    Consensus-based control for a network of diffusion PDEs with boundary local interaction

    In this paper the problem of driving the state of a network of identical agents, modeled by boundary-controlled heat equations, towards a common steady-state profile is addressed. Decentralized consensus protocols are proposed to address two distinct problems. The first problem is that of steering the states of all agents towards the same constant steady-state profile which corresponds to the spatial average of the agents initial condition. A linear local interaction rule addressing this requirement is given. The second problem deals with the case where the controlled boundaries of the agents dynamics are corrupted by additive persistent disturbances. To achieve synchronization between agents, while completely rejecting the effect of the boundary disturbances, a nonlinear sliding-mode based consensus protocol is proposed. Performance of the proposed local interaction rules are analyzed by applying a Lyapunov-based approach. Simulation results are presented to support the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms

    Professionals and firms of the creative and cultural sector contribute to the creation of business incubators, fablabs and coworking spaces in the historic city, often benefiting from public support. Our paper deals with these creative spaces. It investigates the relationship that architects, as creative professionals and coworking managers, establish with the historic city, the workplace, and the planning and protection rules on buildings. In particular, starting from a research on coworking spaces in the historic District of Villanova, in Cagliari City (Sardinia, IT), this paper critically reflects on the current tools and methods used to map and manage creative spaces in the historic city, making some proposals for their improvement and enforcement in urban regeneration strategies

    In this letter we deal with a class of open-loop unstable reaction-diffusion PDEs with boundary control and Robin-type boundary conditions. A second-order sliding mode algorithm is employed along with the backstepping method to asymptotically stabilize the controlled plant while providing at the same time the rejection of an external persistent boundary disturbance. A constructive Lyapunov analysis supports the presented synthesis, and simulation results are presented to validate the developed approach

    Robust distributed secondary voltage restoration control of ac microgrids under multiple communication delays

    This paper focuses on the robust distributed secondary voltage restoration control of AC microgrids (MGs) under multiple communication delays and nonlinear model uncertainties. The problem is addressed in a multi-agent fashion where the generators’ local controllers play the role of cooperative agents communicating over a network and where electrical couplings among generators are interpreted as disturbances to be rejected. Communications are considered to be affected by heterogeneous network-induced time-varying delays with given upper-bounds and the MG is subjected to nonlinear model uncertainties and abrupt changes in the operating working condition. Robustness against uncertainties is achieved by means of an integral sliding mode control term embedded in the control protocol. Then, the global voltage restoration stability, despite the communication delays, is demonstrated through a Lyapunov-Krasovskii analysis. Given the delays’ bounds, and because the resulting stability conditions result in being non-convex with respect to the controller gain, then a relaxed linear matrix inequalities-based tuning criteria is developed to maximize the controller tuning, thus minimizing the restoration settling-time. By means of that, a criteria to estimate the maximal delay margin tolerated by the system is also provided. Finally, simulations on a faithful nonlinear MG model, showing the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy, are further discussed

    A Sliding Mode Observer design for the Average State Estimation in Large-Scale Systems

    In this letter the average state estimation problem on a large-scale system with only few gateway nodes available for measurements is solved as the design problem of a reduced-order sliding mode observer subjected to unmatched perturbations. Necessary and sufficient conditions to guarantee the exact estimation are derived. Still, even in the case such conditions are not fulfilled, the boundedness of the estimation error is proved. Finally, a criteria to minimize such bound, and a gain adaptation law to trade-off that bound and its convergence rate are provided. Neither the observer complexity nor the estimation error depend explicitly on the size of the system, thus making the approach scalable and computationally tractable. Simulations supporting the effectiveness of the proposed strategy and a comparison with other existing strategies are also provided

    Effects of exogenous lactase administration on hydrogen breath excretion and intestinal symptoms in patients presenting lactose malabsorption and intolerance

    To establish whether supplementation with a standard oral dose of Beta-Galactosidase affects hydrogen breath excretion in patients presenting with lactose malabsorption. METHODS: Ninety-six consecutive patients positive to H2 Lactose Breath Test were enrolled. Mean peak H2 levels, the time to reach the peak H2, the time to reach the cut-off value of 20 ppm, the cumulative breath H2 excretion, the areas under the curve, and a Visual Analogical 10-point Scale for symptoms were calculated. Genotyping of the C/T-13910 variant was carried out. RESULTS: Following the oral administration of Beta-Galactosidase, in 21.88% of the cases, H2 Lactose Breath Test became negative (Group A), while mean peak H2 levels (74.95 ppm versus 7.85), P < 0.0000, in 17.71% (Group B) were still positive, with the H2 level 20 ppm above the baseline, but the peak H2 levels were significantly lower than those observed at the baseline test (186.7 ppm versus 66.64), P < 0.0000, while in 60.41% (Group C) they were still positive with the peak H2 levels similar to those observed at the baseline test (94.43 versus 81.60 ppm). All 96 individuals tested presented the C/C-13910 genotype nonpersistence. CONCLUSIONS: The response to oral administration of Beta-Galactosidase in patients with symptoms of lactose malabsorption presents a significant variability
