Effects of Nitrogen and Potassium Fertilization on Nutrient Content and Quality Attributes of Sweet Cherry Fruits
Fertilizers are commonly applied to improve the yield and quality in orchards. But unbalanced fertilization negatively affects the nutrient contents of the fruits. Fruits with low energy and high mineral and vitamin contents are significant foods for human nutrition and human health. This study was carried out with ‘0900 Ziraat’ sweet cherry cultivar grafted on ‘Gisela 5’ rootstock in two consecutive years. The effects of different nitrogen (N) and Potassium (K) doses on nutrient content of fruits were investigated. Different doses of N (0, 50, 125 and 250 g N tree-1) and K (0, 50, 125 and 250 g K2O tree-1) were applied beneath the tree canopy in 6 replications and 1 tree in every replication in two consecutive years. Fruit samples were harvested from each tree and fruit colour, firmness, cracking index and nutrient contents (N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Zn and B) were determined. Fruit N content, N:K ratio, L*, a*, C* and firmness values increased with increasing N doses. While K fertilization did not have significant effects on K content and N:K ratio, it negatively influenced the N content of the fruits. It was concluded that N fertilization directly influenced fruit quality attributes, but K fertilization did not have any significant effects on fruit quality parameters
The role of oxidative stress and antioxidants in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration
OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of oxidant/antioxidant status and protein oxidation in the development of age-related macular degeneration. METHOD: The activities of serum superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase and the levels of serum malondialdehyde, advanced oxidation protein products, glutathione and vitamin C were measured in 25 patients with age-related macular degeneration and 25 control subjects without age-related macular degeneration. RESULT: The malondialdehyde and advanced oxidation protein product levels in the serum were significantly higher in the age-related macular degeneration patient group than in the control group (p<0.05). The superoxide dismutase activity in the serum was significantly lower in the age-related macular degeneration patient group than in the control group (p<0.05). The levels of vitamin C and glutathione and the activity of glutathione peroxidase in the serum were unchanged between groups (p>0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of the present study suggest that decreased effectiveness of the antioxidant defense system and increased oxidative stress may play a role in the pathogenesis of age-related macular degeneration
The comparison of risky and ambiguity decision making and cool executive functions between patients with obsessive compulsive disorder and healthy controls
Background: Executive functioning has been evaluated in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD). Cool and hot executive functioning discrimination provided a different way of conceptualising executive functions. Objectives: The aim of this study was to compare ambiguity and risky decision-making and cool executive functions in an OCD and a healthy control group. The relationship between decision-making and cool executive functioning was investigated. Methods: Sixty-two OCD patients and 48 healthy control participants were compared. Decision-making was measured using the Iowa Gambling Task. The cool executive functioning was assessed using the Stroop Test and the Wisconsin Card Sorting Task (WCST). Results: The OCD group completed the WCST and the Stroop Test statistically significantly with a lower score than that of the control group. The OCD group had impaired response inhibition and set-shifting that indicate impaired cool executive functioning. In contrast to a lack of a statistically significant difference, the risky decision-making performance was worse in the OCD group than in the healthy control group and in the unmedicated OCD patients than in the medicated OCD patients. Discussion: The OCD patients had a poorer performance in risky decision-making and cool executive functioning. There was a link between risky decision-making performance and impaired cool executive functions
Prognostic factors in diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma: effects of pretreatment clinical and laboratory characteristics
AbstractThe aim of this study was to investigate the effects of various pretreatment clinical and laboratory characteristics on the survival of patients with diffuse malignant pleural mesothelioma (DMPM). One hundred histopathologically confirmed DMPM patients were evaluated. Fifty-nine were treated with chemoimmunotherapy, while 41 who had refused chemoimmunotherapy received supportive therapy alone. The following pretreatment characteristics were evaluated in both univariate and multivariate Cox regression analyses: age, gender, Karnofsky performance score (KPS), histology, asbestos exposure, presence of chest pain, dyspnoea, weight loss, symptom duration, smoking history, disease location, platelet count, haemoglobin, white blood cell (WBC) count, serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and extent of disease (stage). Univariate analysis showed that patients with age ≥75 years, male gender, smoking history, advanced stages above stage I disease, KPS <70, WBC count ≥8450 and LDH level ≥500 IU l−1have a worse prognosis. With multivariate Cox regression analyses, age ≥75 years, advanced stages above stage I disease, KPS <70 and LDH level ≥500 IU l−1were found to be indicators of a poorer prognosis. In conclusion, in our study each of low performance status, older age, advanced stage disease, high LDH level and prognosis were found to be related
