Rethinking the Potential of Documentation of Culture as a Data Gathering Practice

In this article, I examine the documentation of culture (DoC). This is the practice of gathering and producing the information and data relevant to intangible cultural phenomena. DoC is generally practiced by teams of documentalists generally outside GLAM institutions (i.e., galleries, libraries, archives and museums). As such, it differs from the preservation and description of concrete objects of cultural heritage done within those institutions. I examine how DoC finds it increasingly difficult to clearly define and communicate its role: a) in relation to LIS; b) to the broader academic community; and c) in digital age of information overload. In this article, I briefly outline the specificity of DoC, its main issues and possible solutions to its current problems

Its main goal is to reconstruct and analyze McClure’s postsecularism by focusing on his interpretations of North American novels

Czesław Miłosz’s ’Dar’(’Gift’) in the light of Jacques Derrida’s philosophy of gift

The aim of this text is to present an attempt at the deconstructionist interpretation of Czesław Miłosz’s verse ‘Dar’ (‘Gift’). On the one hand, this paper emphasizes the moment of ‘dissemination’ of the literary work – the space between the title and ‘the rest’ of the text (which appeals more to the American deconstructionism) is seen as both a connection and an irreducible gap. On the other hand, this ‘dissemination’ is understood in terms offered by J. Derrida’s philosophy of gift. Miłosz used a word ‘gift’ in the title, but in the ‘textual corpus’ he made this donation ‘imperceptible’. This observation enables the Author to interpret Miłosz’s poem in the context of Derrida’s discourse of (im)possibility of gift. Consequently the title will be understood here as a gift to the text (the gift of meaning to the experience described there), but at the same time this gift/title will be seen as irreducibly separated from the ‘rest’ of the text, because of the relation between the title and the ‘textual corpus’

Dokumentacja kultury a cyfrowe zasoby archiwalne. Przypadek Polskiej Bibliografii Literackiej (PBL) i Archiwum Telewizji Polskiej

The article is a case study of cooperation between scientific documentary and bibliographic working group – the Working Group of Current Bibliography (WGCB) of the Institute of Literary Studies, Polish Academy of Sciences, the creator of the Polish Literary Bibliography – and the Polish Television Archives. The cooperation initiated by the WGCB aimed at collecting, in digital form, metadata of archival holdings of the Polish Television (TVP), that were supposed to enrich data resources of the PLB. The case was described in a multi-faceted manner: I) the context was depicted on the basis of merit, i.e. information needs of the PLB on the background of the up-to-date range of television recordings of literature reception and on the background of changing information sources (atrophy of printed sources, arising possibilities of processing digital sources); II) the process of starting the cooperation with the Archives was described, especially the problem of using metadata from an archival database for documenting not particular archival units, but abstractly perceived cultural phenomena (a broadcast, a TV programme, etc.); III) analysis of technical problems with processing data was depicted (results of cooperation between institutions with own data models, created for different purposes); IV) conclusions from the case study were presented: a) about the procedural side of cooperation in using metadata from heritage institutions (the context of metadata standards, various traditions of creating them, and contemporary institutional purposes of managing them); b) about the broader (“soft”) problem of “understanding data” (data literacy) in scientific and cultural institutions.Artykuł stanowi studium przypadku współpracy między naukową pracownią dokumentacyjno-bibliograficzną – Pracownią Bibliografii Bieżącej Instytutu Badań Literackich Polskiej Akademii Nauk, twórczynią Polskiej Bibliografii Literackiej – a Archiwum Telewizji Polskiej. Współpraca zainicjowana przez PBB miała na celu pozyskanie, w formie cyfrowej, metadanych zasobów archiwalnych TVP, które posłużyć miały do wzbogacenia zasobu danych PBL. Przypadek opisano w sposób wieloaspektowy: I) określono merytoryczny kontekst współpracy z perspektywy, tj. potrzeby informacyjne PBL na tle dotychczasowego zakresu dokumentacji telewizyjnej recepcji literatury oraz na tle przemian źródeł informacji (zanikają źródła drukowane, pojawiają się możliwości przetwarzania źródeł cyfrowych); II) opisano proces nawiązywania współpracy z Archiwum, w szczególności problem wykorzystania metadanych archiwalnej bazy danych do celów dokumentacji nie tyle danej jednostki archiwalnej, co raczej abstrakcyjnie pojmowanego zjawiska kulturalnego (audycji, programu telewizyjnego etc.); III) zaprezentowano analizę technicznych problemów związanych z przetwarzaniem danych (będących pokłosiem współpracy instytucji posiadających własne modele danych i to tworzone w innych celach); IV) zaproponowano wnioski z przedstawionego studium przypadku: a) dotyczące formalnej strony współpracy w zakresie wykorzystywania metadanych instytucji dziedzictwa (kontekst standardów metadanych, różnych tradycji ich powstawania oraz współczesnych instytucjonalnych celów zarządzania metadanymi); b) dotyczące szerszego („miękkiego”) problemu „rozumienia danych” (data literacy) w instytucjach nauki i kultury

