Quantum memory for squeezed light
We produce a 600-ns pulse of 1.86-dB squeezed vacuum at 795 nm in an optical
parametric amplifier and store it in a rubidium vapor cell for 1 us using
electromagnetically induced transparency. The recovered pulse, analyzed using
time-domain homodyne tomography, exhibits up to 0.21+-0.04 dB of squeezing. We
identify the factors leading to the degradation of squeezing and investigate
the phase evolution of the atomic coherence during the storage interval.Comment: To appear in PRL. Changes to version 3: we present a larger data set
featuring somewhat less squeezing, but also better statistics and a lower
margin of error. Some additional revisions are made in response to the
referees' comment
Production and decay of the neutral top-pion in high energy colliders
We study the production and decay of the neutral top-pion
predicted by topcolor-assisted technicolor(TC2) theory. Our results show that,
except the dominant decay modes , and , the
can also decay into and modes. It can
be significantly produced at high energy collider(LC) experiments
via the processes and . We further calculate the production cross sections of the
processes and . We find that the signatures of the neutral top-pion
can be detected via these processes.Comment: Latex file, 13 Pages, 6 eps figures. to be published in Phys.Rev.
Flavor changing single top quark production channels at e^+e^- colliders in the effective Lagrangian description
We perform a global analysis of the sensitivity of LEP2 and e^+e^- colliders
with a c.m. energy in the range 500 - 2000 GeV to new flavor-changing single
top quark production in the effective Lagrangian approach. The processes
considered are sensitive to new flavor-changing effective vertices such as Ztc,
htc, four-Fermi tcee contact terms as well as a right-handed Wtb coupling. We
show that e^+ e^- colliders are most sensitive to the physics responsible for
the contact tcee vertices. For example, it is found that the recent data from
the 189 GeV LEP2 run can be used to rule out any new flavor physics that can
generate these four-Fermi operators up to energy scales of \Lambda > 0.7 - 1.4
TeV, depending on the type of the four-Fermi interaction. We also show that a
corresponding limit of \Lambda > 1.3 - 2.5 and \Lambda > 17 - 27 TeV can be
reached at the future 200 GeV LEP2 run and a 1000 GeV e^+e^- collider,
respectively. We note that these limits are much stronger than the typical
limits which can be placed on flavor diagonal four-Fermi couplings. Similar
results hold for \mu^+\mu^- colliders and for tu(bar) associated production.
Finally we briefly comment on the necessity of measuring all flavor-changing
effective vertices as they can be produced by different types of heavy physics.Comment: 34 pages, plain latex, 7 figures embadded in the text using epsfig.

On the distortion of twin building lattices
We show that twin building lattices are undistorted in their ambient group;
equivalently, the orbit map of the lattice to the product of the associated
twin buildings is a quasi-isometric embedding. As a consequence, we provide an
estimate of the quasi-flat rank of these lattices, which implies that there are
infinitely many quasi-isometry classes of finitely presented simple groups. In
an appendix, we describe how non-distortion of lattices is related to the
integrability of the structural cocycle
Isometric group actions on Banach spaces and representations vanishing at infinity
Our main result is that the simple Lie group acts properly
isometrically on if . To prove this, we introduce property
({\BP}_0^V), for be a Banach space: a locally compact group has
property ({\BP}_0^V) if every affine isometric action of on , such
that the linear part is a -representation of , either has a fixed point
or is metrically proper. We prove that solvable groups, connected Lie groups,
and linear algebraic groups over a local field of characteristic zero, have
property ({\BP}_0^V). As a consequence for unitary representations, we
characterize those groups in the latter classes for which the first cohomology
with respect to the left regular representation on is non-zero; and we
characterize uniform lattices in those groups for which the first -Betti
number is non-zero.Comment: 28 page
Mathematical Properties of a New Levin-Type Sequence Transformation Introduced by \v{C}\'{\i}\v{z}ek, Zamastil, and Sk\'{a}la. I. Algebraic Theory
\v{C}\'{\i}\v{z}ek, Zamastil, and Sk\'{a}la [J. Math. Phys. \textbf{44}, 962
- 968 (2003)] introduced in connection with the summation of the divergent
perturbation expansion of the hydrogen atom in an external magnetic field a new