Interaction of atopy and smoking on respiratory effects of occupational dust exposure: a general population-based study
BACKGROUND: For individual exposures, effect modification by atopy or smoking has been reported on the occurrence of occupational airway disease. It is unclear if effect modification can be studied in a general population by an aggregated exposure measure. Assess relationship between airway obstruction and occupational exposure using a job-exposure-matrix (JEM) classifying jobs into 3 broad types of exposure, and test for effect modification by atopy, and smoking. METHODS: Data from 1,906 subjects were analyzed, all participants of the European Community Respiratory Health Survey. Job titles were categorized by an a priori constructed job exposure matrix into three classes of exposure to respectively organic dust, mineral dust, and gases/ fumes. Relationships were assessed for 'current wheeze', bronchial hyperresponsiveness (BHR), 'current asthma' (wheeze+BHR), and 'chronic bronchitis' (morning phlegm or morning cough), and lung function. RESULTS: Subjects with organic dust exposure in their work environment more frequently had 'current asthma' (OR 1.48, 95% C.I. 0.95;2.30), and a lower FEV(1 )(-59 mL, 95% C.I. -114;-4). The relationship was only present in asthmatic workers, and their risk was four-fold greater than in subjects with either atopy or exposure alone. Mineral dust exposure was associated with 'chronic bronchitis' (OR 2.22, 95% C.I. 1.16;4.23) and a lower FEV(1)/FVC ratio (-1.1%, 95% C.I. -1.8;-0.3). We observed an excess risk in smokers, greater than the separate effects of smoking or mineral dust exposure together. CONCLUSION: Occupational exposure to organic dust is associated with an increased risk of asthma, particularly in atopics. Chronic bronchitis occurs more frequently among individuals exposed to mineral dust, and smoking doubles this risk
Prevalence and determinants of asthma in adult male leather tannery workers in Karachi, Pakistan: A cross sectional study
BACKGROUND: This study aimed to estimate the prevalence and to identify some risk factors of adult asthma in male leather tannery workers in Karachi, Pakistan. METHODS: A cross sectional study was conducted from August 2003 to March 2004 on leather tannery workers of Karachi, Pakistan. Data were collected from 641 workers engaged in 95 different tanneries in Korangi industrial area selected as sample of convenience. Face to face interviews were performed using a structured pre-tested questionnaire by trained data collectors. RESULTS: Prevalence of adult asthma was 10.8% (69/641) in this study population. The prevalence of perceived work-related asthma was 5.3% (34/641). Multivariable logistic regression model showed that after taking into account the age effect, the leather tannery worker were more likely to be asthmatic, if they were illiterate (adjusted OR = 2.13, 95% CI: 1.17–3.88), of Pathan ethnicity (adjusted OR = 2.69; 95% CI: 1.35–5.36), ever-smoked (adjusted OR = 2.22, 95% CI: 1.16–4.26), reportedly never used gloves during different tanning tasks (OR = 3.28; 95% CI : 1.72–6.26). Also, the final model showed a significant interaction between perceived allergy and duration of work. Those who perceived to have allergy were more likely to have asthma if their duration of work was 8 years (adjusted OR = 2.26; 95% CI: 1.19 – 4.29) and this relationship was even stronger if duration was 13 years (adjusted OR = 3.67; 95% CI: 1.98–6.79). CONCLUSION: Prevalence of asthma in leather tannery workers appears to be high and is associated with educational status, ethnicity, smoking, glove use, perceived to have allergy and duration of work
Analysis of Writing Dispositions of Sixth Grade Students
WOS: 000345549500018The purpose of this study is to analyze writing dispositions of 6th grade students in terms of different variables. In this research structured in survey model, "Writing Disposition Scale" developed by Piazza and Siebert (2008) and adapted to Turkish by Iseri and Unal (2010) was used as the measurement tool. There are 21 articles in the 5 point likert type scale. Working group of the research consists of 436 students studying in a total of ten primary schools incentralSarkisla county of Sivas province. According to the findings obtained from the research, there is no significant difference between writing dispositions of students and their parents' level of education. However, it has been determined that writing dispositions of students differ significantly based on their gender, the number of books they read within the last month, and the status of diary keeping. Suggestions that would contribute to increasing students' writing dispositionshave been made according to the research findings
