The Effects of Unions on Productivity: Evidence from Large Coffee Producers in Guatemala

The general perception of unions in the Guatemalan business community has been that they have a negative effect on firms. Although this is a strong statement, there are very few studies of unionization in Guatemala, and most of them are only descriptive. This paper provides an econometric analysis of the impact of unions on productivity in Guatemala, specifically on the production of coffee. Although union density is low, we conclude from the empirical analysis that there is evidence that unions when present have a negative effect on the productivity of large coffee plantations. We use different estimations of a production function and the effect of unions on productivity. The first uses a union dummy and other independent variables, such as a capital proxy, the proportion of administrative and permanent workers, land per worker, total workers, farm elevation above sea level and a union dummy. The second uses these same equations, but with interaction terms between the original variables and the union dummy. The results show that these other variables, when significant, had a positive effect on productivity. The only is total workers, which could be indicating that diseconomies of scale are present. As for the interaction terms, when a union is present, the productivity of variables such as land per worker and height is reduced significantly. Also, it seems that capital has a larger effect on unionized farms productivity than on non-unionized farms. The presence of permanent workers on farms, both in unionized and non-unionized settings, has a negative effect on productivity.

Hau horrela izanik, aurkezten den Gradu Amaierako Lan honen helburu nagusia profesionalei eta etorkizuneko profesionalei haurren kontrako abusu sexualen formazioa eta detekzio goiztiarrerako baliabideak eskaintzea da. Horretarako bi esku-hartze garatu dira: Rompiendo el Secreto del Abuso Sexual Infantil” I.Jardunaldiak eta izenburu berbereko online ikastaroa. Jardunaldietan profesional, etorkizuneko profesional eta interesdun pertsonen beharrak identifikatu ziren. Horiek guztiak kontuan izanik online ikastaroa planifikatu eta garatu zen, mundu guztiko eta hainbat jarduera profesionaletako 243 pertsonek hartu zuten parte. Ikastaroaren azken erronka sostengu sarea eraikitzeko oinarriak zehaztea izan da.[ES] Aunque hoy en día tres de cada diez niños/as sufren abusos sexuales, los estudios, información y formación respecto al tema es escasa. Siendo esto así, el objetivo final de este Trabajo de Final de Grado es proporcionar formación y herramientas para la detección temprana del ASI y disminuir así las posibles consecuencias físicas y psíquicas del trauma. Para ello se han llevado a cabo dos intervenciones: las I Jornadas “Rompiendo el Secreto del Abuso Sexual Infantil (ASI)” y la formación online del mismo nombre. En las jornadass se identificaron las necesidades de profesionales, futuros profesionales y personas interesadas. Teniendo en cuenta todo lo anterior se planificó y desarrolló una formación en la que tomaron parte 243 profesionales de todo el mundo y diversa índole. Therefore, the main objective of this work is to provide professionals and future professionals with training and resources for early detection of children sexual abuse. To this end, two programs have been developed: “Breaking the secrets of childhood sexual abuse (ASI)” 1st Conference and online course. In the conference the needs of professionals, future professionals and people interested in the subject were identified with a strong demand to create a support network. Establishing the basis for that network has been the last challenge in the planning and development of the online course where 243 people from all over the world and different professional backgrounds took part

Similitud entre documentos multilingües de carácter científico-técnico en un entorno Web

En este artículo se presenta un sistema para la agrupación multilingüe de documentos que tratan temas similares. Para la representación de los documentos se ha empleado el modelo de espacio vectorial, utilizando criterios lingüísticos para la selección de las palabras clave, la fórmula tf-idf para el cálculo de sus relevancias, y RSS feedback y wrappers para actualizar el repositorio. Respecto al tratamiento multilingüe se ha seguido una estrategia basada en diccionarios bilingües con desambiguación. Debido al carácter científico-técnico de los textos se han empleado diccionarios técnicos combinados con diccionarios de carácter general. Los resultados obtenidos han sido evaluados manualmente.In this paper we present a system to identify documents of similar content. To represent the documents we’ve used the vector space model using linguistic knowledge to choose keywords and tf-idf to calculate the relevancy. The documents repository is updated by RSS and HTML wrappers. As for the multilingual treatment we have used a strategy based in bilingual dictionaries. Due to the scientific-technical nature of the texts, the translation of the vector has been carried off by technical dictionaries combined with general dictionaries.