sequence transformation which uses as input data not only the elements of a
sequence of partial sums, but also explicit estimates
for the truncation errors. The explicit
incorporation of the information contained in the truncation error estimates
makes this and related transformations potentially much more powerful than for
instance Pad\'{e} approximants. Special cases of the new transformation are
sequence transformations introduced by Levin [Int. J. Comput. Math. B
\textbf{3}, 371 - 388 (1973)] and Weniger [Comput. Phys. Rep. \textbf{10}, 189
- 371 (1989), Sections 7 -9; Numer. Algor. \textbf{3}, 477 - 486 (1992)] and
also a variant of Richardson extrapolation [Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc. London A
\textbf{226}, 299 - 349 (1927)]. The algebraic theory of these transformations
- explicit expressions, recurrence formulas, explicit expressions in the case
of special remainder estimates, and asymptotic order estimates satisfied by
rational approximants to power series - is formulated in terms of hitherto
unknown mathematical properties of the new transformation introduced by
\v{C}\'{\i}\v{z}ek, Zamastil, and Sk\'{a}la. This leads to a considerable
formal simplification and unification.Comment: 41 + ii pages, LaTeX2e, 0 figures. Submitted to Journal of

Delayed self-recognition in children with autism spectrum disorder.
This study aimed to investigate temporally extended self-awareness (awareness of one’s place in and continued existence through time) in autism spectrum disorder (ASD), using the delayed self-recognition (DSR) paradigm (Povinelli et al., Child Development 67:1540–1554, 1996). Relative to age and verbal ability matched comparison children, children with ASD showed unattenuated performance on the DSR task, despite showing significant impairments in theory-of-mind task performance, and a reduced propensity to use personal pronouns to refer to themselves. The results may indicate intact temporally extended self-awareness in ASD. However, it may be that the DSR task is not an unambiguous measure of temporally extended self-awareness and it can be passed through strategies which do not require the possession of a temporally extended self-concept
Top-Charm Associated Production in High Energy Collisions
The possibility of exploring the flavor changing neutral current
couplings in the production vertex for the reaction \epem\to
t\bar c + \bar tc is examined. Using a model independent parameterization for
the effective Lagrangian to describe the most general three-point interactions,
production cross sections are found to be relatively small at LEP II, but
potentially sizeable at higher energy \epem colliders. The kinematic
characteristics of the signal are studied and a set of cuts are devised for
clean separation of the signal from background. The resulting sensitivity to
anomalous flavor changing couplings at LEP II with an integrated luminosity of
pb is found to be comparable to their present indirect
constraints from loop processes, while at higher energy colliders with
TeV center-of-mass energy and 50-200 fb luminosity, one expects to reach
a sensitivity at or below the percentage level.Comment: Latex, 22 page
Calculating the energy spectra of magnetic molecules: application of real- and spin-space symmetries
The determination of the energy spectra of small spin systems as for instance
given by magnetic molecules is a demanding numerical problem. In this work we
review numerical approaches to diagonalize the Heisenberg Hamiltonian that
employ symmetries; in particular we focus on the spin-rotational symmetry SU(2)
in combination with point-group symmetries. With these methods one is able to
block-diagonalize the Hamiltonian and thus to treat spin systems of
unprecedented size. In addition it provides a spectroscopic labeling by
irreducible representations that is helpful when interpreting transitions
induced by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR), Nuclear Magnetic Resonance
(NMR) or Inelastic Neutron Scattering (INS). It is our aim to provide the
reader with detailed knowledge on how to set up such a diagonalization scheme.Comment: 29 pages, many figure
High Energy FCNC search through Colliders
We study the potential impacts of a new type of particle collider -- an
collider -- on the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model. As
our first attempt for exploring its physics potential, we demonstrate that the
the collision experiment can be highly efficient in searching for
lepton-number-violating Flavor Changing Neutral Current phenomena.Comment: 11 pages, including 2 e-postscript figures, title & abstract are
