Problems in vulnerable families are multilayered and include the intersection of physical, psychosocial and other forms of distress. The multidimensional nature of the problems of these families is closely linked to the fact that there are many institutions in the field of education, social welfare, health care and others, in which treatment and support are not satisfactory or adapted to their needs. The article presents the partial results of a large-scale qualitative research study, results that refer to the position of vulnerable families in the context of preschool education. The study examined how vulnerability is experienced by parents of preschool children, how the expert workers in the preschools involved in the study responded to the parents’ vulnerability, and how they cooperated with experts from other services outside the preschool. A qualitative research method was used in the study. Data was collected partly through semi-structured interviews with various expert workers employed in two preschools, as well as with the parents of children in the preschools; the interviews were conducted individually and in focus groups. Using thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2006), we have identified four representative themes: amongst parents, the two recurring themes can be subsumed under the headings “from door to door” and “adaptation/flexibility”, and amongst experts, under the headings “powerlessness/incompetence/lack of information” and “power/innovation/sensitivity”. The study finds that the ability to effectively contend with vulnerability presumes a reconceptualisation of the attitude of institutional preschool education towards the family, including a change in the professional role of preschool teachers. This paper analyses examples of existing kindergartens’ buildings in Serbia in terms of meeting the requirements of spatial capacity and compliance with the minimum standards of required area. Surveyed buildings are dating from various periods. Over time, their environments have undergone numerous changes and interventions, so it is important to establish whether basic requirements are been violated. The second parameter is the degree of land availability, and the existence or nonexistence of free space for possible intervention aimed at changing urban context. Finally, the third aspect is the possibility of using the closest environment to amend the urban environment parameters that would affect the local climate change, reducing outside air temperature in summer or increasing in winter, changing direction or stopping unwanted effects of dominant winds. Namely, by the influence on the input parameters, the need for thermal insulation and the method of ventilation could be changed. The norms are dealing predominantly with the external building envelope and with the insulation, which is necessary, but the last in a series of interventions and by far the most expensive, as a solution. Due to frequent climatic anomalies, global trends are going in the direction of prevention, while interventions have been aimed at the urban environment and the use of space resources. Possible changes in city planning, transformation and revitalization of the area would also have a significant impact on the physical environment and the energy efficiency of buildings

Village Knez Selo in the Context of Sustainable Development

The paper analyses the present condition of the sustainability elements at the level of a village, and then on the relevant representative sample of the households, according to the parameters of sustainability defined in advance. By definition, such analysis of natural, economic, human and spatial resources provides the scope of the present status, but also defines the sustainability degree, and the capacities and potential directions of development. The obtained results and drawn conclusions served as a platform for the analysis of the future development and transformation of the village and the households’ courtyards as spatial manifestation of households in general. Knez Selo belongs to, by its morphology, compact type of villages, and has been firstly uninhabited since Roman Empire. Position of the higher ground and the excellent view towards Nis’s valley has always been interesting place for living. There are rich complexes of forests and pastures, and favourable conditions for livestock keeping, mild climate, as well as many other natural and environmental values in the village locality, which has caused that in XX century a hospital (later clinic) for lungs diseases had been built nearby the settlement. It is situated 10km from the centre of the city of Nis with decent traffic roads and public transport, this settlement took a turn and during 70’s and 80’s started transformation from rural mostly agricultural village towards a cottage village with substantial number of cottages mainly build by people who live in the city. With steady number of inhabitants a little less than 1000, this settlement belongs to semi-urban areas that have multiple chances for sustainability. Although it is economically weak with no clear developmental discourse, this village have enough natural and human resources for consideration of sustainable future development

ENova pravila igre za delavce? Airbnb in Platformna Ekonomija Changing Employment in the Sharing Economy: The Case of Airbnb

The paper explores how new digital business models of the sharing economy are challenging the nature of employment. This discussion is set within the context of the tourist accommodation sector, specifically examining the case of Airbnb. Arguably, a significant change in working practices is occurring because of the rise of the so-called sharing economy. We present the debate on whether this is representative of "sharing" in such an economy, and argue that in the case of Airbnb the term "platform economy" is a more valid description of the phenomenon. We postulate that the way in which Airbnb specifically challenges traditional employment relationships is through three processes that have existed prior to the rise of the platform economy business models: free or minimally payed digital labour and related redefinitions of work; consumers' commentaries as the main elements of managerial attempts at controlling the quality of service work; and social media use and accompanying commodification having an increasing role in blurring of life and work boundaries

Challenges of commercial aquaponics in Europe : beyond the hype

    Get PDF
In recent years, aquaponics has been receiving increased interest globally as a commercial food production technology and aquaponics start-up companies have been formed in most European countries. Between 2014 and 2018, the European-funded COST Action FA1305 “The EU Aquaponics Hub-Realising Sustainable Integrated Fish and Vegetable Production for the EU” created a strong network of researchers and entrepreneurs. However, surveys show that the aquaponic production in Europe is still very limited, and very few companies are economically viable. In order to obtain insights into the barriers to early development of commercial aquaponics, two surveys were carried out—one in Europe, which included France, and one in France alone, with a different protocol. Henceforth, for simplicity, the former will be referred to as Europe and the latter as France. The results reveal that the development of commercial aquaponics has hit the level of “disillusionment”, caused by numerous challenges facing commercial food production. As the understanding of the processes involved in aquaponics is increasing, it will be very interesting to follow the developments in the field over the coming years in order to ascertain whether aquaponics will follow the phases outlined by the “Gartner’s Hype Cycle” and thus proceed to become an established technology, or whether it will remain an “one hit wonder” and disappear in the “Trough of Disillusionment”

Education and Training Imperatives for Future Tourism Competencies: The Case of Slovenia.

    Get PDF
BACKGROUND: Research has long shown that there is a need for better tourism education. Previous research has mainly focused on management’s perceptions of the need for future competencies in tourism, while employees’ perceptions in general have not been properly investigated. OBJECTIVE: This paper identifies tourism employees’ perceptions of the competencies needed in the tourism industry in the future. METHODS: Based on a survey questionnaire, we analysed the attitudes of 226 tourism employees regarding the competencies they estimate they will need in the future. RESULTS: According to the employees, the most important competencies are a high level of hospitality, the ability to work with people, cooperation with stakeholders and emotional intelligence. In contrast, digital literacy is rated as less important, indicating that employees expect tourism to continue to be primarily a ‘human contact’ industry. We found statistically significant differences in respondents’ assessments in relation to their education, hierarchical position, age and area of work in tourism, but not in relation to their gender. CONCLUSIONS: The findings have practical value for tourism curriculum and training developers at all levels of education, and also provide important details with regard to the need for future research

PASSIVE DESIGN APPLICATIONS - INDUSTRIAL ARCHITECTURE PERSPECTIVE

Abstract. This paper deals with the process of design in the context of the idea of energy conservation. We used analytical instruments in order to extract the principles and methods the architects used in their design as the solutions for passive design concepts. We narrowed down our research focus to the industrial architecture as a paradigm of the contemporary designs that is very much into the idea of green technology and energy conservation. As great energy consumers by their function, investors of the industrial buildings are justifiably interested in building a more energy effective building. There is a characteristic difference in the design of industrial architecture and the other types that also make passive design applications specific. Using the case study method and invert method of translation, we have examined the selected design projects. We tend to make some progress in the field of architectural design methodology, as a main area of application of our findings. The idea was to make the proposition of methodological principles extracted from the successful architectural practice for more rational and less time-consuming design method that has passive design component. Key words: energy efficiency, passive design, industrial architecture, solar architecture, case study, design principle
