for hotels to face current changing markets. Findings provide a holistic understanding of the chain of effects that leads to innovativeness when using social media, and offer relevant implications for academics and hotel managers.Universidad de Málaga. Optimum control of broadband noise by arrays of cylindrical units made of a recycled material

[EN] We report acoustic barriers that are designed to attenuate efficiently broadband noise. The barriers are structures consisting of only three layers of cylindrical units containing rubber crumb, a sound absorbing material obtained from recycling used tires. An optimization algorithm is developed to obtain the material distribution and dimensions of the building units giving the best attenuation properties for traffic noise, which is here chosen as an example in which the design procedure is applied. A good agreement is found between predictions and measurements for a 3 m height barrier that has been characterized in a transmission room. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. This work work was supported by projects from the University of Granada (Spain) [grant number: PP2022.PP.11]; the Andalusian Regional Government [grant number: P20_00568]; and the European Regional Development Fund [grant numbers: B-SEJ-042-UGR18, A-SEJ-192-UGR20].The strategic use of social media tools facilitates firms' entrepreneurial capabilities, enabling them to become more innovative, increasing their proactivity, and helping them to renew themselves internally. In today's turbulent landscape, organizational resilience has emerged as a key variable for responding to external challenges and facing uncertainty. In this context, our study aims to analyze the role of social media use as an antecedent of corporate entrepreneurship and firm performance in Spanish SMEs, while also examining the mediating role of organizational resilience in this process. Analyzing data from a sample of 259 firms, we tested our proposed hypotheses using structural equation modeling. The results confirm that use of social media tools positively impacts the entrepreneurial capabilities of the SMEs examined. The findings also stress the strategic relevance of organizational resilience, which exerts a perfect mediating impact on firm performance. These findings have significant implications for managers, as they show the path managers must take to benefit from social media use, become more entrepreneurial and resilient, and achieve business success in these turbulent times.University of Granada (Spain) PP2022.PP.11Andalusian Regional Government P20_00568European Regional Development Fund B-SEJ-042-UGR18, A-SEJ-192-UGR2

The strategic use of Social Media can leverage innovation, relationships with customers, and the entrepreneurial orientation of the firm, as it provides useful knowledge to find new opportunities for innovation. Despite the relevance of this phenomenon to current hypercompetitive environments, empirical research on the topic remains scarce. To advance knowledge of this issue, the main purpose of the paper is to examine how Social Media use impacts the different dimensions of Corporate Entrepreneurship. Building on a sample of 201 technological firms, findings confirm that the use of Social Media tools impacted all dimensions of Corporate Entrepreneurship and enhanced firm performance. This paper contributes to the literature by empirically confirming how Social Media use helps to create business value. The study results also have important implications for managers, as they show the pathway managers must follow to harness the benefits of Social Media use to become more entrepreneurial. This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Economy, Industry, and Competitiveness within the framework of two projects: ECO2017-88222-P and B-SEJ-042-UGR18; and was supported also with funds provided by the University of Malaga

The missing link: Creating value with Social Media use in hotels

    Get PDF
Social Media has transformed the way firms relate to the market. Hotels all over the world are increasingly using these tools, integrating them into their Customer Relationship Management (CRM) strategies to engage customers in active conversations. The use of Social Networking and Review Sites like Tripadvisor has become all pervasive, and hotels are investing large sums of money in engaging customers via Social Media. However, there is a certain degree of skepticism about how these technologies can help to create value. To shed light on the topic, based on a sample of 222 Spanish hotels, this study examines the real impact of Social Media use, showing the key role played by Social CRM capabilities in the process of value creation with these tools. By building on the Resource-based theory, the proposed model shows the pathway between Social Media use and organizational performance, in terms of profitability, sales and customer retention. We thank the anonymous reviewers for their valuable input in the review of this article and the public funding of the projects P11-SEJ-7988 and ECO2017-88222

    Get PDF
<br /
