    A novel hypothesis based on clinical, radiological, and histological data to explain the dentinogenesis imperfecta type II phenotype

    Purpose/Aim: The aim of this study was to explore whether dentinogenesis imperfecta (DGI)-related aberrations are detectable in odontogenic tissues. Materials and Methods: Morphological and histological analyses were carried out on 3 teeth (two maxillary 1st molars, one maxillary central incisor) extracted from a patient with DGI Type II. A maxillary 2nd molar teeth extracted from a healthy patient was used as control. A micro-computed tomographic (μCT) data-acquisition system was used to scan and reconstruct samples. Pentachrome and picrosirius red histologic stains were used to analyze odontogenic tissues and their collagenous matrices. Results: Our findings corroborate DGI effects on molar and incisor root elongation, and the hypo-mineralized state of DGI dentin. In addition to these findings, we discovered changes to the DGI pulp cavity: Reactionary dentin formation, which we theorize is exacerbated by the early loss of enamel, nearly obliterated an acellular but still-vascularized DGI pulp cavity. We also discovered an accumulation of lamellated cellular cementum at the root apices, which we hypothesize compensates for the severe and rapid attrition of the DGI tooth. Conclusions: Based on imaging and histological data, we propose a novel hypothesis to explain the complex dental phenotypes observed in patients with DGI Type II

    Prevalence of Depression among Households in Three Capital Cities of Pakistan: Need to Revise the Mental Health Policy

    BACKGROUND: Pakistan, among the other developing countries, has a higher prevalence rate of depression because of the current social adversities. There is, thus, a great need for systematic studies on prevalence of depression. The current study aims at exploring the prevalence of depression among households in three capital cities of Pakistan. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A sample of N = 820 was randomly selected, and a cross sectional telephone-based study was conducted for a duration of six months. It was found that there was a regional variation in prevalence rates for depression among the three cities. Lahore had the highest number of depressives (53.4%), as compared to Quetta (43.9%) and Karachi (35.7%). Middle age, female gender and secondary school level of education were significantly associated with depression among the study group. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE: The different rates of prevalence among the three cities could be attributed to local cultural influence, geographical locations and social adversities. There is a need for revision of existing health policy by the government

    Introduction: Diabetic foot is a clinical disorder, which is commonly seen in patients with diabetes mellitus. It is also the major cause of below knee amputation in the world. There are many underlying causes such as neuropathic, ischemic, and infectious causes for diabetic foot. Local or systemic complications may develop after snake bite. Case Presentation: We reported a very rare case, involving a 78-year-old male admitted to the Emergency Department, who developed anaphylactic shock and diabetic foot after the snake bite.     A PRACTICAL REAL-TIME POWER QUALITY EVENT MONITORING APPLICATIONS USING DISCRETE WAVELET TRANSFORM AND ARTIFICIAL NEURAL NETWORK

    Determining the events that affect Power Quality (PQ) disturbances is remarkable for consumers. The most important aspects in the assessment of PQ disturbances are real-time monitoring of PQ disturbances and their fast interpretation. In this study, Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) was used as a classifier benefiting from estimated parameters in PQ disturbances based on Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) on the real-time environment for determining the disturbances in power systems. Voltage signals (sag, swell, interruption, transient, harmonic and normal) used in this study were recorded from real grids. DWT was used for featuring the extraction and calculation of the wavelet coefficients, and subsequently, calculated energy levels were used as an input to ANN. The results revealed analyzing the real data processed with DWT and ANN with 100% accuracy proved the superiority of this study. Based on the results of this study, identification of real-time PQ disturbances provided an important advantage for the firms and industry.     Growth and differentiation of prechondrogenic cells on bioactive self-assembled peptide nanofibers

