New Physics searches in a low threshold scintillating argon bubble chamber measuring coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering in reactors

The sensitivity to New Physics of a low threshold scintillating argon bubble chamber measuring coherent elastic neutrino-nucleus scattering in reactors is reported. Namely, light scalar mediators, sterile neutrino oscillations, unitarity violation, and non-standard interactions are studied. The results indicate that this detector could be able to set stronger constraints than current limits set by the recent COHERENT measurements. Considering the best scenario, a 100 kg detector located 30 m from a 2000 MWth_{th} reactor, a sterile neutrino search would cover most of the space parameter allowed from the reactor anti-neutrino anomaly fit. Unitarity violation studies could set constraints on α11\alpha_{11} more stringent than the current oscillation experiments fit. A low threshold argon detector with very low backgrounds has the potential to explore New Physics in different scenarios and set competitive constraints

Object Detection from Thermal Infrared and Visible Light Cameras in Search and Rescue Scenes

Visual object recognition is a fundamental challenge for reliable search and rescue (SAR) robots, where vision can be limited by lighting and other harsh environmental conditions in disaster sites. The goal of this paper is to explore the use of thermal and visible light images for automatic object detection in SAR scenes. With this purpose, we have used a new dataset consisting of pairs of thermal infrared (TIR) and visible (RGB) video sequences captured from an all-terrain vehicle moving through several realistic SAR exercises participated by actual first response organisations. Two instances of the open source YOLOv3 convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture are trained from annotated sets of RGB and TIR images, respectively. In particular, frames are labelled with four representative classes in SAR scenes comprising both persons civilian and first-responder) and vehicles (Civilian-car and response-vehicle). Furthermore, we perform a comparative evaluation of these networks that can provide insight for future RGB/TIR fusion. This work has been done in the framework of the TRUST-ROB project, funded by the Spanish Government (RTI2018-093421-B-I00). Captopril reduces cardiac inflammatory markers in spontaneously hypertensive rats by inactivation of NF-kB

Abstract

Background

Captopril is an angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor widely used in the treatment of arterial hypertension and cardiovascular diseases. Our objective was to study whether captopril is able to attenuate the cardiac inflammatory process associated with arterial hypertension.

Methods

Left ventricle mRNA expression and plasma levels of pro-inflammatory (interleukin-1β (IL-1β) and IL-6) and anti-inflammatory (IL-10) cytokines, were measured in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and their control normotensive, Wistar-Kyoto (WKY) rats, with or without a 12-week treatment with captopril (80 mg/Kg/day; n = six animals per group). To understand the mechanisms involved in the effect of captopril, mRNA expression of ACE, angiotensin II type I receptor (AT1R) and p22phox (a subunit of NADPH oxidase), as well as NF-κB activation and expression, were measured in the left ventricle of these animals.

Results

In SHR, the observed increases in blood pressures, heart rate, left ventricle relative weight, plasma levels and cardiac mRNA expression of IL-1β and IL-6, as well as the reductions in the plasma levels and in the cardiac mRNA expression of IL-10, were reversed after the treatment with captopril. Moreover, the mRNA expressions of ACE, AT1R and p22phox, which were enhanced in the left ventricle of SHR, were reduced to normal values after captopril treatment. Finally, SHR presented an elevated cardiac mRNA expression and activation of the transcription nuclear factor, NF-κB, accompanied by a reduced expression of its inhibitor, IκB; captopril administration corrected the observed changes in all these parameters.

Conclusion

These findings show that captopril decreases the inflammation process in the left ventricle of hypertensive rats and suggest that NF-κB-driven inflammatory reactivity might be responsible for this effect through an inactivation of NF-κB-dependent pro-inflammatory factors.</p

Extrusion of Ingot and Powder Metallurgy Aluminum Matrix Composites Profiles

Several profiles with the same extrusion ratio were extruded from three monolithic alloys and five aluminum matrix composites (AMCs) prepared by ingot and powder metallurgy (PM). Specifically, AA6061 and AA6063 were reinforced by 10 and 25 vol.% of Al2O3 and MoSi2 intermetallic particles. To study the wear of the dies, high temperature pin-on-disk tests were performed. The results show that the composite profiles present high surface and dimensional quality and that the die steel wears slightly more against the cast composite. Maximum extrusion pressure (Pmax) depends on profile shape and increases in the following order: bar, T, L and U, and tube. It also increases as volume fraction of reinforcement increases. In general, cast materials are easier to extrude than PM ones, and MoSi2 reinforced AMCs are easier to extrude than Al2O3 ones. AMCs processed by PM have significantly higher hardness than the cast AMC and the monolithic alloys. The PM composites do not need any heat treatment to acquire maximum hardness. By adding reinforcing particles to aluminum, a significant increase in tensile strength and stiffness occur. The high tensile strength and modulus of the present PM composites, without a decrease in specific properties, makes these AMCs interesting for structural applications.Spanish project TRACE2009_0251 from MICINN, Spain, and EXTRUGASA, Galicia, Spain, are gratefully acknowledged.
