    Quasiparticle Corrections to the Electronic Properties of Anion Vacancies at GaAs(110) and InP(110)

    We propose a new method for calculating optical defect levels and thermodynamic charge-transition levels of point defects in semiconductors, which includes quasiparticle corrections to the Kohn-Sham eigenvalues of density-functional theory. Its applicability is demonstrated for anion vacancies at the (110) surfaces of III-V semiconductors. We find the (+/0) charge-transition level to be 0.49 eV above the surface valence-band maximum for GaAs(110) and 0.82 eV for InP(110). The results show a clear improvement over the local-density approximation and agree closely with an experimental analysis.Comment: 4 pages including 1 figure, RevTe

    Electronic and magnetic properties of substitutional Mn clusters in (Ga,Mn)As

    The magnetization and hole distribution of Mn clusters in (Ga,Mn)As are investigated by all-electron total energy calculations using the projector augmented wave method within the density-functional formalism. It is found that the energetically most favorable clusters consist of Mn atoms surrounding one center As atom. As the Mn cluster grows the hole band at the Fermi level splits increasingly and the hole distribution gets increasingly localized at the center As atom. The hole distribution at large distances from the cluster does not depend significantly on the cluster size. As a consequence, the spin-flip energy differences of distant clusters are essentially independent of the cluster size. The Curie temperature TCT_C is estimated directly from these spin-flip energies in the mean field approximation. When clusters are present estimated TCT_C values are around 250 K independent of Mn concentration whereas for a uniform Mn distribution we estimate a TCT_C of about 600 K.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables; Revised manuscript 26.     Symmetric Versus Nonsymmetric Structure of the Phosphorus Vacancy on InP(110)

    The atomic and electronic structure of positively charged P vacancies on InP(110) surfaces is determined by combining scanning tunneling microscopy, photoelectron spectroscopy, and density-functional theory calculations. The vacancy exhibits a nonsymmetric rebonded atomic configuration with a charge transfer level 0.75+-0.1 eV above the valence band maximum. The scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) images show only a time average of two degenerate geometries, due to a thermal flip motion between the mirror configurations.     Kann das Thema E-Commerce nicht ad acta gelegt werden, nachdem der Hype um die New Economy abgeklungen ist? Dieser Band zeigt, daß E-Commerce nichts von seiner enormen Bedeutung für die Modernisierung von Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft verloren hat und nach wie vor eine wichtige Herausforderung auch für die Politik darstellt. In vielen Bereichen ist der elektronische Handel bereits fest etabliert, und die dadurch mittel- und längerfristig ausgelösten Strukturveränderungen müssen bewältigt werden. Aber die Bedingungen für den elektronischen Handel unterscheiden sich grundlegend je nach Branche, Gütern, Akteuren und den ökonomischen und politischen Rahmenbedingungen. Dieser Erkenntnis folgend wurden acht Wirtschaftsbereiche für eine nähere Analyse ausgewählt, nämlich der Handel mit Lebensmitteln, Automobilen, Arzneimitteln, Medienprodukten (Buch, Tonträger, Video), Strom, Wertpapieren und Dienstleistungen sowie die Beschaffungsprozesse im öffentlichen Bereich. Ergänzt werden diese Detailuntersuchungen um Abschätzungen zu den Folgen des E-Commerce (z.B. Arbeitsmarkteffekte, verkehrliche und ökologische Folgen). Außerdem werden Handlungsfelder für Forschung und Politik benannt, die sich insbesondere an den Auftraggeber dieser Studie, den Deutschen Bundestag, richten

    TOM40 Mediates Mitochondrial Dysfunction Induced by α-Synuclein Accumulation in Parkinson's Disease.

    Alpha-synuclein (α-Syn) accumulation/aggregation and mitochondrial dysfunction play prominent roles in the pathology of Parkinson's disease. We have previously shown that postmortem human dopaminergic neurons from PD brains accumulate high levels of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) deletions. We now addressed the question, whether alterations in a component of the mitochondrial import machinery -TOM40- might contribute to the mitochondrial dysfunction and damage in PD. For this purpose, we studied levels of TOM40, mtDNA deletions, oxidative damage, energy production, and complexes of the respiratory chain in brain homogenates as well as in single neurons, using laser-capture-microdissection in transgenic mice overexpressing human wildtype α-Syn. Additionally, we used lentivirus-mediated stereotactic delivery of a component of this import machinery into mouse brain as a novel therapeutic strategy. We report here that TOM40 is significantly reduced in the brain of PD patients and in α-Syn transgenic mice. TOM40 deficits were associated with increased mtDNA deletions and oxidative DNA damage, and with decreased energy production and altered levels of complex I proteins in α-Syn transgenic mice. Lentiviral-mediated overexpression of Tom40 in α-Syn-transgenic mice brains ameliorated energy deficits as well as oxidative burden. Our results suggest that alterations in the mitochondrial protein transport machinery might contribute to mitochondrial impairment in α-Synucleinopathies

    Optical control of 4f orbital state in rare-earth metals

    Information technology demands continuous increase of data-storage density. In high-density magnetic recording media, the large magneto-crystalline anisotropy (MCA) stabilizes the stored information against decay through thermal fluctuations. In the latest generation storage media, MCA is so large that magnetic order needs to be transiently destroyed by heat to enable bit writing. Here we show an alternative approach to control high-anisotropy magnets: With ultrashort laser pulses the anisotropy itself can be manipulated via electronic state excitations. In rare-earth materials like terbium metal, magnetic moment and high MCA both originate from the 4f electronic state. Following infrared laser excitation 5d-4f electron-electron scattering processes lead to selective orbital excitations that change the 4f orbital occupation and significantly alter the MCA. Besides these excitations within the 4f multiplet, 5d-4f electron transfer causes a transient change of the 4f occupation number, which, too, strongly alters the MCA. Such MCA change cannot be achieved by heating: The material would rather be damaged than the 4f configuration modified. Our results show a way to overcome this limitation for a new type of efficient magnetic storage medium. Besides potential technological relevance, the observation of MCA-changing excitations also has implications for a general understanding of magnetic dynamics processes on ultrashort time scales, where the 4f electronic state affects the angular momentum transfer between spin system and lattice.Comment: Manuscript (14 pages, 3 figures) and Supplementary Information (22 pages, 9 figures

    Further investigation of confirmed urinary tract infection (UTI) in children under five years: a systematic review.

