The Lines Between the Checkboxes : The Experiences of Racially Ambiguous People of Color

    Get PDF
The influences of race on people’s lived experiences are vast and enumerable. Despite advancements in multicultural counseling literature, the experiences of racially ambiguous people of color, or persons who do not align with preexisting ideas about race (Brown & Brown, 2004; James &Tucker, 2003; Young, Sanchez, & Wilton, 2013), are relatively unknown. Further, the racially ambiguous experience is often conflated with persons of mixed-race heritage (Young, Sanchez, & Wilton, 2013). The goal of this dissertation study was to understand the lived experiences of racially ambiguous people of color. Participants identifying as racially ambiguous were recruited to discuss their lived experiences. Grounded in Critical Race Theory (Crenshaw, Gotanda, Peller, & Thomas, 1995; Haskins & Singh, 2015), this phenomenological, qualitative study included two in-depth, semi-structured interviews. A cross section of 14 participants with varying ages, genders, racial compositions, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and cultures engaged in this study. Findings suggest that the construct of racial ambiguity is not confined to persons of mixed-race heritage, and racially ambiguous people of color have a unique lived experience. Participants identified being racially ambiguous resulted in a distinct understanding of race, varying interpersonal dynamics, and an emotional internal experience, affecting participants’ sense of self, wellness, and belonging. Implications for counseling practice, counselor education and supervision, and future research were provided

Near-bottom seismic profiling: High lateral variability, anomalous amplitudes, and estimates of attenuation

    Get PDF
For almost a decade the Marine Physical Laboratory of Scripps Institution of Oceanography has been conducting near‐bottom geophysical surveys involving quantitative seismic profiling. Operating initially at 4 kHz and more recently at 6 kHz, this system has provided a wealth of fine scale quantitative data on the acoustic properties of ocean sediments. Over lateral distances of a few meters, 7‐dB changes in overall reflected energy as well as 10‐dB changes from individual reflectors have been observed. Anomalously high amplitudes from deep reflectors have been commonly observed, suggesting that multilayer interference is prevalent in records from such pulsed cw profilers. This conclusion is supported by results from sediment core physical property work and related convolution modeling, as well as by the significant differences observed between 4‐ and 6‐kHz profiles. In general, however, lateral consistency has been adequate in most areas surveyed to permit good estimates of acoustic attenuation from returns from dipping reflectors and sediment wedges

    AutoJack - Hydraulic Powertrain System

    Get PDF
A primary problem for mechanics and automotive enthusiasts is the risk associated with lifting and securing a vehicle with conventional jack stands. Often times, improper jack-stand installation results in the vehicle collapsing unexpectedly, causing injury and/or death. This problem can be minimized through the application of a newly re-designed vehicle lifting system. The conventional method for lifting cars is time consuming and can be unsafe in many circumstances. A better, safer, and more efficient lift design was needed; the AutoJack. The approach of the AutoJack design was entirely focused on the safety of lifting a vehicle. Safety was improved by creating an automated, hydraulically powered system that doesn’t require the user to maneuver under the vehicle to lift or position jack stands. In doing so, the design has removed the operator from a potentially hazardous environment, maximizing safety. The frame design of the AutoJack features a contact area of 4 square feet, a massive improvement over the 4in2 standard stability area. Compared to the standard 2-ton floor jack, the AutoJack has a 500% increase in maximum load capacity, a 27% greater maximum lift capacity, a lift speed increase of 100% (2in/s to 4in/s), an operational time reduction of 30%, a jack-to-vehicle contact area (safety) increase of 14,400% (4in2 to 4ft2), and a total cost reduction of 40%. The AutoJack is also user-friendlier since the user is only required to slide the device under the vehicle. This device maximizes safety while saving time and money. The AutoJack will save lives

Regulatory Lies and Section 6(c)(2): The Promise and Pitfalls of the CFTC\u27s New False Statement Authority

