    Lean Manufacturing: Selected Financial Performance Of Recognized Lean Manufacturers

    Since the Japanese development of lean manufacturing practices after World War II, American companies have slowly begun to embrace the concepts and results offered by the lean manufacturing concept. Companies in America did not fully embrace the value of the processes until the mid to late 1990’s and some firms are finding that financial results that should have been positively impacted immediately are not showing the results promised by Japanese practitioners. Two companies, Delphi and Johnson Controls, were selected for comparative analysis because of the numerous facilities that each have had selected for the Shingo Prize for Excellence in Manufacturing. Both companies have been engrained in the traditional mass-producing methods of American production from mother companies, customers, and suppliers. Both companies have adopted and implemented lean manufacturing into their organizations in the late 1990’s. Using targets set forth by the lean manufacturing leaders of Japan, a comparison will be made of both of these companies as well as comparisons of these two companies to other firms in their industry. The S&P 500 financial ratios will also be used along with those of two of the most recognized leaders in lean manufacturing, Wal-Mart and Toyota, in order to determine the effectiveness of implementation of lean practices by two of the newest leaders in manufacturing excellence. The financial ratios will be evaluated and compared along with reasons for variances that are found in the comparisons

    Whereas comics and graphic novels were once derided as “debased” texts unworthy of consideration in the academic classroom, they have recently gained more acceptance as valid educational resources. In fact, graphic narratives have a long history of success in terms of instruction and engagement, stretching back millennia. Comics can be very effective in academic settings, especially in library instruction, due to their engaging and participatory nature, as well as their ability to model behaviors and imbed lessons within a greater narrative. Many college and university instructors already utilize comics in their classrooms in a variety of manners, from examining existing comics as historical artifacts to intentionally creating comics for instructional purposes and even allowing students to produce their own comics

    Widespread association between the ericoid mycorrhizal fungus Rhizoscyphus ericae and a leafy liverwort in the maritime and sub-Antarctic

    A recent study identified a fungal isolate from the Antarctic leafy liverwort Cephaloziella varians as the ericoid mycorrhizal associate Rhizoscyphus ericae. However, nothing is known about the wider Antarctic distribution of R. ericae in C. varians, and inoculation experiments confirming the ability of the fungus to form coils in the liverwort are lacking. Using direct isolation and baiting with Vaccinium macrocarpon seedlings, fungi were isolated from C. varians sampled from eight sites across a 1875-km transect through sub- and maritime Antarctica. The ability of an isolate to form coils in aseptically grown C. varians was also tested. Fungi with 98–99% sequence identity to R. ericae internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and partial large subunit ribosomal (r)DNA sequences were frequently isolated from C. varians at all sites sampled. The EF4/Fung5 primer set did not amplify small subunit rDNA from three of five R. ericae isolates, probably accounting for the reported absence of the fungus from C. varians in a previous study. Rhizoscyphus ericae was found to colonize aseptically-grown C. varians intracellularly, forming hyphal coils. This study shows that the association between R. ericae and C. varians is apparently widespread in Antarctica, and confirms that R. ericae is at least in part responsible for the formation of the coils observed in rhizoids of field-collected C. varians

    Biomedical applications of polymer and ceramic coatings: a review of recent developments

    Recent literature concerning the use of polymer and ceramic coatings for a variety of biomedical applications is surveyed in this review. Applications have been grouped into six broad categories: orthopaedic materials, cardiovascular stents, antibacterial surfaces, drug delivery, tissue engineering and biosensors. Polymer and ceramic coatings add enhanced corrosion protection, antiwear, antibacterial and biocompatibility properties to various substrates for biomedical applications. Processes favoured for polymer coating formation included dip, electrodeposition, spin (including electrospin) and spray (including electrospray and ultrasonic spray). Ceramic coatings were formed using magnetron sputtering and a combination of 3-D printing and in-situ mineralisation, among others. The review period is from 2017 to the present (mid-2021)

    In this paper we take a step toward addressing a pressing general problem in the development of data visualization systems — how to measure their effectiveness. The step we take is to define a model for specifying the generation of test data that can be em-ployed for standardized and quantitative testing of a system’s per-formance. These test data sets, in conjunction with appropriate testing procedures, can provide a basis for certifying the effective-ness of a visualization system and for conducting comparative studies to steer system development

    Service-oriented visualization applied to medical data analysis

    With the era of Grid computing, data driven experiments and simulations have become very advanced and complicated. To allow specialists from various domains to deal with large datasets, aside from developing efficient extraction techniques, it is necessary to have available computational facilities to visualize and interact with the results of an extraction process. Having this in mind, we developed an Interactive Visualization Framework, which supports a service-oriented architecture. This framework allows, on one hand visualization experts to construct visualizations to view and interact with large datasets, and on the other hand end-users (e.g., medical specialists) to explore these visualizations irrespective of their geographical location and available computing resources. The image-based analysis of vascular disorders served as a case study for this project. The paper presents main research findings and reports on the current implementation status

    Impact of sample acquisition and linear amplification on gene expression profiling of lung adenocarcinoma: laser capture micro-dissection cell-sampling versus bulk tissue-sampling

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The methods used for sample selection and processing can have a strong influence on the expression values obtained through microarray profiling. Laser capture microdissection (LCM) provides higher specificity in the selection of target cells compared to traditional bulk tissue selection methods, but at an increased processing cost. The benefit gained from the higher tissue specificity realized through LCM sampling is evaluated in this study through a comparison of microarray expression profiles obtained from same-samples using bulk and LCM processing.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Expression data from ten lung adenocarcinoma samples and six adjacent normal samples were acquired using LCM and bulk sampling methods. Expression values were evaluated for correlation between sample processing methods, as well as for bias introduced by the additional linear amplification required for LCM sample profiling.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The direct comparison of expression values obtained from the bulk and LCM sampled datasets reveals a large number of probesets with significantly varied expression. Many of these variations were shown to be related to bias arising from the process of linear amplification, which is required for LCM sample preparation. A comparison of differentially expressed genes (cancer vs. normal) selected in the bulk and LCM datasets also showed substantial differences. There were more than twice as many down-regulated probesets identified in the LCM data than identified in the bulk data. Controlling for the previously identified amplification bias did not have a substantial impact on the differences identified in the differentially expressed probesets found in the bulk and LCM samples.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>LCM-coupled microarray expression profiling was shown to uniquely identify a large number of differentially expressed probesets not otherwise found using bulk tissue sampling. The information gain realized from the LCM sampling was limited to differential analysis, as the absolute expression values obtained for some probesets using this study's protocol were biased during the second round of amplification. Consequently, LCM may enable investigators to obtain additional information in microarray studies not easily found using bulk tissue samples, but it is of critical importance that potential amplification biases are controlled for.</p
