The GERDA experiment: status and perspectives

    Get PDF
The GERDA experiment is located in the underground Gran Sasso laboratory. The experiment aims at studying the neutrinoless ββ decay of 76Ge. The implementation of the experiment is divided in two consecutive phases. Phase I will allow within one year of data taking to reach a sensitivity limit for the half life of the process of the order of 2.5 × 10 25 years. Phase II, with an increased amount of active material and a background index lower by one order of magnitude than in Phase I, will allow to reach a half life limit of about 1.5 × 10 26 years. In the present paper a brief review of the status of the experiment and its perspectives is given

Tilted axis rotation, candidates for chiral bands, and wobbling motion in 138Nd

    No full text
High-spin states in 138Nd were investigated using the reaction 94Zr(48Ca,4n), detecting coincident γ rays with the gasp spectrometer. A rich level scheme was constructed including four bands of negative parity at low spins, eight bands of dipole transitions, and eight bands of quadrupole transitions at medium spins. The cranked shell model and the tilted-axis cranking model are used to assign configurations to the observed bands, where zero pairing is assumed. For selected configurations the case of finite pairing is also considered. A consistent notation for configuration assignment that applies for both zero and finite pairing is introduced. The observed bands are interpreted as rotation around the short and long principal axes (quadrupole bands), as well as around a tilted axis (dipole bands). The dipole bands have an intermediate character, between magnetic and collective electric rotation. A pair of dipole bands is identified as candidates for chiral partners. The possible existence of the wobbling mode at low deformation and medium spins is discussed. The consistent interpretation of the multitude of observed bands strongly supports the existence of stable triaxial deformation at medium spins in 138Nd. ©2012 American Physical Societ

Exploring the performance of the spectrometer prisma in heavy zirconium and xenon mass regions

    Get PDF
We present results from two recent runs which illustrate the performance of the PRISMA spectrometer in the proximity of the upper limit of its operational interval, namely 96Zr + 124Sn at Elab = 500 MeV and 136Xe + 208Pb at Elab = 930 MeV. In the latter run, the γ array CLARA also allowed us to identify previously unknown γ transitions in the nuclides 136Cs and 134I

Fusion of 28Si + 28Si: oscillations above the barrier and the behavior down to 1μb

    Get PDF
Fusion excitation functions of light heavy-ion systems show oscillatory structures above the Coulomb barrier, caused by resonances or due to the penetration of successive centrifugal barriers well separated in energy. In heavier systems, the amplitude of oscillations decreases and the peaks get nearer to each other. This makes the measurements very challenging. We have performed a first experiment for 28Si + 28Si, by measuring fusion cross sections (σ) in an energy range of ≃15 MeV above the barrier, with a small ΔElab = 0.5 MeV step. Three regular oscillations are clearly observed, which are best revealed by plotting the energy-weighted derivative of the excitation function. The excitation function has been recently measured down to cross sections ≤1μb with larger energy steps. Coupled-channel (CC) calculations based on a shallow potential in the entrance channel are able to reproduce the oscillations. A further analysis will provide a stringent test for the calculations, in particular for the choice of the ion-ion potential, because the subbarrier excitation function has to be reproduced as well. (n,γ) reactions on rare Ca isotopes: Valence-hole - Coreexcitation couplings in47Ca

Recent results on the structure of 47Ca will be presented. The nucleus of interest was populated via the cold-neutron capture 46Ca(n,\u3b3) reaction, on a rare 46Ca target, during the EXILL experimental campaign at the nuclear reactor of Institut Laue- Langevin in Grenoble. High-resolution \u3b3-ray spectroscopy, performed with a composite array of HPGe detectors, enabled the identification of new transitions deexciting states between the neutron-capture level and the ground state. Experimental data will be compared with a novel microscopic theoretical model, currently under development, specifically designed to describe the low-lying structure of odd-mass nuclei with one valence particle/hole outside a spherical doubly-magic core, using the Skyrme effective interaction self-consistently

Search for particle–vibration coupling in 65Cu

The lifetime of the 9/2 + state of 65 Cu, at 2534 keV, has been measured by fast timing techniques, in order to establish wether such state arises from a weak coupling between a p3=2 proton and the 3 octupole vibration at 3.56 MeV in the 64 Ni core. The 65 Cu nucleus was populated by the reaction 7 Li + 64 Ni at 32 MeV, at the Horia Hu- lubei National Institute of Physics and Nuclear Engineering (NIPNE) in Bucharest, and its -decay was detected by the ROSPHERE array. The measured lifetime coresponds to a B(E3) reduced transition probability to the ground state equal to 8.89 W.u., in agreement with theoretical predictions in the weak coupling limit

Hindered E4 decay of the 12+ yrast trap in 52Fe

Abstract The γ decay of the 12 + yrast trap in 52Fe has been measured for the first time. The two E4 γ-branches to the 8 + states are hindered with respect to other B ( E 4 ) reduced transition probabilities measured in the f 7 / 2 shell. The interpretation of the data is given in the full pf shell model framework, comparing the results obtained with different residual interactions. It is shown that measurements of hexadecapole transition probabilities constitute a powerful tool in discriminating the correct configuration of the involved wavefunctions

Transfer probability measurements in the superfluid 116Sn+60Ni system

We measured excitation functions for the main transfer channels in the 116 Sn+ 60 Ni reaction from above to well below the Coulomb barrier. The experiment has been performed in inverse kinematics, detecting the lighter (target-like) ions with the magnetic spectrometer PRISMA at very forward angles. The comparison between the data and microscopic calculations for the present case and for the previously measured 96 Zr+ 40 Ca system, namely superfluid and near closed shells nuclei, should significantly improve our understanding of nucleon-nucleon correlation properties in multinucleon transfer processes
