El valor de la razón y su relación con la fe. John Henry Newman y C. S. Lewis: una mirada.
Through a comparison of texts by Newman and Lewis, the author shows the relationship
between the two in their analysis of the relationship between faith and reason. The
paper points out the parallelism in the three natural ways of religious knowledge: human
intelligence, experience in life, and the witness of Tradition. It shows how both Newman
and Lewis attempted to understand their own “intelligence of faith” in relation to their
understanding of reality in such a way that faith would have a real impact on life.
Three-dimensional dielectric crystalline waveguide beam splitters in mid-infrared band by direct femtosecond laser writing
We report on the fabrication of three-dimensional waveguide beam splitters in a dielectric Bi4Ge3O12 (BGO) crystal by direct femtosecond laser writing. In the laser written tracks of BGO crystal, positive refractive index is induced, resulting in so-called Type I configuration waveguiding cores. The “multiscan” technique is utilized to shape cores with designed cross-sectional geometry in order to achieve guidance at mid-infrared wavelength of 4 μm. The fundamental mode guidance along both TE and TM polarizations has been obtained in the waveguide structures. With this feature, we implement beam splitters from 2D to 3D geometries, and realize 1 × 2, 1 × 3, and 1 × 4 power splitting at 4μm.This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (No. 11274203), Junta de Castilla y León under project (SA086A12-2), and Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad under project (FIS2013-44174-P), Spain
Self-Regulation in Children with Neurodevelopmental Disorders “SR-MRehab: Un Colegio Emocionante”: A Protocol Study
Self-regulation refers to the ability to control and modulate behavior, and it can include
both emotional and cognitive modulation. Children with neurodevelopmental disorders may show
difficulties in self-regulation. The main objective of this study is to improve self-regulation skills
in children between 6 and 11 years of age with neurodevelopmental disorders. Methodology:
A randomized controlled trial will be conducted with the use of “SR-MRehab: Un colegio
emocionante”, based on a non-immersive virtual reality system where virtual objects can be managed
by children in a natural way using their hands. Children will be recruited from several schools
of Granada (Spain) and they will be randomly allocated to two groups. An assessment will be
conducted before and after the intervention and 24 weeks after the end of the intervention process.
The experimental group will receive the intervention using virtual reality. The control group will
receive a standard self-regulation program. Both interventions will be performed once a week for a
total of 10 sessions. Changes in self-regulation, as well as the acceptability of technology with the use
of SR-MRehab, will be evaluated. The results will be published and will provide evidence regarding
the use of this type of intervention in children with neurodevelopmental disorders. Trial registration:

I.; Alonso, C.; Villagrá, V.; Vázquez, L.; Holgado, P. Optical ridge waveguides in Yb:YAG laser crystal produced by combination of swift carbon ion irradiation and femtosecond laser ablation
We report on the fabrication of optical ridge waveguides in ytterbium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (Yb:YAG) single crystal by applying swift C5+ ion irradiation and the followed femtosecond laser ablation. The planar waveguide layer is first produced by C5+ ion irradiation and the laser ablation is used to microstructure the planar waveguide surface to construct ridge structures. The lowest propagation loss of the ridge waveguide has been determined to be ~2.1 dB/cm. From the confocal micro-fluorescence and micro-Raman spectra obtained from the waveguide regions, the intensities, positions and widths of the emission-line peaks had no obvious changes with respect to those from the bulks, which indicate that C5+ ion irradiation does not affect the bulk-related properties of the Yb:YAG crystal significantly in the waveguide regions. The results obtained in this work suggest potential applications of the Yb:YAG ridge waveguides as integrated laser sources. The work is supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (No. U1332121) and Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad of Spain (FIS2013-44174-P). Synthesis of water-soluble hemicoronenediimides by photocyclization of perylenediimides: Turn-on fluorescent probes in water by complexation with Cucurbit[7]uril or binding to G-quadruplex Motifs
A new series of perylene and hemicoronene diimides, obtained by visible light photocyclization, are presented,
between them some remarkable examples that are soluble in only water, and give nanoparticles by selfassociation. Those compounds work as new fluorescent materials in water by complexation with cucurbit[7]
uril, as well as selective G-quadruplex binding ligands with remarkable cytotoxic activity when the interaction
with G4 was sufficiently strong. We acknowledge the Ministerio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades-FEDER (Grants PID2019-111215RB-100 and RTI2018- 102040-B-100), the Junta de Castilla y León, Consejería de Educación y Cultura y Fondo Social Europeo (Grants BU263P18 and BU305P18), “la Caixa” Foundation (LCF/PR/PR12/11070003) for financial support. References Values of Soluble alpha-Klotho Serum Levels Using an Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay in Healthy Adults Aged 18-85 Years
