    Nutrition challenges ahead

    The breakout session ‘Nutrition challenges ahead’ was held at the EFSA 2nd Scientific Conference ‘Shaping the Future of Food Safety, Together’ (Milan, Italy, 14–16 October 2015) to address the main problems in the area of nutrition to be faced in the 21st Century, both at a global and individual level. The nutrition challenges ahead are diverse and depend on agricultural, socioeconomic and individual factors. At a global level, food security, food sustainability and decreasing the impact of food production on climate change are of paramount importance. Decreasing the prevalence of obesity and related disorders, which may coexist with selected micronutrient deficiencies, is a major challenge for wealthy countries; for developing countries and rural food systems, fighting protein–energy malnutrition and micronutrient deficiencies is a priority. Diets based on a wide variety of nutrient-rich local plant foods (e.g. fruits, vegetables, whole grain cereals, vegetable oils, nuts) that contain moderate amounts of animal protein (preferably in the form of fish) and are low in saturated and trans-fatty acids, added sugars and sodium, are healthy, nutritious, sustainable and climate friendly. Creating an environment where such diets are also economically advantageous and convenient may be a part of a global solution to these nutritional challenges. Individuals, however, are unique regarding their genetic background, gut microbiota and health status. In addition, nutrition may already play a role in the development (and prevention) of disease very early in life. Thus, additional health benefits could be achieved by tailoring nutritional strategies to particular population subgroups or even individuals on the basis of current and future knowledge about the relationship between nutrients, genes, the microbiome and health. New technologies and food innovation may help in finding novel foods fit for purpose

    The Purr of the Lionfish: Sound and Behavioral Context of Wild Lionfish in the Greater Caribbean

    Passive acoustic technology has become a useful and cost-effective method to collect data with very high temporal resolution that can be used to detect the presence, distribution, and remotely monitor soniferous marine biodiversity. In order to maximize the potential of bioacoustic and soundscape research in the oceans, understanding the association between the different realms of sound sources, species-specific calls and behavioral context of sound production are fundamental. A previously unknown vocalization was associated with a behavioral display of lionfish (Pterois spp.) by recordings with synchronous audio and video at deep coral reefs in both Puerto Rico and the Florida Keys. Calls of variable length in bouts of intermittent calls were heard along displays between pairs of lionfish. Calls had a mean frequency of 251 Hz and very low mean SPL (72-67 dB re 1ÎŒPa). This sound may be classified as courtship related as it was observed between two lionfish that appeared of dissimilar size (presumably male and female), engaged in following and circling displays. The sound occurred in the afternoons near sunset at both sites. This is the first reported sound produced by lionfish in association with a behavioral display in the wild. Low sound pressure levels suggest this is a quiet signal for communication between individuals in close proximity. With this description the presence of lionfish in areas deeper than normal diving limits or during inaccessible times, e.g., during the evening, could be pursued

    A Generic Primary-control Model for Grid-forming Inverters: Towards Interoperable Operation & Control

    This paper outlines an architectural vision centered around the notion of interoperability to integrate grid-forming inverter-based resources in large-scale grids. With the underlying principle of interoperability guiding developments, we focus on modeling the characteristics of droop, virtual synchronous machine, and virtual oscillator controls. Emphasis is placed on these three controllers since they are leading grid-forming control candidates and are likely to be commonplace as primary-control schemes in future systems. We show that these controllers can each be considered as instantiations of a more generic model and that all these controllers exhibit similar droop-like relations between pertinent terminal variables in steady state. This commonality between controllers gives interoperability among them such that automatic synchronization, power sharing, and voltage regulation can be achieved. Simulation results validate the models and demonstrate how the steady-state droop characteristics of these control methods can be aligned with the aid of the developed modeling paradigm

    "I do lack peace, and I've run out of answers": primary caregivers' perspectives on social and behaviour problems in cerebral malaria survivors in Blantyre, Malawi.

    BackgroundDespite recent advances in treatment and prevention, the prevalence of cerebral malaria (CM) remains high globally, especially in children under 5 years old. As treatment improves, more children will survive episodes of CM with lasting neurodisabilities, such as social and behavioural issues. Behaviour problems in children who survive CM are poorly characterized, and the impact of caring for a child with post-CM behaviour issues has not been well-explored. Caregivers' perceptions of and experiences with their child's post-CM behaviour problems are reported here.MethodsSemi-structured interviews were conducted with 29 primary caregivers of children who survived CM with reported behaviour issues in Blantyre, Malawi. Interviews were conducted in ChicheƔa, audio-recorded, transcribed, and translated into English. Data were coded manually, utilizing inductive and deductive approaches. Identified codes were thematically analysed.ResultsPost-CM behaviours reported include externalizing, aggressive behaviours and learning difficulties. Variable timescales for behaviour change onset were noted, and most caregivers reported some evolution of their child's behaviour over time. Caregivers experienced a variety of emotions connected to their child's behaviour and to reactions of family and community members. Caregivers who experienced discrimination were more likely to describe negative emotions tied to their child's behaviour changes, compared to caregivers who experienced support.ConclusionsCaregiver perceptions of behaviour changes in post-CM survivors are variable, and caregiver experience is strongly impacted by family and community member responses. Future educational, rehabilitation, and support-based programmes should focus on the specific types of behaviour problems identified and the difficulties faced by caregivers and their communities

