    Spatio-temporal trends of typhoid fever among youths attending Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital in Kano Metropolis, Nigeria

    Typhoid fever continues to be significant causes of illness and death particularly among children and adolescents in developing countries as a result of poor sanitation and unsafe food and water supply especially where the water is contaminated by human feces. This study analysed the spatial and temporal trends of typhoid fever in Kano metropolis between 2010-2014. Hospital records for youths attending Muhammad Abdullahi Wase Specialist Hospital (MAWSH) were used. Coordinate of wards in the metropolis was also generated and imported into Arc GIS environment. G-Statistics was used to determine the distribution and cluster of typhoid prevalence. The results showed an upward trend with increase in age. It also showed a downward trend from 2010 to 2014, indicating that people are becoming aware of the disease and the predisposing factors. The findings also revealed higher prevalence among the males. The results of the G- Statistics showed higher prevalence in the northern part of the metropolis, with hot spots in Dakata and Tarauni wards. The study recommends frequent vaccination and good eating and drinking habits as well as good hygienic practices at home and outside home as remedies for addressing the problem.Keywords: Typhoid Fever, Spatial, Temporal, Youths, G-statistics, Kan

    Ibn al-Haytham (w. 1038/9 M) lebih dikenal sebagai seorang saintis dan ahli matematika hingga saat ini. Kajian ini bertujuan untuk meninjau kembali posisinya diantara sarjana muslim melalui penyelidikan dan peninjauan lebih seksama terhadap sumber-sumber riwayat hidupnya dan karya-karyanya, untuk memperoleh gambaran yang lebih sesuai. Kaidah yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kaidah sejarah khususnya penyelidikan bio-bibliografi. Hasilnya, meskipun Ibn al-Haytham merupakan tokoh yang menonjol dalam sains dan matematika, tetapi sebenarnya Ibn al-Haytham merupakan seorang filsuf muslim yang menghasilkan karya dalam spektrum bidang keilmuan beragam. Satu-satunya karya yang banyak membahas segi filsafat ternyata masih dapat diperoleh saat ini yaitu Kitāb Thamarah al-Ḥikmah, yang memperkuat bukti bahwa ia bukan saja seorang saintis dan ahli matematika tetapi juga seorang filsuf muslim

    Stress induced hyperglycemia in stroke patients

    Background: Stroke is the third most common cause of death in developed countries and second most common cause of death worldwide. High proportion of patients may develop hyperglycemia after an acute stress such as stroke or myocardial infarction even in the absence of preexisting diagnosis of diabetes mellitus. Prolonged stress hyperglycemia in ischemic stroke increases the risk of in-hospital 28- day mortality, especially in non-diabetic patients. Aims and objectives:To determine the frequency of stress-induced hyperglycemia in non-diabetic patients with ischemic or hemorrhagic stroke. Subjects and methods: A total of 255 patients admitted with acute stroke, fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included in the study. After informed consent capillary blood glucose was monitored at the time of admission and after every 8-hour for three days. Glycosylated hemoglobin (hba1c) was measured simultaneously. Results: Hyperglycemia was noted in 67 (26.32%) patients. Out of which 50 (74.6%) presented with ischemic stroke while only 17 (25.4%) were associated with hemorrhagic stroke. Undiagnosed diabetes was found in 10% cases. Conclusion: Stress related hyperglycemia after acute stroke was found in 26% of patients especially those with high BMI, visceral obesity and positive family history for diabetes

    An Insight into the Application of Gradations of Circularity in the Food Packaging Industry: A Systematic Literature Review and a Multiple Case Study

Given the academic significance attributed to the gradations of circularity in maximising resource efficiency in the food packaging industry, this paper aims to identify the current state of the application of those gradations of circularity in the FPI by finding the least and most commonly used circular strategies in the FPI. Moreover, it aims to identify the drivers of and barriers to the implementation of the gradations of circularity and the levers for overcoming such barriers through SLR using multiple case studies, namely five small-medium enterprises (SMEs) in the FPI that each represent one of the five least implemented circular strategies. The research identified that the efforts of the FPI toward adopting circular strategies were not aligned with the gradations of circularity. Based on the research findings, a lever–barrier matrix is proposed as a toolkit for SMEs planning a transition toward the circular economy or are in the transition phase