Hector Vazquez-Lorente (FPU18/03655) and Lucas Jurado-Fasoli (FPU19/01609) are under an FPU fellowship from the Spanish Ministry of Education. This study is part of a Ph.D. thesis conducted in the Biomedicine Doctoral Studies of the University of Granada, Spain. The APC was funded by San Cecilio University Hospital, FIBAO, IBS-Granada, Spain.alpha-Klotho protein is a powerful predictor of the aging process and lifespan. Although lowered circulating soluble alpha-Klotho levels have been observed in aged non-healthy individuals, no specific reference values across a wide range of ages and sex using an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) are available for larger cohorts of healthy individuals. The present analytical cross-sectional study was aimed to establish the reference values of soluble alpha-Klotho serum levels in healthy adults by age and sex groups. A total of 346 (59% women) healthy individuals aged from 18 to 85 years were recruited. Subjects were divided by sex and age as: (i) young (18-34.9 years), (ii) middle-aged (35-54.9 years), and (iii) senior (55-85 years) individuals. The soluble alpha-Klotho levels were measured in serum using ELISA. Senior adults were the age-group that presented the lowest soluble alpha-Klotho serum levels (p < 0.01), with age showing a negative association with soluble alpha-Klotho serum levels (p < 0.001). No differences between sexes were observed. Therefore, soluble alpha-Klotho levels were especially decreased-regardless of sex-in our cohort of healthy individuals because of the physiological decline derived from the aging process. We recommend routine assessments of soluble alpha-Klotho levels using ELISA as a simple and cheap detectable marker of aging that improves quality of life in the elderly.Spanish Government FPU18/03655

Multicenter prospective clinical study to evaluate children short-term neurodevelopmental outcome in congenital heart disease (children NEURO-HEART): study protocol
Congenital heart disease; Neurodevelopment; Predictive markersCardiopatía congénita; Desarrollo neurológico; Marcadores predictivosCardiopaties congènites; Neurodesenvolupament; Marcadors predictiusBackground: Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most prevalent congenital malformation affecting 1 in 100 newborns. While advances in early diagnosis and postnatal management have increased survival in CHD children, worrying long-term outcomes, particularly neurodevelopmental disability, have emerged as a key prognostic factor in the counseling of these pregnancies. Methods: Eligible participants are women presenting at 20 to < 37 weeks of gestation carrying a fetus with CHD. Maternal/neonatal recordings are performed at regular intervals, from the fetal period to 24 months of age, and include: placental and fetal hemodynamics, fetal brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), functional echocardiography,
cerebral oxymetry, electroencephalography and serum neurological and cardiac biomarkers. Neurodevelopmental assessment is planned at 12 months of age using the ages and stages questionnaire (ASQ) and at 24months of age with the Bayley-III test. Target recruitment is at least 150 cases classified in three groups according to three main severe CHD groups: transposition of great arteries (TGA), Tetralogy of Fallot (TOF) and Left Ventricular Outflow Tract Obstruction (LVOTO). Discussion: The results of NEURO-HEART study will provide themost comprehensive knowledge until date of children’s neurologic prognosis in CHD and will have the potential for developing future clinical decisive tools and improving preventive strategies in CHD.RETICS funded by the PN 2018-2021 (Spain), ISCIII- Sub-Directorate General for Research Assessment and Promotion and the European Regional Development Fund (FEDER), reference RD16/002
Proteomic analysis of synovial fibroblasts and articular chondrocytes co-cultures reveals valuable VIP-modulated inflammatory and degradative proteins in osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common musculoskeletal disorder causing a great disability and a reduction in the quality of life. In OA, articular chondrocytes (AC) and synovial fibroblasts (SF) release innate-derived immune mediators that initiate and perpetuate inflammation, inducing cartilage extracellular matrix (ECM) degradation. Given the lack of therapies for the treatment of OA, in this study, we explore biomarkers that enable the development of new therapeutical approaches. We analyze the set of secreted proteins in AC and SF co-cultures by stable isotope labeling with amino acids (SILAC). We describe, for the first time, 115 proteins detected in SF-AC co-cultures stimulated by fibronectin fragments (Fn-fs). We also study the role of the vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) in this secretome, providing new proteins involved in the main events of OA, confirmed by ELISA and multiplex analyses. VIP decreases proteins involved in the inflammatory process (CHI3L1, PTX3), complement activation (C1r, C3), and cartilage ECM degradation (DCN, CTSB and MMP2), key events in the initiation and progression of OA. Our results support the anti-inflammatory and anti-catabolic properties of VIP in rheumatic diseases and provide potential new targets for OA treatment
