Exploring Pedagogical Empathy of Mathematics Graduate Student Instructors

    Get PDF
Interpersonal relationships are central to the teaching and learning of mathematics. One way that teachers relate to their students is by empathizing with them. In this study, I examined the phenomenon of pedagogical empathy, which is defined as empathy that influences teaching practices. Specifically, I studied how mathematics graduate student instructors conceptualize pedagogical empathy and analyzed how pedagogical empathy might influence their teaching decisions. To address my research questions, I designed a qualitative phenomenological study in which I conducted observations and interviews with 11 mathematics graduate student instructors who were teaching precalculus courses at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln. In the first part of my dissertation, I analyze how the participants in my study conceptualized pedagogical empathy and discuss their views on eight dimensions of empathy identified by researchers in the field of psychology. In the second part of my dissertation, I identify five factors that have the potential to influence instructors’ pedagogical empathy: instructors’ past experiences, students’ mathematical experiences, students’ experiences outside the classroom, the importance of communicating pedagogical empathy to students, and the course structure. Finally, in the third part of my dissertation, I examine how four of my participants reflected on their decision-making through a lens of empathy and argue that pedagogical empathy can be conceptualized as a filter that connects pedagogical content knowledge and emotional knowledge to decision making. My findings suggest that instructors can develop a more empathic disposition towards students over time through reflection. In addition, the conclusions drawn from this research can help inform professional development targeted at novice postsecondary mathematics instructors. Advisors: Nathan Wakefield and Yvonne La

Design, modeling, and control of a two degree of freedom pendulum on an omnidirectional robot

In this thesis a dynamical model for a two degree of freedom inverted pendulum on an omnidirectional cart is developed. This system is actuated not only by the wheels on the cart but also by a quadrotor system used to stabilize the inverted pendulum. The dynamic model is designed to be modular allowing for the substitution of different actuators, electrics, and control algorithms without the need to re-derive the model. The parameters of this system are identified with procedures and background where necessary. This thesis presents two controller methods: PID and LQG controllers. The PID controllers were designed using both hand tuning and model based tuning. The LQG controllers were designed using a systematic procedure to initially choose good weights and adjust the weights based off of systems performance in order to get the most out of the system. All sets of controllers are presented along with a comparison of their behavior and plots comparing the real system to that of the non-linear simulation. The results of this design are discussed along with issues that shaped the design decisions, future work and systems improvements are discussed

Effects of State-Level Funding Systems on Identification Rates of Students with Autism Spectrum Disorders

    Get PDF
Identification rates of children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) have been increasing since the year 2000, while federal special education funding has remained stagnant. Researchers gathered data from states related to individual state funding systems, per pupil spending and identification rates of students with ASD to determine if state spending or special education funding methods affected identification rates of students with ASD. While specific funding methodology did not predict rates of identification or PPS, a correlational analysis of individual state PPS and ASD identification rates did have significant results. Spending amounts per pupil corresponded to rates of identification for ASD

Effects of State-Level Funding Systems on Rates of Students Identified as Other Health Impaired

Since 1978, the Education for All Handicapped Children’s Act (now IDEA) committed Congress to provide 40 percent of the average per pupil spending to educate children with disabilities. While states have used a variety of special education funding formulas to attempt to meet the needs of children with disabilities, the funding has never approached the 40 percent benchmark, forcing states to creatively supplement federal dollars. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between school funding formulas and identification of students with other health impairment (OHI). The relationship between special education funding formulas and per pupil spending (PPS) was also examined. Results indicated no formula was predictive for identification; however, PPS highly correlated to OHI identification rates. Better understanding of special education funding formulas and how they impact OHI diagnosis frequency and per pupil spending (PPS) is important for special education policymakers at the state and federal levels
