Distinguishing nanowire and nanotube formation by the deposition current transients
AbstractHigh aspect ratio Ni nanowires (NWs) and nanotubes (NTs) were electrodeposited inside ordered arrays of self-assembled pores (approximately 50 nm in diameter and approximately 50 μm in length) in anodic alumina templates by a potentiostatic method. The current transients monitored during each process allowed us to distinguish between NW and NT formation. The depositions were long enough for the deposited metal to reach the top of the template and form a continuous Ni film. The overfilling process was found to occur in two steps when depositing NWs and in a single step in the case of NTs. A comparative study of the morphological, structural, and magnetic properties of the Ni NWs and NTs was performed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and vibrating sample magnetometry, respectively.M. Effect of the solvent on the conformation of monocrotaline as determined by isotropic and anisotropic NMR parameters.
The conformation in solution of monocrotaline, a pyrrolizidine alkaloid presenting an eleven-membered macrocyclic diester ring, has been investigated using a combination of isotropic and anisotropic NMR parameters measured in four solvents of different polarity (D2 O, DMSO-d6 , CDCl3 , and C6 D6 ). Anisotropic NMR parameters were measured in different alignment media, based on their compatibility with the solvent of interest: cromoglycate liquid crystal solution was used for D2 O, while a PMMA polymer gel was chosen for CDCl3 and C6 D6 , and a poly-HEMA gel for DMSO-d6 . Whereas the pyrrolizidine ring shows an E6 exo-puckered conformation in all of the solvents, the macrocyclic eleven-membered ring adopts different populations of syn-parallel and anti-parallel relative orientation of the carbonyl groups according to the polarity of the solvent

Direct targeting of hippocampal neurons for apoptosis by glucocorticoids is reversible by mineralocorticoid receptor activation
Prova tipográfica (In Press)An important question arising from previous observations in vivo is whether glucocorticoids
can directly influence neuronal survival in the hippocampus. To this end, a primary postnatal
hippocampal culture system containing mature neurons and expressing both glucocorticoid
(GR) and mineralocorticoid (MR) receptors was developed. Results show that the GR agonist
dexamethasone (DEX) targets neurons (microtubule-associated protein 2-positive cells) for
death through apoptosis. GR-mediated cell death was counteracted by the MR agonist
aldosterone (ALDO). Antagonism of MR with spironolactone ([7a-(acetylthio)-3-oxo-17a-pregn-
4-ene,21 carbolactone] (SPIRO)) causes a dose-dependent increase in neuronal apoptosis in
the absence of DEX, indicating that nanomolar levels of corticosterone present in the culture
medium, which are sufficient to activate MR, can mask the apoptotic response to DEX. Indeed,
both SPIRO and another MR antagonist, oxprenoate potassium ((7a,17a)-17-Hydroxy-3-oxo-7-
propylpregn-4-ene-21-carboxylic acid, potassium salt (RU28318)), accentuated DEX-induced
apoptosis. These results demonstrate that GRs can act directly to induce hippocampal
neuronal death and that demonstration of their full apoptotic potency depends on abolition of
survival-promoting actions mediated by MR
Clinical features and outcomes of Streptococcus anginosus group infective Endocarditis: a multicenter matched cohort study
[EN] Background. Although Streptococcus anginosus group (SAG) endocarditis is considered a severe disease associated with abscess
formation and embolic events, there is limited evidence to support this assumption.
Methods. We performed a retrospective analysis of prospectively collected data from consecutive patients with definite SAG
endocarditis in 28 centers in Spain and Italy. A comparison between cases due to SAG endocarditis and viridans group streptococci
(VGS) or Streptococcus gallolyticus group (SGG) was performed in a 1:2 matched analysis.
Results. Of 5336 consecutive cases of definite endocarditis, 72 (1.4%) were due to SAG and matched with 144 cases due to VGS/
SGG. SAG endocarditis was community acquired in 64 (88.9%) cases and affected aortic native valve in 29 (40.3%). When comparing
SAG and VGS/SGG endocarditis, no significant differences were found in septic shock (8.3% vs 3.5%, P = .116); valve disorder,
including perforation (22.2% vs 18.1%, P = .584), pseudoaneurysm (16.7% vs 8.3%, P = .108), or prosthesis dehiscence (1.4%
vs 6.3%, P = .170); paravalvular complications, including abscess (25% vs 18.8%, P = .264) and intracardiac fistula (5.6% vs 3.5%,
P = .485); heart failure (34.7% vs 38.9%, P = .655); or embolic events (41.7% vs 32.6%, P = .248). Indications for surgery (70.8% vs
70.8%; P = 1) and mortality (13.9% vs 16.7%; P = .741) were similar between groups.