    An integrated connectivity risk ranking for phosphorus and nitrogen along agricultural open ditches to inform targeted and specific mitigation management

    Introduction: On dairy farms with poorly drained soils and high rainfall, open ditches receive nutrients from different sources along different pathways which are delivered to surface water. Recently, open ditches were ranked in terms of their hydrologic connectivity risk for phosphorus (P) along the open ditch network. However, the connectivity risk for nitrogen (N) was not considered in that analysis, and there remains a knowledge gap. In addition, the P connectivity classification system assumes all source–pathway interactions within open ditches are active, but this may not be the case for N. The objective of the current study, conducted across seven dairy farms, was to create an integrated connectivity risk ranking for P and N simultaneously to better inform where and which potential mitigation management strategies could be considered.Methods: First, a conceptual figure of known N open ditch source–pathway connections, developed using both the literature and observations in the field, was used to identify water grab sampling locations on the farms. During fieldwork, all open ditch networks were digitally mapped, divided into ditch sections, and classified in terms of the existing P connectivity classification system.Results and Discussion: The results showed that not all source–pathway connections were present across ditch categories for all species of N. This information was used to develop an improved open ditch connectivity classification system. Farmyard-connected ditches were the riskiest for potential point source losses, and outlet ditches had the highest connectivity risk among the other ditch categories associated with diffuse sources. Tailored mitigation options for P and N speciation were identified for these locations to intercept nutrients before reaching receiving waters. In ditches associated with diffuse sources, nitrate was introduced by subsurface sources (i.e., in-field drains and groundwater interactions from springs, seepage, and upwelling) and ammonium was introduced through surface connectivity pathways (i.e., runoff from internal roadways). On similar dairy farms where open ditches are prevalent, the integrated classification system and mapping procedure presented herein will enable a targeted and nutrient-specific mitigation plan to be developed. The same methodology may be applied to develop a bespoke integrated connectivity risk ranking for P and N along agricultural open ditches in other areas

    Effects of exogenous dietary advanced glycation end products on the cross-talk mechanisms linking microbiota to metabolic inflammation

    Heat-processed diets contain high amounts of advanced glycation end products (AGEs). Here we explore the impact of an AGE-enriched diet on markers of metabolic and inflammatory disorders as well as on gut microbiota composition and plasma proteins glycosylation pattern. C57BL/6 mice were allocated into control diet (CD, n = 15) and AGE-enriched diet (AGE-D, n = 15) for 22 weeks. AGE-D was prepared replacing casein by methylglyoxal hydroimidazolone-modified casein. AGE-D evoked increased insulin and a significant reduction of GIP/GLP-1 incretins and ghrelin plasma levels, altered glucose tolerance, and impaired insulin signaling transduction in the skeletal muscle. Moreover, AGE-D modified the systemic glycosylation profile, as analyzed by lectin microarray, and increased N\u3b5-carboxymethyllysine immunoreactivity and AGEs receptor levels in ileum and submandibular glands. These effects were associated to increased systemic levels of cytokines and impaired gut microbial composition and homeostasis. Significant correlations were recorded between changes in bacterial population and in incretins and inflammatory markers levels. Overall, our data indicates that chronic exposure to dietary AGEs lead to a significant unbalance in incretins axis, markers of metabolic inflammation, and a reshape of both the intestinal microbiota and plasma protein glycosylation profile, suggesting intriguing pathological mechanisms underlying AGEs-induced metabolic derangements

    Microbial and metabolic characterization of organic artisanal sauerkraut fermentation and study of gut health-promoting properties of sauerkraut brine

    Sauerkraut is a traditionally fermented cabbage, and recent evidence suggests that it has beneficial properties for human health. In this work, a multi-disciplinary approach was employed to characterize the fermentation process and gut health-promoting properties of locally produced, organic sauerkraut from two distinct producers, SK1 and SK2. 16S rRNA metataxonomics showed that bacterial diversity gradually decreased as fermentation progressed. Differences in sauerkraut microbiota composition were observed between the two producers, especially at the start of fermentation. Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) dominated the microbiota after 35 days, with Lactiplantibacillus being the dominant genus in both sauerkraut products, together with Leuconostoc and Paucilactobacillus in SK1, and with Pediococcus, Levilactibacillus, and Leuconostoc in SK2. LAB reached between 7 and 8 Log CFU/mL brine at the end of fermentation (35 days), while pH lowering happened within the first week of fermentation. A total of 220 LAB strains, corresponding to 133 RAPD-PCR biotypes, were successfully isolated. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum and Lactiplantibacillus pentosus accounted for 67% of all SK1 isolates, and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum/paraplantarum and Leuconostoc mesenteroides represented 72% of all the isolates from SK2. 1H-NMR analysis revealed significant changes in microbial metabolite profiles during the fermentation process, with lactic and acetic acids, as well as amino acids, amines, and uracil, being the dominant metabolites quantified. Sauerkraut brine did not affect trans-epithelial electrical resistance through a Caco-2 cell monolayer as a measure of gut barrier function. However, significant modulation of inflammatory response after LPS stimulation was observed in PBMCs-Caco-2 co-culture. Sauerkraut brine supported a robust inflammatory response to endotoxin, by increasing TNF-α and IL-6 production while also stimulating the anti-inflammatory IL-10, therefore suggesting positive resolution of inflammation after 24 h and supporting the potential of sauerkraut brine to regulate intestinal immune function