    Calpastatin (CAST) gene polymorphism in Kajli, Lohi and Thalli sheep breeds

    Calpastatin-encoding gene (<i>CAST</i>) is located on the fifth chromosome of sheep and it plays an  important role in the development of muscles and in meat tenderness. The present study was conducted to  investigate a calpastatin (CAST) gene polymorphism in Pakistani Thalli, Lohi and Kajli sheep breed. Random blood samples were collected from 300 animals (100 samples from each Thalli, Lohi and Kajli breeds).  Genomic DNA was extracted using phenol-chloroform extraction method. A 622 bp CAST gene segment (exon 1C/1D region) was amplified by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) using ovine specific primers. Restriction  fragment length polymorphisms (RFLPs) in the amplified fragments were studied using Msp1 restriction  enzyme. Frequencies of MM, MN and NN genotypes were found to be 77, 20 and 3% in Lohi breed and 68, 26 and 6% in Kajli breed respectively. In Thalli sheep, only the MM (80%) and MN (20%) genotypes were  detected. Chi-Square test (p < 0.05) showed that all the three populations used in this study were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium. By comparing the results of this study with those of previous studies, it seems that the MM genotype is the dominant genotype and the M allele is the dominant allele in small ruminant breeds belonging to different geographical locations.Key words: Thalli, Lohi, CAST gene, Kajli, polymorphism, Msp1, PCR-RFLP

    Reservoir Potential Evaluation of the Middle Paleocene Lockhart Limestone of the Kohat Basin, Pakistan: Petrophysical Analyses

    The Lockhart Limestone is evaluated for its reservoir potential by utilizing wireline logs of Shakardara-01 well from Kohat Basin, Pakistan. The analyses showed 28.03% average volume of shale (Vsh), 25.57% average neutron porosity (NPHI), 3.31% average effective porosity (PHIE), 76% average water saturation (Sw), and 24.10% average hydrocarbon saturation (Sh) of the Lockhart Limestone in Shakardara-01 well. Based on variation in petrophysical character, the reservoir units of the Lockhart Limestone are divided into three zones i.e., zone-1, zone-2 and zone-3. Out of these zones, zone-1 and zone-2 possess a poor reservoir potential for hydrocarbons as reflected by very low effective porosity (1.40 and 2.02% respectively) and hydrocarbon saturation (15 and 5.20%), while zone-3 has a moderate reservoir potential due to its moderate effective porosity (6.50%) and hydrocarbon saturation (52%) respectively. Overall, the average effective porosity of 3.31% and hydrocarbon saturation of 24.10% as well as 28.03% volume of shale indicated poor reservoir potential of the Lockhart Limestone. Lithologically, this formation is dominated by limestone and shale interbeds in the Shakardara-01 well. Cross-plots of the petrophysical parameters versus depth showed that the Lockhart Limestone is a poor to tight reservoir in Shakardara-01 well and can hardly produce hydrocarbons under conventional drilling conditions

    Parvimonasmicra bacteremia in a patient with colonic carcinoma

    Background: Parvimonas micra is a gram-positive anaerobe and a part of the normal commensal flora of the gastrointestinal tract. Factors predisposing to anaerobic bacteremia include malignant neoplasms, periodontal disease, immune deficiencies, chronic renal insufficiency, decubitus ulcers and perforated abdominal viscus. Cases of Parvimonas bacteremia in a patient with esophageal carcinoma and in a patient following ERCP procedure have been reported but to our best knowledge no case has been reported yet in which a patient had colonic carcinoma. Case presentation: We present a rare case of a 94-year-old male who presented with chief complaint of fever and constipation. Complete blood count revealed normal white blood cell count anemia. Urinalysis came out to be unremarkable for any evidence of infection. Two blood cultures grew Parvimonas micra and Gamella morbillorum and patient was later switched to ampicillin-sulbactam as per blood culture susceptibility results. Echocardiogram came negative for any evidence of infective endocarditis. CT abdomen/pelvis showed soft tissue mass in the ascending colon just superior to the ileocecal valve (fig.1, 2). Colonoscopy showed non-obstructing eccentric mass (fig. 3). Biopsy of the mass revealed moderately differentiated adenocarcinoma. Because of lack of distant metastasis, surgical resection of the mass as definitive curative treatment was done. Conclusion: Immune deficiency is a risk factor for anaerobic bacteremia. Apart from immediately starting the patient on antibiotics, a thorough search for malignancy may be considered when a patient presents with anaerobic bacteremia, especially, when the source of infection is not known. Identifying malignancy in earliest stages may improve treatment outcome

