    Distribution and Excretion of TEGDMA in Guinea Pigs and Mice

    The monomer triethyleneglycoldimethacrylate (TEGDMA) is used as a diluent in many resin-based dental materials. It was previously shown in vitro that TEGDMA was released into the adjacent biophase from such materials during the first days after placement. In this study, the uptake, distribution, and excretion of 14C-TEGDMA applied via gastric, intradermal, and intravenous administration at dose levels well above those encountered in dental care were examined in vivo in guinea pigs and mice as a test of the hypothesis that TEGDMA reaches cytotoxic levels in mammalian tissues. 14C-TEGDMA was taken up rapidly from the stomach and small intestine after gastric administration in both species and was widely distributed in the body following administration by each route. Most 14C was excreted within one day as 14 CO2. The peak equivalent TEGDMA levels in all mouse and guinea pig tissues examined were at least 1000-fold less than known toxic levels.     Preoperative predictors for residual tumor after surgery in patients with ovarian carcinoma

    Objectives: Suboptimal debulking (>1 cm residual tumor) results in poor survival rates for patients with an advanced stage of ovarian cancer. The purpose of this study was to develop a prediction model, based on simple preoperative parameters, for patients with an advanced stage of ovarian cancer who are at risk of suboptimal cytoreduction despite maximal surgical effort. Methods: Retrospective analysis of 187 consecutive patients with a suspected clinical diagnosis of advanced-stage ovarian cancer undergoing upfront debulking between January 1998 and December 2003. Preoperative parameters were Karnofsky performance status, ascites and serum concentrations of CA 125, hemoglobin, albumin, LDH and blood platelets. The main outcome parameter was residual tumor >1 cm. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression was employed for testing possible prediction models. A clinically applicable graphic model (nomogram) for this prediction was to be developed. Results: Serum concentrations of CA 125 and blood platelets in the group with residual tumor >1 cm were higher in comparison to the optimally cytoreduced group (p 1 cm based on serum levels of CA 125 and albumin was established. Conclusion: Postoperative residual tumor despite maximal surgical effort can be predicted by preoperative CA 125 and serum albumin levels. With a nomogram based on these two parameters, probability of postoperative residual tumor in each individual patient can be predicted.     Improved functionalization of oleic acid-coated iron oxide nanoparticles for biomedical applications

    Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles can providemultiple benefits for biomedical applications in aqueous environments such asmagnetic separation or magnetic resonance imaging. To increase the colloidal stability and allow subsequent reactions, the introduction of hydrophilic functional groups onto the particles’ surface is essential. During this process, the original coating is exchanged by preferably covalently bonded ligands such as trialkoxysilanes. The duration of the silane exchange reaction, which commonly takes more than 24 h, is an important drawback for this approach. In this paper, we present a novel method, which introduces ultrasonication as an energy source to dramatically accelerate this process, resulting in high-quality waterdispersible nanoparticles around 10 nmin size. To prove the generic character, different functional groups were introduced on the surface including polyethylene glycol chains, carboxylic acid, amine, and thiol groups.     2-s2.0-85104077456Ketone bodies (acetoacetate, beta-hydroxybutyrate (?HB), acetone) are generated as a result of fatty acid oxidation in the liver and exist at low concentrations in urine and blood. Elevated concentrations can indicate health problems such as diabetes, childhood hypoglycemia, alcohol, or salicylate poisoning. Development of portable and cost-effective bedside point-of-care (POC) tests to detect such compounds can help to reduce the risk of disease progression. In this study, ?HB was chosen as a model molecule for developing an optical sensor–integrated microplatform. Prior to sensor optimization, ?HB levels were measured at a concentration range of 0.02 and 0.1 mM spectrophotometrically, which is far below the reported elevated ranges of 1–2 mM and resulting absorbance changes were converted into an Arduino microcontroller code for the correlation. Measurements performed with the designed integrated microplatform were found significant. Integrated microplatform was verified with the benchtop spectrophotometer. Measurements between 0.02 and 0.1 mM substrate concentration were found highly sensitive with “y = 0.7347x + 0.00184” with R2 value of 0.9796, and the limit of detection was determined as 0.02 mM.     The aim of this study is to investigate the effects of ascites, ovarian mass volume, and peritoneal carcinomatosis on serum CA125 levels in patients with nonmucinous epithelial ovarian carcinoma. Serum CA125 levels were determined by a commercial enzyme immunoassay kit in a series of 98 patients with stage I-IV nonmucinous epithelial ovarian carcinoma. Amounts of ascites were determined in each patient with ascites. Ovarian mass volumes were calculated in 22 patients with stage I disease without ascites. Peritoneal carcinomatosis was detected in 35 ovarian cancer patients. Serum CA125 levels were compared among the patients with different clinical conditions
