    An Investigation Into The Drag Increase on Roughen Surface due to Marine Fouling Growth

    Marine biofouling attached to underwater ship hull has caused problems for many years to ship operators. It has been reported to increase the total drag thus can reduce the speed of ship and disturb the overall operation of marine vehicles. Changes laminar to turbulent flow becomes fast when passing through rough ships surface. The current study models the growth of marine fouling for one year periods basis on general cargo vessel. The methods have been used in this studied was model scale 1 : 53. The use of smooth model is also included in order to analyses the difference between the two conditions. Two models of the hull roughness are regular and irregular roughness. The modeling of roughness using sand with a specific size and have been scaled. The results show that an increase in skin friction drag of about 41% per year for biofouling spread not evenly at wetted surface area (WSA)

    Validation of Lumped Mass Lateral Cantilever Shaft Vibration Simulation on Fixed-Pitch Vertical-Axis Ocean Current Turbine

    Research on the emergence of force fluctuations and shaft vibration responses of ocean currents turbine generator become a serious concern to the researchers. This paper was conducted with the aim of investigation into the characteristics of lateral shaft vibration of a fixed-pitch vertical-axis ocean current turbine (VAOCT). The work was carried out numerically and experimentally using tank test. A cantilever type of shaft has been used and modeled using finite element method, and simulated using lumped mass matrix to obtain the vibration characteristics and responses. Variations of incoming fluid velocity and the corresponding rotation velocity (rpm) of VAOCT were used to identify the pattern of lateral displacement responses. Analysis of displacement responses at all nodes in x and y-direction at the same time was carried out. The presents of displacement shapes recognized have close agreement to the 1st mode shape. Potential problems on the tip of shaft obviously due to half of the force of turbine received concentrated at cantilever tip. The pattern of vibration responses from the test data shows suitable with simulation. Periodic pattern responses resulted from simulation and experiment at the validated node produce the minimum displacement error of 14% at Var-3 (U=1 m/s) and maximum of 24% at Var-2 (U=0.9 m/s)

    Development of Catamaran Fishing Vessel

    Multihull due to a couple of advantages has been the topic of extensive research work in naval architecture. In this study, a series of investigation of fishing vessel to save fuel energy was carried out at ITS. Two types of ship models, monohull (round bilge and hard chine) and catamaran, a boat with two hulls (symmetrical and asymmetrical) were developed. Four models were produced physically and numerically, tested (towing tank) and simulated numerically (CFD code). The results of the two approaches indicated that the catamaran mode might have drag (resistance) smaller than those of monohull at the same displacement. A layout of catamaran fishing vessel, proposed here, indicates the freedom of setting the deck equipments for fishing vessel

    Managing the spread of COVID-19 pandemic in Indonesian sea transportation

    COVID-19 has been pandemic since the early 2020 and many efforts have been carried out worldwide. Among others, managing the spread of pandemic has been focused on air transportation since the mobility of people has been more actively using aeroplane hence the possibility of infecting people is much higher. Despite less intense, efforts to minimise the blow-out of COVID-19 in sea transportation have also been conducted. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) released guidance such pretravel information to crews and customers The types of guidance include the following items, namely pre-departure, social distancing, the use of masks, personal hygiene, environmental hygiene, and training. In the case of Indonesia, similar direction is introduced and implemented to cargo and passenger vessels. The current paper discusses the Indonesian regulation of managing COVID-19, which is based on IMO/WHO guidance, together with its implementation in the daily activities of people in sea transportation. A survey questionnaire is made out to collect the relevant information.     Motion characteristics of a modularized floating solar farm in waves