    Transformative capabilities of MedTech organizations in driving circularity in the healthcare industry: Insights from multiple cases

MedTech companies play a crucial role in advancing circularity within the sector by adopting sustainable approaches to product design, resource management, and waste reduction. This research aims to explore how MedTech companies initiate and drive transformation towards circular practices and the key factors influencing their successful transition. Using a qualitative approach, four multinational MedTech companies' case studies are conducted, employing semi-structured interviews with 33 managers and healthcare professionals. The results reveal a model grounded in dynamic capabilities, comprising three stages: sensing, seizing, and transforming, guided by adaptability and flexibility. The study extends the understanding of how MedTech companies can proactively respond to environmental challenges and embrace circular economy practices. Furthermore, the model offers practical implications for MedTech companies to foster sustainable practices, optimize resources, and enhance circularity in the healthcare industry

    Performance Evaluation of the Global Airline Industry under the Impact of the COVID- 19 Pandemic: A Dynamic Network Data Envelopment Analysis Approach

    This is the author accepted manuscript.The COVID-19 pandemic posed unprecedented challenges to the airline industry, necessitating a focus on maintaining high efficiency for profitability. This study assesses the efficiency of 26 international airlines from 2019 to 2022 using a dynamic network data envelopment analysis (DNDEA) methodology. The model accounts for the dynamic effect between two consecutive periods and incorporates an internal structure to evaluate airline performance across multiple dimensions. It enables the assessment of overall, period-specific, and stage-specific efficiencies. The findings reveal that while overall efficiency is moderately high on average, no airline achieved full efficiency during the pandemic. Efficiency decreased notably from 2019 to 2020, with a partial recovery but not a return to pre-pandemic levels by 2022. Operational performance remains satisfactory and stable, while service and financial performance exhibit lower efficiency, especially among low-cost airlines compared to full-service counterparts. Additionally, the study explores airlines' environmental impact by considering greenhouse gas emissions. Comparative analysis with a dynamic DEA model without internal structure highlights theoretical contributions, and the study offers managerial insights for airline leaders and policymakers

    Advancing dielectric and ferroelectric properties of piezoelectric polymers by combining graphene and ferroelectric ceramic additives for energy storage applications

    Published: 28 August 2018To address the limitations of piezoelectric polymers which have a low dielectric constant andto improve their dielectric and ferroelectric efficiency for energy storage applications, we designed and characterized a new hybrid composite that contains polyvinylidene fluoride as a dielectric polymer matrix combined with graphene platelets as a conductive and barium titanite as ceramic ferroelectric fillers. Different graphene/barium titanate/polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposite films were synthesized by changing the concentration of graphene and barium titanate to explore the impact of each component and their potential synergetic effect on dielectric and ferroelectric properties of the composite. Results showed that with an increase in the barium titanate fraction, dielectric efficiency ofthe nanocomposite was improved. Among all synthesized nanocomposite films, graphene/barium titanate/polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposite in the weight ratio of 0.15:0.5:1 exhibited thehighest dielectric constant of 199 at 40 Hz, i.e., 15 fold greater than that of neat polyvinylidene fluoride film at the same frequency, and possessed a low loss tangent of 0.6. However, AC conductivity and ferroelectric properties of graphene/barium titanate/polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposite films were enhanced with an increase in the graphene weight fraction. Graphene/barium titanate/polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposite films with a weight ratio of 0.2:0.1:1 possessed a high AC conductivity of 1.2 × 10-4 S/m at 40 Hz. While remanent polarization, coercive field, and loop area of the same sample were 0.9 μC/cm², 9.78 kV/cm, and 24.5 μC/cm²·V, respectively. Our results showed that a combination of graphene and ferroelectric ceramic additives are an excellent approach to significantly advance the performance of dielectric and ferroelectric properties of piezoelectric polymers for broad applications including energy storage.Saira Ishaq, Farah Kanwal, Shahid Atiq, Mahmoud Moussa, Umar Azhar, Muhammad Imran and Dusan Losi
