Soliton localization in Bose-Einstein condensates with time-dependent harmonic potential and scattering length

We derive exact solitonic solutions of a class of Gross-Pitaevskii equations with time-dependent harmonic trapping potential and interatomic interaction. We find families of exact single-solitonic, multi-solitonic, and solitary wave solutions. We show that, with the special case of an oscillating trapping potential and interatomic interaction, a soliton can be localized indefinitely at an arbitrary position. The localization is shown to be experimentally possible for sufficiently long time even with only an oscillating trapping potential and a constant interatomic interaction.Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, accepted for publication in J.Phys.

Representations of the discrete inhomogeneous Lorentz group and Dirac wave equation on the lattice

We propose the fundamental and two dimensional representation of the Lorentz groups on a (3+1)-dimensional hypercubic lattice, from which representations of higher dimensions can be constructed. For the unitary representation of the discrete translation group we use the kernel of the Fourier transform. From the Dirac representation of the Lorentz group (including reflections) we derive in a natural way the wave equation on the lattice for spin 1/2 particles. Finally the induced representation of the discrete inhomogeneous Lorentz group is constructed by standard methods and its connection with the continuous case is discussed.Comment: LaTeX, 20 pages, 1 eps figure, uses iopconf.sty (late submission

This article argues that the laws for promotion of the national languages are a legitimate means for the Baltic states to establish their cultural independence from Russia and the former Soviet Union

Ultra-High Energy Neutrino Fluxes: New Constraints and Implications

We apply new upper limits on neutrino fluxes and the diffuse extragalactic component of the GeV gamma-ray flux to various scenarios for ultra high energy cosmic rays and neutrinos. As a result we find that extra-galactic top-down sources can not contribute significantly to the observed flux of highest energy cosmic rays. The Z-burst mechanism where ultra-high energy neutrinos produce cosmic rays via interactions with relic neutrinos is practically ruled out if cosmological limits on neutrino mass and clustering apply.Comment: 10 revtex pages, 9 postscript figure

Enhanced electrical resistivity before N\'eel order in the metals, RCuAs2_2 (R= Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy

We report an unusual temperature (T) dependent electrical resistivity(ρ\rho) behavior in a class of ternary intermetallic compounds of the type RCuAs2_2 (R= Rare-earths). For some rare-earths (Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy) with negligible 4f-hybridization, there is a pronounced minimum in ρ\rho(T) far above respective N\'eel temperatures (TN_N). However, for the rare-earths which are more prone to exhibit such a ρ\rho(T) minimum due to 4f-covalent mixing and the Kondo effect, this minimum is depressed. These findings, difficult to explain within the hither-to-known concepts, present an interesting scenario in magnetism.Comment: Physical Review Letters (accepted for publication
