    Views from the coalface: chemo-sensors, sensor networks and the semantic sensor web

    Currently millions of sensors are being deployed in sensor networks across the world. These networks generate vast quantities of heterogeneous data across various levels of spatial and temporal granularity. Sensors range from single-point in situ sensors to remote satellite sensors which can cover the globe. The semantic sensor web in principle should allow for the unification of the web with the real-word. In this position paper, we discuss the major challenges to this unification from the perspective of sensor developers (especially chemo-sensors) and integrating sensors data in real-world deployments. These challenges include: (1) identifying the quality of the data; (2) heterogeneity of data sources and data transport methods; (3) integrating data streams from different sources and modalities (esp. contextual information), and (4) pushing intelligence to the sensor level

    Turbulence Nonlinearities Shed Light on Geometric Asymmetry in Tokamak Confinement Transitions

    A comprehensive study of fully frequency-resolved nonlinear kinetic energy transfer has been performed for the first time in a diverted tokamak, providing new insight into the parametric dependences of edge turbulence transitions. Measurements using gas puff imaging in the turbulent L-mode state illuminate the source of the long known but as yet unexplained "favorable-unfavorable" geometric asymmetry of the power threshold for transition to the turbulence-suppressed H mode. Results from the recently discovered I mode point to a competition between zonal flow (ZF) and geodesic-acoustic modes (GAM) for turbulent energy, while showing new evidence that the I-to-H transition is still dominated by ZFs. The availability of nonlinear drive for the GAM against net heat flux through the edge corresponds very well to empirical scalings found experimentally for accessing the I mode

    Intelligent middleware for adaptive sensing of tennis coaching sessions

    In professional tennis training matches, the coach needs to be able to view play from the most appropriate angle in order to monitor players activities. In this paper, we present a system which can adapt the operation of a series of cameras in order to maintain optimal system performance based on a set of wireless sensors. This setup is used as a testbed for an agent based intelligent middleware that can correlate data from many different wired and wireless sensors and provide effective in-situ decision making. The proposed solution is flexible enough to allow the addition of new sensors and actuators. Within this setup we also provide details of a case study for the embedded control of cameras through the use of Ubisense data

    Species-specific calcite production reveals Coccolithus pelagicus as the key calcifier in the Arctic Ocean

    Through the production and export of their calcite coccoliths, coccolithophores form a key component of the global carbon cycle. Despite this key role, very little is known about the biogeochemical role of different coccolithophore species in terms of calcite production, and how these species will respond to future climate change and ocean acidification. Here, we present the first study to estimate species-specific calcite production, from samples collected in the Arctic Ocean and subarctic Iceland Basin in June 2012. We show that although the coccolithophorid Coccolithus pelagicus comprised only a small fraction of the total community in terms of abundance (2%), our estimates indicate that it was the major calcite producer in the Arctic Ocean and Iceland Basin (57% of total calcite production). In contrast, Emiliania huxleyi formed 27% of the total abundance and was responsible for only 20% of the calcite production. That C. pelagicus was able to dominate calcite production was due to its relatively high cellular calcite content compared with the other species present. Our results demonstrate, for the first time, the importance of investigating the complete coccolithophore community when considering pelagic calcite production, as relatively rare but heavily calcified species such as C. pelagicus can be the key calcite producers in mixed communities. Therefore, the response of C. pelagicus to ocean acidification and climate change has the potential to have a major impact on carbon cycling within the North Atlantic and Arctic Ocean