    Get PDF
Among the many changes wrought by Dodd-Frank was the grant of a significant but little-noticed power to the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) to bring civil enforcement actions against those who make false representations to the Agency. Under the provision, the CFTC can bring an action for a statement made in any context, and the Commission need not refer the matter to the Department of Justice (DOJ) for criminal prosecution under 18 U.S.C. § 1001, as has traditionally been the practice. Nor must the CFTC demonstrate that the speaker knowingly lied. Instead, the CFTC can bring a false statement enforcement action subject to a preponderance of the evidence standard, and it need only prove that the speaker reasonably should have known a statement was false-a power denied to all other financial regulatory agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). The SEC\u27s former director of enforcement, Robert Khuzami, has said in reference to the CFTC\u27s broad new false statement authority, Frankly, I wish we had the power the CFTC has

    Historical Revisionism: Revising or Rewriting

    Get PDF
Historical revisionism has long been a part of effective academic historiography. A constant re-analysis of the past and how previous historians came to their conclusions about it enable corrections to be made and new findings to be incorporated into modern and future historical metanarratives. While plentiful positive examples of this practice exist, in part because of an understanding of history as a discipline and how it is correctly and incorrectly represented in adaptations, notable poor and inappropriate examples of revisionism also exist. These rewrites are usually political and are often contested by political opponents and academics, but nevertheless persist. Understanding how both good and bad practices of revisionism have occurred enable historians of today to correct historiographic mistakes and malpractice in the discipline

Modulation of Fast and Slow Inactivation in Two Cardiac NAv Channel Isoforms by SDZ 211-939

    Get PDF
Here we report a hitherto unknown effect of a synthetic inactivation inhibitor on inactivation in cardiac sodium channels (Nav1.5) from two different species: human and bovine. SDZ 211-93 9 stabilized the slow inactivated-state in both channels as seen by an increased steady-state probability of slow inactivation. SDZ also destabilized the fast-inactivated state and increased the amplitude of persistent currents. SDZ modulated conductance parameters, open-state fast inactivation time constants, and activation kinetics of hNav1.5, but not bNav1.5. These findings will aid future studies designed to elucidate the binding site and molecular mechanisms of inactivation inhibitors such as SDZ 211-939

Using Leisure as a Therapeutic Activity to Enhance Health, Well-Being, and Quality of Life among Long Term Care Residents

    Get PDF
Purpose The purpose of this scholarly project is to address health, well-being, and quality of life with the use of leisure activities as modalities with residents in long term care (LTC) facilities. Methodology The results of a thorough literature review supported the need for a program to address leisure participation in residents in LTC facilities. An abundance of literature supporting participation in leisure to enhance health, well-being, and quality of life emerged from the literature review, revealing an obvious gap between literature and practice. The information gathered in the literature review helped guide the development of a program manual to be used by LTC facility staff. The products were designed using concepts from the environment-health-occupational-well-being (E-HOW) theoretical model (Pizzi & Richards, 2017), as well as from the adult learning theory of andragogy (Bastable & Dart, 2011). E-HOW aims to address the health, environment, and occupational participation of an individual to enhance quality of life and well-being (Pizzi & Richards, 2017); whereas, andragogy focuses on how to best relay information to an adult learner (Bastable & Dart, 2011). Aspects from these two theories were used to increase the usability and effectiveness of the program and in-service manuals for LTC facility staff. Results The literature review and the theoretical models resulted in the development of two products. The first product is a program manual that gives LTC facility staff detailed information on how to implement a leisure-based program into the facility with collaboration between the occupational therapist, activity and restorative aide personnel, and the resident. The second product is an educational in-service aimed at educating staff on the correct ways to utilize the program manual. Conclusions It is anticipated that both the program manual and the in-service manual will be effective solutions to the barriers LTC residents currently face that result in occupational deprivation. Both manuals will serve as a resource to occupational therapists and activity and restorative aide personnel to both guide the development of health promoting functional maintenance programs (FMP) and to ensure that the leisure interests of each resident are addressed