    Modularized floating solar farms exhibit the potential to replace conventional steel-frame ones, effectively remedying hydroelastic issues of a very large floating structure through discrete modules with mechanical connections. However, the response of the discrete modules under cyclic wave loading has not been fully understood. This paper assesses the motion characteristics and expansibility of modularized floaters in waves, based on computational results from fluid–structural interaction simulations. A crucial factor, denoted as the ratio of frame length to wavelength = /, is determined to predict the motions of a large floating solar system in head waves. Results indicate that the motion characteristics is predictable based on the R value. The empirical relationship between the R value and the motion of every unit in an array is analyzed. In particular, the results calculated from using the multiple-rigid-bodies method are also compared with those from using the single-large-hydroelastic-body method, and it was found that these two results are similar when R > 1. This similarity allows for predicting the multi-hinged bodies' behavior in waves through a simplified hydroelastic approach. Overall, this study reports insights that are useful for the design and optimization of modularized solar farms and can help address cyclic loading and motion concerns for long-term durability

    Hepatitis B virus genotypes/subgenotypes in voluntary blood donors in Makassar, South Sulawesi, Indonesia

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Hepatitis B virus (HBV) genotype appears to show varying geographic distribution. Molecular epidemiological study of HBV in particular areas in Indonesia is still limited. This study was aimed to identify the prevalence of HBV genotype/subgenotype and mutations in basal core promoter (BCP) region in voluntary blood donors in Makassar, one of the biggest cities in east part of Indonesia.</p> <p>A total of 214 hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive samples were enrolled in this study. HBV genotype/subgenotype was identified by genotype-specific PCR method or direct sequencing of pre-S region. Mutations in BCP were identified by direct sequencing of the corresponding region.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>HBV/B and HBV/C were detected in 61.21% and 25.23% of the samples, while mix of HBV/B and HBV/C was found in 12.62% of the samples. Based on pre-S region, among HBV/B and HBV/C, HBV/B3 (95.00%) and HBV/C1 (58.82%) were predominant. Interestingly, HBV/D was identified in two samples (22.165.07 and 22.252.07). Complete genome sequences of two HBV/D strains (22.165.07 and 22.252.07) demonstrated that both strains belong to HBV/D6, and the divergence between the two strains were 1.45%, while divergences of both 22.165.07 and 22.252.07 strains with reference strain (<ext-link ext-link-id="AM422939" ext-link-type="gen">AM422939</ext-link>/France) were 2.67%. A1762T/G1764A mutation was observed in 1.96% and 5.36%, whereas T1753V mutation was found in 2.94% and 1.79% of HBV/B and HBV/C, respectively.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>HBV/B and HBV/C are dominant in Makassar, similar to most areas in Indonesia. Mutations in BCP which might be associated with severity of liver disease are less common.</p

    Floating PV systems as an alternative power source: case study on three representative islands of Indonesia

    Floating solar renewable energy is of enormous potential in Indonesia. This paper presents a comprehensive study of the design of Floating Photovoltaic (FPV) systems with Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for three islands in Indonesia. These islands represent three typical scenarios in Indonesia (a) using a national grid powered by fossil fuel generators, (b) using a local grid powered by diesel generators, and (c) no grid at all. In-person surveys were conducted at these islands to collect data, and then FPV and BESS were designed to meet the demands of each island. Subsequently, the systems’ energy simulations were conducted using the System Advisor Model, demonstrating daily energy demand and supply in hour variation. Based on the results, a series of sustainability analyses were created from the aspects of economics, society, and the environment. The economic analysis demonstrated cost savings by using FPV to replace contemporary energy methods. The social analysis provides valuable insights into the local community, forming a demographic profile and obtaining perceptions and opinions regarding the new energy approach. The environmental analysis quantifies the potential CO2 emissions.     Atomic scale strain relaxation in axial semiconductor III-V nanowire heterostructures

    Combination of mismatched materials in semiconductor nanowire heterostructures offers a freedom of bandstructure engineering that is impossible in standard planar epitaxy. Nevertheless, the presence of strain and structural defects directly control the optoelectronic properties of these nanomaterials. Understanding with atomic accuracy how mismatched heterostructures release or accommodate strain, therefore, is highly desirable. By using atomic resolution high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with geometrical phase analyses and computer simulations, we are able to establish the relaxation mechanisms (including both elastic and plastic deformations) to release the mismatch strain in axial nanowire heterostructures. Formation of misfit dislocations, diffusion of atomic species, polarity transfer, and induced structural transformations are studied with atomic resolution at the intermediate ternary interfaces.     Urban Form Energy Use and Emissions in China: Preliminary Findings and Model Proof of Concept