Conclusions. SAG endocarditis is an infrequent but serious condition that presents a prognosis similar to that of VGS/SGG.This work was supported by Plan Nacional de I+D+i

Effectiveness and safety of first-generation protease inhibitors in clinical practice: Hepatitis C virus patients with advanced fibrosis
AIM: To evaluates the effectiveness and safety of the first generation, NS3/4A protease inhibitors (PIs) in clinical practice against chronic C virus, especially in patients with advanced fibrosis.
METHODS: Prospective study and non-experimental analysis of a multicentre cohort of 38 Spanish hospitals that includes patients with chronic hepatitis C genotype 1, treatment-nai¨ve (TN) or treatment-experienced (TE),
who underwent triple therapy with the first generation NS3/4A protease inhibitors, boceprevir (BOC) and telaprevir (TVR), in combination with pegylated interferon and ribavirin. The patients were treatment in routine practice settings. Data on the study population and on adverse clinical and virologic effects were compiled during the treatment period and during follow up.
RESULTS: One thousand and fifty seven patients were included, 405 (38%) were treated with BOC and 652 (62%) with TVR. Of this total, 30% (n = 319) were TN and the remaining were TE: 28% (n = 298) relapsers, 12% (n = 123) partial responders (PR), 25% (n = 260) null-responders (NR) and for 5% (n = 57) with prior response unknown. The rate of sustained virologic response (SVR) by intention-to-treatment (ITT) was greater in those treated with TVR (65%) than in those treated with BOC (52%) (P < 0.0001), whereas by modified intention-to-treatment (mITT) no were found significant differences. By degree of fibrosis, 56% of patients were F4 and the highest SVR rates were recorded in the non-F4 patients, both TN and TE. In the analysis by groups, the TN patients treated with TVR by ITT showed a higher SVR (P = 0.005). However, by mITT there were no significant differences between BOC and TVR. In the multivariate analysis by mITT, the significant SVR factors were relapsers, IL28B CC and non-F4; the type of treatment (BOC or TVR) was not significant. The lowest SVR values were presented by the F4-NR patients, treated with BOC (46%) or with TVR (45%). 28% of the patients interrupted the treatment, mainly by non-viral response (51%): this outcome was more frequent in the TE than in the TN patients (57% vs 40%, P = 0.01). With respect to severe haematological disorders, neutropaenia was more likely to affect the patients treated with BOC (33% vs 20%, P = 0.0001), and thrombocytopaenia and anaemia, the F4 patients (P = 0.000, P = 0.025, respectively).
CONCLUSION: In a real clinical practice setting with a high proportion of patients with advanced fibrosis, effectiveness of first-generation PIs was high except for NR patients, with similar SVR rates being achieved by BOC and TVR
Climate change facilitated the early colonization of the Azores Archipelago during medieval times
Humans have made such dramatic and permanent changes to Earth's landscapes that much of it is now substantially and irreversibly altered from its preanthropogenic state. Remote islands, until recently isolated from humans, offer insights into how these landscapes evolved in response to human-induced perturbations. However, little is known about when and how remote systems were colonized because archaeological data and historical records are scarce and incomplete. Here, we use a multiproxy approach to reconstruct the initial colonization and subsequent environmental impacts on the Azores Archipelago. Our reconstructions provide unambiguous evidence for widespread human disturbance of this archipelago starting between 700 -60/+50 and 850 -60/+60 Common Era (CE), ca. 700 y earlier than historical records suggest the onset of Portuguese settlement of the islands. Settlement proceeded in three phases, during which human pressure on the terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems grew steadily (i.e., through livestock introductions, logging, and fire), resulting in irreversible changes. Our climate models suggest that the initial colonization at the end of the early Middle Ages (500 to 900 CE) occurred in conjunction with anomalous northeasterly winds and warmer Northern Hemisphere temperatures. These climate conditions likelyinhibited exploration from southern Europe and facilitated human settlers from the northeast Atlantic. These results are consistent with recent archaeological and genetic data suggesting that the Norse were most likely the earliest settlers on the islands
Consequences of parton's saturation and string's percolation on the developments of cosmic ray showers
At high gluon or string densities, gluons' saturation or the strong
interaction among strings, either forming colour ropes or giving rise to
string's percolation, induces a strong suppression in the particle
multiplicities produced at high energy. This suppression implies important
modifications on cosmic ray shower development. In particular, it is shown that
it affects the depth of maximum, the elongation rate, and the behaviour of the
number of muons at energies around 10^{17}-10^{18} eV. The existing cosmic ray
