This paper gives an overview of a robotic architecture meant for skillful manipulation. This
design is meant to close the gap between the high level layer (reasoning and planing layer) and the
object model system (physical control layer). This architecture proposes an interface layer that allows,
in a meaningful way, to connect atomic tasks with controller inputs. In this paper, we discuss how
specific complex tasks can be resolved by this system; we analyze the affordance unit design and, we
overview the future challenges in the implemenation of the whole system.

Force/Torque Sensor for Impedance control in the mobile platform of a humanoid robot
A 3D printed prototype of a 3 axis Force/Torque Sensor was designed and built, based on
the modification of a metallic plate that supports the undercarriage of the mobile platform of a
humanoid robot. The sensor is capable of bearing the weight of the robot and withstand external
forces without compromising its structural integrity. Deformation due to elasticity was measured with
strain gauges installed in the sensor, these measurements were used to qualitatively describe its
performance. Strain tests were conducted on the prototype and comparisons were made with FEM
simulation results, where an elastic behavior was confirmed. It was found during crosstalk tests with a
microcontroller and programming that axis separation can be achieved. Results showed that further
alterations to the geometry of the sensor must be made in order to improve its performance. The

Torque sensor geometry study on 3D simulated conditions for a Hollow robotic joint
The torque sensor is the component that gives a robotic joint the ability to be friendly to its
surroundings, since it allows a robotic arm to take action when capturing external disturbances while
performing any manipulation work in any type of environment. This quality is indispensable in
collaborative robots that work in poorly controlled work spaces. This paper presents the design of a
torque sensor for a hollow robot joint prototype that integrates liquid cooling in a BLDC actuator with
concentrated winding. It shows the type of simulation performed to identify the geometry that best
suits the needs of the proposed model based on the efforts that need to be captured when performing
manipulation tasks on a humanoid robotic arm. Next, the result of the simulations is shown and how
the boundary conditions and the geometric modification strategy are defined to refine the maximum
stress points.

Feasibility of combination allogeneic stem cell therapy for spinal cord injury: a case report
Cellular therapy for spinal cord injury (SCI) is overviewed focusing on bone marrow mononuclear cells, olfactory ensheathing cells, and mesenchymal stem cells. A case is made for the possibility of combining cell types, as well as for allogeneic use. We report the case of 29 year old male who suffered a crush fracture of the L1 vertebral body, lacking lower sensorimotor function, being a score A on the ASIA scale. Stem cell therapy comprised of intrathecal administration of allogeneic umbilical cord blood ex-vivo expanded CD34 and umbilical cord matrix MSC was performed 5 months, 8 months, and 14 months after injury. Cell administration was well tolerated with no adverse effects observed. Neuropathic pain subsided from intermittent 10/10 to once a week 3/10 VAS. Recovery of muscle, bowel and sexual function was noted, along with a decrease in ASIA score to "D". This case supports further investigation into allogeneic-based stem cell therapies for SCI
Glucocerebrosidase is imported into mitochondria and preserves complex I integrity and energy metabolism
Mutations in GBA1, the gene encoding the lysosomal enzyme β-glucocerebrosidase (GCase), which cause Gaucher's disease, are the most frequent genetic risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD). Here, we employ global proteomic and single-cell genomic approaches in stable cell lines as well as induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-derived neurons and midbrain organoids to dissect the mechanisms underlying GCase-related neurodegeneration. We demonstrate that GCase can be imported from the cytosol into the mitochondria via recognition of internal mitochondrial targeting sequence-like signals. In mitochondria, GCase promotes the maintenance of mitochondrial complex I (CI) integrity and function. Furthermore, GCase interacts with the mitochondrial quality control proteins HSP60 and LONP1. Disease-associated mutations impair CI stability and function and enhance the interaction with the mitochondrial quality control machinery. These findings reveal a mitochondrial role of GCase and suggest that defective CI activity and energy metabolism may drive the pathogenesis of GCase-linked neurodegeneration
Comparative Efficiency Study of Two Proposed Designs Tested in Water and Air Cooling Conditions for a High Power Humanoid Robot Hollow Joint
When a robot is designed, usually the weight of the same motors limits the maximum payload of the robot. While the designer tries to increase the power of the motors to give the robot better payload capacity, by doing so, it also makes the robot itself heavier and then the improvement in payload capacity is lost in lifting the robot itself. Many approaches to improve payload capacity consist in using an existing commercial electric motor and modifying it by adding external accessories to avoid non-safe motor internal heat. They usually use a mechanic reduction to increase payload capacity, but they lose maximum speed at the same time. Currently, there are no proper solutions for a motor in a humanoid robot application that manages to lift very heavy objects at high speed and that at the same time the motors are small and lightweight. In order to obtained more power from the robot joint actuator, in this paper we propose and compared a new thermal channel and thermal sealed jacket design for a permanent magnet electric motor to solve this problem. The design takes advantage of the fractional-slot concentrated-winding motor configuration and its fill factor to force liquid and air directly to the winding separately, in order to examine their head extradition to increase its performance in a specify scenario. The propose design shows an improvement in relation to the head extraction of the sealed jacket design with respect to the thermal channels when forcing liquid through them. Both designs are simulated assuming an extreme scenario where the winding reaches 100 °C for validation purposes. The experiments were carried out in the Ansys CFD Software to evaluate their heat transfer behavior.Universidad de Costa Rica/[]/UCR/Costa RicaUCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Unidades de Investigación::Ingeniería::Instituto Investigaciones en Ingeniería (INII)UCR::Vicerrectoría de Docencia::Ingeniería::Facultad de Ingeniería::Escuela de Ingeniería EléctricaUCR::Vicerrectoría de Investigación::Sistema de Estudios de Posgrado::Ingeniería::Maestría Académica en Ingeniería Eléctric