    Background: Further investigation of confirmed UTI in children aims to prevent renal scarring and future complications. Methods: We conducted a systematic review to determine the most effective approach to the further investigation of confirmed urinary tract infection (UTI) in children under five years of age. Results: 73 studies were included. Many studies had methodological limitations or were poorly reported. Effectiveness of further investigations: One study found that routine imaging did not lead to a reduction in recurrent UTIs or renal scarring. Diagnostic accuracy: The studies do not support the use of less invasive tests such as ultrasound as an alternative to renal scintigraphy, either to rule out infection of the upper urinary tract (LR- = 0.57, 95%CI: 0.47, 0.68) and thus to exclude patients from further investigation or to detect renal scarring (LR+ = 3.5, 95% CI: 2.5, 4.8). None of the tests investigated can accurately predict the development of renal scarring. The available evidence supports the consideration of contrast-enhanced ultrasound techniques for detecting vesico-ureteric reflux (VUR), as an alternative to micturating cystourethrography (MCUG) (LR+ = 14.1, 95% CI: 9.5, 20.8; LR- = 0.20, 95%CI: 0.13, 0.29); these techniques have the advantage of not requiring exposure to ionising radiation. Conclusion: There is no evidence to support the clinical effectiveness of routine investigation of children with confirmed UTI. Primary research on the effectiveness, in terms of improved patient outcome, of testing at all stages in the investigation of confirmed urinary tract infection is urgently required

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Idiopathic congenital talipes equinovarus (ICTEV) is a congenital limb deformity. Based on extended transmission disequilibrium testing, <it>Gli-Kruppel family member 3 </it>(<it>Gli3</it>) has been identified as a candidate gene for ICTEV. Here, we verify the role of <it>Gli3 </it>in ICTEV development.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Using the rat ICTEV model, we analyzed the differences in <it>Gli3 </it>expression levels between model rats and normal control rats. We used luciferase reporter gene assays and ChIP/EMSA assays to analyze the regulatory elements of <it>Gli3</it>.</p> <p>Results</p> <p><it>Gli3 </it>showed higher expression levels in ICTEV model rats compared to controls (P < 0.05). We identified repressor and activator regions in the rat <it>Gli3 </it>promoter. The <it>Gli3 </it>promoter also contains two putative Hoxd13 binding sites. Using EMSA, the Hoxd13 binding site 2 was found to directly interact with Hoxd13 <it>in vitro</it>. ChIP assays of the Hoxd13-<it>Gli3 </it>promoter complex from a developing limb confirmed that endogenous Hoxd13 interacts with this region <it>in vivo</it>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our findings suggest that <it>HoxD13 </it>directly interacts with the promoter of <it>Gli3</it>. The increase of <it>Gli3 </it>expression in ICTEV model animal might result from the low expression of <it>HoxD13</it>.</p

    How does study quality affect the results of a diagnostic meta-analysis?

    Background: The use of systematic literature review to inform evidence based practice in diagnostics is rapidly expanding. Although the primary diagnostic literature is extensive, studies are often of low methodological quality or poorly reported. There has been no rigorously evaluated, evidence based tool to assess the methodological quality of diagnostic studies. The primary objective of this study was to determine the extent to which variations in the quality of primary studies impact the results of a diagnostic meta-analysis and whether this differs with diagnostic test type. A secondary objective was to contribute to the evaluation of QUADAS, an evidence-based tool for the assessment of quality in diagnostic accuracy studies. Methods: This study was conducted as part of large systematic review of tests used in the diagnosis and further investigation of urinary tract infection (UTI) in children. All studies included in this review were assessed using QUADAS, an evidence-based tool for the assessment of quality in systematic reviews of diagnostic accuracy studies. The impact of individual components of QUADAS on a summary measure of diagnostic accuracy was investigated using regression analysis. The review divided the diagnosis and further investigation of UTI into the following three clinical stages: diagnosis of UTI, localisation of infection, and further investigation of the UTI. Each stage used different types of diagnostic test, which were considered to involve different quality concerns. Results: Many of the studies included in our review were poorly reported. The proportion of QUADAS items fulfilled was similar for studies in different sections of the review. However, as might be expected, the individual items fulfilled differed between the three clinical stages. Regression analysis found that different items showed a strong association with test performance for the different tests evaluated. These differences were observed both within and between the three clinical stages assessed by the review. The results of regression analyses were also affected by whether or not a weighting (by sample size) was applied. Our analysis was severely limited by the completeness of reporting and the differences between the index tests evaluated and the reference standards used to confirm diagnoses in the primary studies. Few tests were evaluated by sufficient studies to allow meaningful use of meta-analytic pooling and investigation of heterogeneity. This meant that further analysis to investigate heterogeneity could only be undertaken using a subset of studies, and that the findings are open to various interpretations. Conclusion: Further work is needed to investigate the influence of methodological quality on the results of diagnostic meta-analyses. Large data sets of well-reported primary studies are needed to address this question. Without significant improvements in the completeness of reporting of primary studies, progress in this area will be limited