    Urbanization is reshaping China's economy, society, and energy system. Between 1990 and 2008 China added more than 300 million new urban residents, bringing the total urbanization rate to 46%. The ongoing population shift is spurring energy demand for new construction, as well as additional residential use with the replacement of rural biomass by urban commercial energy services. This project developed a modeling tool to quantify the full energy consequences of a particular form of urban residential development in order to identify energy- and carbon-efficient modes of neighborhood-level development and help mitigate resource and environmental implications of swelling cities. LBNL developed an integrated modeling tool that combines process-based lifecycle assessment with agent-based building operational energy use, personal transport, and consumption modeling. The lifecycle assessment approach was used to quantify energy and carbon emissions embodied in building materials production, construction, maintenance, and demolition. To provide more comprehensive analysis, LBNL developed an agent-based model as described below. The model was applied to LuJing, a residential development in Jinan, Shandong Province, to provide a case study and model proof of concept. This study produced results data that are unique by virtue of their scale, scope and type. Whereas most existing literature focuses on building-, city-, or national-level analysis, this study covers multi-building neighborhood-scale development. Likewise, while most existing studies focus exclusively on building operational energy use, this study also includes embodied energy related to personal consumption and buildings. Within the boundaries of this analysis, food is the single largest category of the building energy footprint, accounting for 23% of the total. On a policy level, the LCA approach can be useful for quantifying the energy and environmental benefits of longer average building lifespans. In addition to prospective analysis for standards and certification, urban form modeling can also be useful in calculating or verifying ex post facto, bottom-up carbon emissions inventories. Emissions inventories provide a benchmark for evaluating future outcomes and scenarios as well as an empirical basis for valuing low-carbon technologies. By highlighting the embodied energy and emissions of building materials, the LCA approach can also be used to identify the most intensive aspects of industrial production and the supply chain. The agent based modeling aspect of the model can be useful for understanding how policy incentives can impact individual behavior and the aggregate effects thereof. The most useful elaboration of the urban form assessment model would be to further generalize it for comparative analysis. Scenario analysis could be used for benchmarking and identification of policy priorities. If the model is to be used for inventories, it is important to disaggregate the energy use data for more accurate emissions modeling. Depending on the policy integration of the model, it may be useful to incorporate occupancy data for per-capita results. On the question of density and efficiency, it may also be useful to integrate a more explicit spatial scaling mechanism for modeling neighborhood and city-level energy use and emissions, i.e. to account for scaling effects in public infrastructure and transportation

    Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models in basic and translational breast cancer research

    Patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models of a growing spectrum of cancers are rapidly supplanting long-established traditional cell lines as preferred models for conducting basic and translational preclinical research. In breast cancer, to complement the now curated collection of approximately 45 long-established human breast cancer cell lines, a newly formed consortium of academic laboratories, currently from Europe, Australia, and North America, herein summarizes data on over 500 stably transplantable PDX models representing all three clinical subtypes of breast cancer (ER+, HER2+, and "Triple-negative" (TNBC)). Many of these models are well-characterized with respect to genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic features, metastatic behavior, and treatment response to a variety of standard-of-care and experimental therapeutics. These stably transplantable PDX lines are generally available for dissemination to laboratories conducting translational research, and contact information for each collection is provided. This review summarizes current experiences related to PDX generation across participating groups, efforts to develop data standards for annotation and dissemination of patient clinical information that does not compromise patient privacy, efforts to develop complementary data standards for annotation of PDX characteristics and biology, and progress toward "credentialing" of PDX models as surrogates to represent individual patients for use in preclinical and co-clinical translational research. In addition, this review highlights important unresolved questions, as well as current limitations, that have hampered more efficient generation of PDX lines and more rapid adoption of PDX use in translational breast cancer research