    Restoration of cartilage defect remains a challenge, as the current treatments are ineffective to return tissue to its health. Thus, developing therapies for treatment of cartilage tissue damage caused by common joint diseases including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and accidents is crucial. Sulfated glycosaminoglycan molecules are vital constituents of both developing and mature cartilage extracellular matrix. The interplay between regulator proteins and glycosaminoglycan molecules has an essential role in coordinating differentiation, expansion, and patterning during cartilage development. In this study, we exploited the functional role of an extracellular matrix on chondrogenic differentiation by imitating extracellular matrix both chemically by imparting functional groups of native glycosaminoglycans and structurally through peptide nanofiber network. For this purpose, sulfonate, carboxylate, and hydroxyl groups were incorporated on self-assembled peptide nanofibers. We observed that when ATDC5 cells were cultured on functional peptide nanofibers, they rapidly aggregated in insulin-free medium and formed cartilage-like nodules and deposited sulfated glycosaminoglycans shown by Safranin-O staining. Moreover, collagen II and aggrecan gene expressions revealed by qRT-PCR were significantly enhanced, which indicated the remarkable bioactive role of this nanofiber system on chondrogenic differentiation. Overall, these results show that glycosaminoglycan mimetic peptide nanofiber system provides a promising platform for cartilage regeneration. © 2012 American Chemical Society

    Concept of an Effective Sentinel-1 Satellite SAR Interferometry System

    This brief study introduces a partially working concept being developed at IT4Innovations supercomputer (HPC) facility. This concept consists of several modules that form a whole body of an efficient system for observation of terrain or objects displacements using satellite SAR interferometry (InSAR). A metadata database helps to locate data stored in various storages and to perform basic analyzes. A special database has been designed to describe Sentinel-1 data, on its burst level. Custom Sentinel-1 TOPS processing algorithms allow an injection of coregistered bursts into the database. Once the area of interest is set and basic processing parameters are given, the selected data are merged and processed by the Persistent Scatterers (PS) InSAR method or an optimized Small Baselines (SB) InSAR derivative. Depending on the expected deliverables, the processing results can be post-analyzed using a custom approach, in order to achieve a set of reliable measurement points. Final results can be post-processed and visualized using a custom GIS toolbox, consisting in open-source GIS functionality. The GIS post-processing is enforced by HPC power as well. To demonstrate the practical applicability of the described system, a subsidence area in Konya city, Turkey is used as the study area for Sentinel-1 InSAR evaluation

    Estimated Risk of HIV Acquisition and Practice for Preventing Occupational Exposure: A Study of Healthcare Workers at Tumbi and Dodoma Hospitals, Tanzania.

    Health care workers (HCWs) are at risk of acquiring human immuno-deficiency virus (HIV) and other infections via exposure to infectious patients' blood and body fluids. The main objective of this study was to estimate the risk of HIV transmission and examine the practices for preventing occupational exposures among HCWs at Tumbi and Dodoma Hospitals in Tanzania. This study was carried out in two hospitals, namely, Tumbi in Coast Region and Dodoma in Dodoma Region. In each facility, hospital records of occupational exposure to HIV infection and its management were reviewed. In addition, practices to prevent occupational exposure to HIV infection among HCWs were observed. The estimated risk of HIV transmission due to needle stick injuries was calculated to be 7 cases per 1,000,000 HCWs-years. Over half of the observed hospital departments did not have guidelines for prevention and management of occupational exposure to HIV infections and lacked well displayed health and safety instructions. Approximately, one-fifth of the hospital departments visited failed to adhere to the instructions pertaining to correlation between waste materials and the corresponding colour coded bag/container/safety box. Seventy four percent of the hospital departments observed did not display instructions for handling infectious materials. Inappropriate use of gloves, lack of health and safety instructions, and lack of use of eye protective glasses were more frequently observed at Dodoma Hospital than at Tumbi Hospital. The poor quality of the hospital records at the two hospitals hampered our effort to characterise the risk of HIV infection acquisition by HCWs. Greater data completeness in hospital records is needed to allow the determination of the actual risk of HIV transmission for HCWs. To further reduce the risk of HIV infection due to occupational exposure, hospitals should be equipped with sufficient personal protective equipment (PPE) and HCWs should be reminded of the importance of adhering to universal precautions
