L’histoire du Québec au travers de l’histoire du cinéma québécois. Le cinéma québécois a-t-il le goût de l’histoire ?

Deux histoires sont ici rapprochées, chacune avec ses multiples dimensions, ses points de vue croisés, ses amnésies et ses fixations. La première, c’est celle qui rassemble, dans la mémoire dispersée des individus ou dans celle ordonnée des études historiques, les événements militaires, politiques, économiques ou culturels, les projets politiques et les affaires de l’État, les morales, les modes et les passions de groupes sociaux, la mentalité particulière de chaque époque. La deuxième, c’est celle du cinéma québécois, dans la diversité de ses figures, de ses styles, de ses genres, de ses propagandes, de ses champs sociaux, de ses acteurs. Le rapprochement de ces deux histoires fait voir que, si elles n’ont jamais cessé d’interférer l’une avec l’autre, les modes de cette interférence ont été très divers : tantôt, les affaires de l’État ont déterminé la représentation de la nation ; tantôt, les projets politiques ont servi à l’élan de création ; tantôt, des événements militaires sont restés oubliés par l’image ; tantôt, des batailles sociales ont représenté des raisons d’être du cinéma ; tantôt, le cinéma a fait l’histoire, etc.This article brings together two histories, each with its own multiple aspects, different points of view, forms of amnesia and obsessions. The first is the history found in the dispersed memory of individuals or in the orderly form of historical studies: military, political, economic or cultural events; political projects and the affairs of state; the morals, fashions and passions of social groups; and the mentality unique to every era. The second history is that of Quebec cinema in the diversity of its devices, styles, genres, propaganda, social terrain and agents. By bringing these two histories together we find that, although they have never failed to interfere with each other, the forms of this interference have been highly diverse: at times the affairs of state have determined how the nation is represented; at others political projects have impelled artistic creation; at others military events have been forgotten by images; at others social battles have represented cinema’s raison d’être; at others film has made history; etc

Le Fascinateur et la Bonne Presse : des médias catholiques pour publics francophones

Le Fascinateur and « La Bonne Presse » : Catholic Media for Francophone Publics. Through a study of « La Bonne Presse » and its magazine Le Fascinateur (1903-1938), this paper sheds light on an unfamiliar aspect of France and Quebec's intertwining cinematic traditions. Important questions are raised regarding Catholic cinema and the relationship between the Catholic Church and film. « La Bonne Presse » participated actively in production (prints, magic lantern slides, films), marketing and even in the manufacturing of equipment. All these activities faced competition from secular groups in France who were equally involved in the film industry. The beliefs held by « La Bonne Presse », as well as its productions, also existed in Quebec, where the Catholic Church was concerned with overpowering the Free Masons. As a result, « Le Bon Cinéma National » was founded in 1907. This company focused on the diffusion of moral or religious films, frequently distributing exactly the same programs as « La Bonne Presse ». Certain individuals demanded even stricter censorship. This paper demonstrates that within their cinematic histories, France and Quebec do indeed share a common destiny and parallel ambitions

Npas4: Linking Neuronal Activity to Memory

Immediate-early genes (IEGs) are rapidly activated after sensory and behavioral experience and are believed to be crucial for converting experience into long-term memory. Neuronal PAS domain protein 4 (Npas4), a recently discovered IEG, has several characteristics that make it likely to be a particularly important molecular link between neuronal activity and memory: it is among the most rapidly induced IEGs, is expressed only in neurons, and is selectively induced by neuronal activity. By orchestrating distinct activity-dependent gene programs in different neuronal populations, Npas4 affects synaptic connections in excitatory and inhibitory neurons, neural circuit plasticity, and memory formation. It may also be involved in circuit homeostasis through negative feedback and psychiatric disorders.
