Distributed measurement systems have been used in the industry for years and with great success. However new technologies in IoT opens up for new solutions in the world of control and sensory systems. LoRaWAN is one of many protocols made specifically for low-power IoT devices. In this thesis an embedded vibration-sensor has been designed, tested and implemented, using LoRa as communication. A set of vibration-sensors has been deployed in order to simulate a DMS (distributed measurement system) using LoRaWAN as a communications protocol. This thesis investigates synchronization, power-consumption and connectivity properties of LoRaWAN, with a DMS as a use-case. The deployed system managed to successfully gather vibration data and store it on a remote server. A full solution covering all aspects were never deployed. However, a DMS with LoRaWAN as communications were deployed and data was collected. Synchronization was done using LoRa and that proved to be a feasible solution for communications in DMS

TECHNOLOGY FOR KNOWLEDGE WORK: A RELATIONAL PERSPECTIVE

    Get PDF
In this research in progress paper, we consider how two major trends drive digitalization. First, software product management focuses on fast and iterative development where users are involved in the design phase of products through product managers. Second, there is a push toward applying AI in knowledge domains. We show how these trends intensify the need to focus on relations between IS development and use. Through an interpretative case study of digitalization, drawing on ethnographic methods, we investigate key relations and how they compound into constellations of relations. We discuss key constellations of relations, how the data flow between constellations of relations functions, and how we can zoom in and out to understand relations—allowing for a reposition of IS development for AI, both theoretically and practically

The topic I have chosen to highlight in my bachelor thesis is sexual assaults with a closer look at harmful sexual behavior, sexual health and the following issue: “Children and youth who are exposed to sexual assaults: How to recognize harmful sexual behavior, and what can we do to help? Causes and treatment”. You usually see lots of variations in the children’s sexual health. How could you easier recognize the sexual behavior that is normative for the specific children and the youth, and then later consider what is the smartest thing to do? This is a relatively “new” societal issue, and a lot of people lack the competence the need to do the work. In this project, I have tried to explain, discuss and compare my chosen issue with the help of existing articles and research reports

Digital Transformation – A Flow Perspective

    Get PDF
As we move along the ever-transforming world of digital technology and organizations, the perspective of how we view digital transformation (DT) also transforms. The episodic and continuous nature of changes requires an in-depth, nuanced temporal perspective. Through a case study on an incumbent maritime organization chasing new digital value propositions, we explore the flows of actions within DT. We discuss 1) DT as flows of action, 2) the challenges of planning and measuring DT, and 3) how resistance can spur action. Moving further, we argue that this view will enable future research on how to perform DT in a way that considers the convergence of flows of action

Innovation in Large-scale agile -- Benefits and Challenges of Hackathons when Hacking from Home

    Get PDF
Hackathons are events in which diverse teams work together to explore, and develop solutions, software or even ideas. Hackathons have been recognized not only as public events for hacking, but also as a corporate mechanism for innovation. Hackathons are a way for established companies to achieve increased employee wellbeing as well as being a curator for innovation and developing new products. Sudden transition to the work-from-home mode caused by the COVID-19 pandemic first put many corporate events requiring collocation, such as hackathons, temporarily on hold and then motivated companies to find ways to hold these events virtually. In this paper, we report our findings from investigating hackathons in the context of a large agile company by first exploring the general benefits and challenges of hackathons and then trying to understand how they were affected by the virtual setup. We conducted nine interviews, surveyed 23 employees and analyzed a hackathon demo. We found that hackathons provide both individual and organizational benefits of innovation, personal interests, and acquiring new skills and competences. Several challenges such as added stress due to stopping the regular work, employees fearing not having enough contribution to deliver and potential mismatch between individual and organizational goals were also found. With respect to the virtual setup, we found that virtual hackathons are not diminishing the innovation benefits, however, some negative effect surfaced on the social and networking side

Towards a Taylor-Carleman bilinearization approach for the design of nonlinear state-feedback controllers

    Get PDF
The Carleman bilinearization is an approach that performs an exact conversion of a finite-dimensional nonlinear system into an infinite-dimensional bilinear system. A finite-dimensional system is later obtained through a truncation for analysis and control purposes. This paper investigates the linear matrix inequality (LMI)-based design of a switched state-feedback control law for the model obtained via Carleman bilinearization of a first-order nonlinear system. It is shown that in order to obtain feasible design conditions, the performance requirements must be relaxed in a neighborhood of the zero equilibrium point, so that problems arising from the uncontrollability of the linear part of the model can be avoided. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is shown using a numerical example and experimental results using a multi-input tank system.publishedVersio

Interrelation of Digitalization and Digital Transformation in a Maritime Company

    Get PDF
Many organizations must undergo digitalization and digital transformation (DT) simultaneously; in itself, either is daunting. For 15 months, we followed the ongoing digitalization and DT activities at a maritime company with over 3700 employees through a qualitative analysis of 20 interviews, a workshop, and several documents. We see how digitalization and DT are inherently interrelated; DT and digitalization have common enablers through technology such as AI, and common processes in continuous software development. They also share many challenges, including lack of resources and internal resistance against change. Through acquiring data in the digitalization of core services, companies can undergo DT by utilizing data in new and profound ways to build services with new value propositions. In conclusion, digitalization and DT are necessary for incumbent companies and require careful balancing of resources, competence, and technology.publishedVersio

    Get PDF
Background: Despite increasing numbers of applicants to nursing education programs, there are still signs of high dropout rate and a shortage of nurses in the Norwegian healthcare system. Reality shock describes the challenges newly graduated nurses face in the transition from education to working life. Several studies point out that a lack of alignment between theory and practise may lead to uncertainty, stress and a reduced sense of mastery. Therefore, there is a need of increased focus on how education and working life can adapt to each other to strengthen the transition into the profession for newly graduated nurses. Purpose: The purpuse of this study is to gain increased understanding of how newly graduated nurses experience the transition form education to working life. Method: The study has a qualitive deisgn. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with three newly graduated nurses working on a medical ward. Systematic text condensation was used to present the results. Results: The results show that realty shock remains a current and central experience among newly graduated nurses. The informants described the transition from education to working life as abrupt, demanding, and characterized by increased stress and time pressure. Several experienced a feeling of not being able to provide sufficient care to patients and found that the organizational responsibility was more extensive than expected. The informants highlighted the reassurance of having support from colleagues as a positive factor. The opportunity to ask questions and seek help was emphasized as important for coping during the transition. Conclusion: The findings shows that familiarity with the workplace contributed to increased security, professional development, and a sense of mastery among newly graduated nurses. The steep learning curve was experienced as challenging, but also as an opportunity for growth. Organizational competence was highlighted by the informants as insufficiently emphasized in educational institutions, which led to a feeling of being unprepared for administrative tasks in the nursing role. Based on these findings, there appears to be need for closer integration between theory and practice in nursing education, as well as structured support during the transition phase. Such support is essential to ensure a sense of safety and promoting professional and academic growth among newly graduated nurses
