Near-threshold production of , and at a fixed-target experiment at the future ultra-high-energy proton colliders
We outline the opportunities to study the production of the Standard Model
bosons, , and at "low" energies at fixed-target experiments
based at possible future ultra-high-energy proton colliders, \ie\ the
High-Energy LHC, the Super proton-proton Collider and the Future Circular
Collider -- hadron-hadron. These can be indeed made in conjunction with the
proposed future colliders designed to reach up to TeV by using
bent crystals to extract part of the halo of the beam which would then impinge
on a fixed target. Without disturbing the collider operation, this technique
allows for the extraction of a substantial amount of particles in addition to
serve for a beam-cleaning purpose. With this method, high-luminosity
fixed-target studies at centre-of-mass energies above the , and
masses, GeV, are possible. We also discuss the
possibility offered by an internal gas target, which can also be used as
luminosity monitor by studying the beam transverse shape
Bremsstrahlung from relativistic heavy ions in a fixed target experiment at the LHC
We calculate the emission of bremsstrahlung from lead and argon ions in A
Fixed Target ExpeRiment (AFTER) that uses the LHC beams. With nuclear charges
of equal and respectively, these ions are accelerated to
energies of TeV. The bremsstrahlung peaks around
GeV and the spectrum exposes the nuclear structure of the incoming ion. The
peak structure is significantly different from the flat power spectrum
pertaining to a point charge. Photons are predominantly emitted within an angle
of to the direction of ion propagation. Our calculations are based
on the Weizs\"{a}cker-Williams method of virtual quanta with application of

Experimental investigation of the Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal effect in low-Z targets
In the CERN NA63 collaboration we have addressed the question of the
potential inadequacy of the commonly used Migdal formulation of the
Landau-Pomeranchuk-Migdal (LPM) effect by measuring the photon emission by 20
and 178 GeV electrons in the range 100 MeV - 4 GeV, in targets of
LowDensityPolyEthylene (LDPE), C, Al, Ti, Fe, Cu, Mo and, as a reference
target, Ta. For each target and energy, a comparison between simulated values
based on the LPM suppression of incoherent bremsstrahlung is shown, taking
multi-photon effects into account. For these targets and energies, we find that
Migdal's theoretical formulation is adequate to a precision of better than
about 5%, irrespective of the target substance.Comment: 8 pages, 13 figure
A Fixed-Target ExpeRiment at the LHC (AFTER@LHC) : luminosities, target polarisation and a selection of physics studies
We report on a future multi-purpose fixed-target experiment with the proton
or lead ion LHC beams extracted by a bent crystal. The multi-TeV LHC beams
allow for the most energetic fixed-target experiments ever performed. Such an
experiment, tentatively named AFTER for "A Fixed-Target ExperRiment", gives
access to new domains of particle and nuclear physics complementing that of
collider experiments, in particular at RHIC and at the EIC projects. The
instantaneous luminosity at AFTER using typical targets surpasses that of RHIC
by more than 3 orders of magnitude. Beam extraction by a bent crystal offers an
ideal way to obtain a clean and very collimated high-energy beam, without
decreasing the performance of the LHC. The fixed-target mode also has the
advantage of allowing for spin measurements with a polarised target and for an
access over the full backward rapidity domain up to xF ~ - 1. Here, we
elaborate on the reachable luminosities, the target polarisation and a

Strong suppression of nuclear-charge changing interactions for 18 TeV/ c In ions channeled through a bent Si crystal
Abstract We present experimental results giving evidence for the strong reduction—a factor of more than 20—of nuclear-charge changing interactions for 18 TeV In 49+ ions channeled through a silicon crystal bent to 7.5, 11.9 and 19.8 mrad. A very small fraction of the deflected ions suffer electromagnetic or nuclear interactions leading to proton loss while traversing the 60 mm long crystal, even though its thickness corresponds to about 0.13 nuclear interaction lengths for an amorphous material. By considering the deflected ions only, we show experimentally that the nuclear-charge pickup reaction believed to be induced by virtual photons is a short-range phenomenon
Experimental investigation of strong field trident production
We show by experiment that an electron impinging on an electric field that is of critical magnitude in its rest frame, may produce an electron-positron pair. Our measurements address higher-order QED, using the strong electric fields obtainable along particular crystallographic directions in single crystals. For the amorphous material our data are in good agreement with theory, whereas a discrepancy with theory on the magnitude of the trident enhancement is found in the precisely aligned case where the strong electric field acts
The influence of the dechanneling process on the photon emission by an ultra-relativistc positron channeling in a periodically bent crystal
We investigate, both analytically and numerically, the influence of the
dechanneling process on the parameters of undulator radiation generated by
ultra-relativistic positron channelling along a crystal plane, which is
periodically bent. The bending might be due either to the propagation of a
transverse acoustic wave through the crystal, or due to the static strain as it
occurs in superlattices. In either case the periodically bent crystal serves as
an undulator which allows to generate X-ray and gamma-radiation.
We propose the scheme for accurate quantitative treatment of the radiation in
presence of the dechanneling. The scheme includes (i) the analytic expression
for spectral-angular distribution which contains, as a parameter, the
dechanneling length, (ii) the simulation procedure of the dechanneling process
of a positron in periodically bent crystals. Using these we calculate the
dechanneling lengths of 5 GeV positrons channeling in Si, Ge and W crystals,
and the spectral-angular and spectral distributions of the undulator over broad
ranges of the photons. The calculations are performed for various parameters of

Coherent bremsstrahlung, boherent pair production, birefringence and polarimetry in the 20-170 GeV energy range using aligned crystals
The processes of coherent bremsstrahlung (CB) and coherent pair production
(CPP) based on aligned crystal targets have been studied in the energy range
20-170 GeV. The experimental arrangement allowed for measurements of single
photon properties of these phenomena including their polarization dependences.
This is significant as the theoretical description of CB and CPP is an area of
active theoretical debate and development. With the theoretical approach used
in this paper both the measured cross sections and polarization observables are
predicted very well. This indicates a proper understanding of CB and CPP up to
energies of 170 GeV. Birefringence in CPP on aligned crystals is applied to
determine the polarization parameters in our measurements. New technologies for
high energy photon beam optics including phase plates and polarimeters for
linear and circular polarization are demonstrated in this experiment. Coherent
bremsstrahlung for the strings-on-strings (SOS) orientation yields a larger
enhancement for hard photons than CB for the channeling orientations of the
crystal. Our measurements and our calculations indicate low photon