Richard Rorty’s post-metaphysical discourse in the view of the problem of socio-political commitment

Celem tej pracy jest próba analizy dyskursu filozoficznego Przygodności, ironii i solidarności Richarda Rorty'ego. Szczególnie interesować mnie będzie to, w jaki sposób ów postmetafizyczny dyskurs angażuje się po stronie dość konkretnie określonych ideałów polityczno-społecznych. Będę chciał dowieść, iż czyni to za pomocą tzw. „momentów literackich”. Owe momenty mają u Rorty'ego swoją specyfikę – są m.in. językowo nierewolucyjne, gdyż i sam Rorty był zdeklarowanym, socjaldemokratycznym i liberalnym, reformistą.The aim of the article is an analysis of Richard Rorty’s philosophical discourse Contingency, irony and solidarity. Special attention will be paid to the way how post-metaphysical discourse is engaged in definite socio-political ideals. I will try to prove it is done thanks to “literary moments”. In Rorty’s discourse those moments are specific: they are language non-revolutionary because Rorty was a declared, social democratic and liberal reformist

Documents of a Literary System as a Subject of Empirical Studies

Artykuł identifykuje kategorię „dokumentów systemu literackiego” jako podstawy empirycznych badań literaturoznawczych. Zaprezentowane zostają zarówno literaturoznawcze, jak i dokumentacyjne, bibliograficzne i informacyjno-naukowe aspekty identyfikowania, przetwarzania i wykorzystywania dokumentów w tym obszarze badań. Na podstawie literatury przedmiotu wskazane zostają podstawowe typy takich obiektów oraz ich funkcje w obrębie systemu literackiego. Artykuł wskazuje, że rozproszenie procedur opisu takich obiektów ma kluczowe znaczenie dla powodzenia literaturoznawczych badań empirycznych oraz proponuje potraktowanie tego problemu jako wyzwania dostosowania infrastruktur badawczych do potrzeb empirycznych analiz literatury.The paper identifies the category of “documents of a literary system” as a basis for empirical literary studies research. It presents literature and documentation studies, bibliographical and information-scientific aspects of identifying, processing and using documents in this discipline. Based on the available literature, basic types of such objects and their functions within a literary system are indicated. The paper indicates that the dispersion of descriptive procedures of such objects plays a key role for the success of empirical research in literature studies, and it proposes treating this problem as a challenge in adapting the research infrastructures to the empirical needs of literature analyses

Collective Writing as an Everyday Practice. „Ułomna logicznie”: an Instrumental Case Study

Tekst ten jest rodzajem instrumentalnego studium przypadku. Jako takie łączy empiryczny opis konkretnego fenomenu z teoretycznymi dociekaniami. Artykuł koncentruje się na pojęciu literatury jako praktyki codzienności. Jednym z przykładów tego typu sztuki jest amatorskie współpisanie. Autor prezentuje jedną z form tego typu praktyki – powieść „Ułomna logicznie” pisaną przez uczennice konińskiego liceum. Z jednej strony, w pracy używa się jakościowych metod badawczych do opisu wspomnianej literackiej współpracy. Z drugiej, artykuł próbuje skonceptualizować tę praktykę w szerszym kulturowym i społecznym kontekście, odwołując się do pojęcia „sztuki jako praktyki codzienności”.This paper is a presentation of an instrumental case study. As such, it combines empirical description of a specific phenomenon with theoretical inquiries. The article focuses on the notion of literature as an everyday practice. One example of this sort of art is an amateur collective writing, an example of it being a novel Ułomna logicznie, written by five high-school students from Konin. On the one hand, qualitative research methods are used to describe their literary collaboration. On the other, the article tries to conceptualize this practice in broader cultural and social context, by using the concept of „art as an everyday practice

Space as presented in the novels by Laurence Sterne in the context of the development of the novel genre

Laurence Sterne philosophically relativized the category of space and consistently tried to show epistemological scepticism in his novels. This attitude is different from so called 'classic' novel which emphasizes cultural, social, geographical etc. aspects of space as a fiction's background. Sterne – sometimes even in a discursive way – refused to present these aspects of space and mostly tried to present his narrator's inner space that is being created in the act of narration. To show his sense of relativity and irony, Sterne used some descriptive models, e.g. theatralization. Also, he discussed with typical spatial literary patterns (which he knew for example from adventure novels) by transporting them into his narrative concept of inner space mentioned before. It all indicates that Sterne was aware of the ‘spatial problems’ which novel is said to face in the twentieth century
