Tool repairs tube components in situ

An investigation of the relationship between rumination styles, hope, and suicide ideation through the lens of the integrated motivational-volitional model of suicidal behavior
To investigate the roles specific ruminative styles (brooding and reflection) and hope play in the Integrated Motivational-Volitional (IMV) model of suicidal behavior. Participants were students from a large U.S. state university who were selectively sampled for the experience of recent suicide ideation. Results of a bootstrapped moderated mediation model indicated that defeat had a direct effect on suicide ideation but not an indirect effect on suicide ideation through entrapment. Brooding, but not reflection, strengthened the relationship between defeat and entrapment. Hope weakened the relationship between entrapment and suicide ideation. Implications for the assessment and treatment of suicide risk and future research directions are discussed
Progression and assessment in foreign languages at Key Stage 2
The teaching of primary languages has been increasing steadily, in response to the future entitlement for all Key Stage 2 (KS2) pupils aged 7-11 to learn a foreign language by 2010. However, there remain concerns about progression both within KS2 and through to secondary school and about how learners' progress is assessed. This paper presents findings on the issues of progression and assessment taken from case studies which formed part of a project funded by the then Department for Education and Skills (DfES), now the Department for Children, Schools and Families (DCSF). This project set out to evaluate 19 local authority (LA) Pathfinders in England that were piloting the introduction of foreign language learning at KS2 between 2003 and 2005. Findings revealed that there was inconsistency between schools, even within each LA Pathfinder, in the use of schemes of work and that assessment was generally underdeveloped in the majority of the Pathfinders. In order to set these findings in context, this paper examines the issues of progression and assessment in foreign language learning in England. Finally, it investigates the challenges English primary schools face in terms of progression and assessment in the light of the new entitlement and discusses implications for the future. Managing progression, both within KS2 and through to secondary school at KS3 (ages 11-14), is one of the key factors in determining the overall success of starting languages in primary school

Influence of qubit displacements on quantum logic operations in a silicon-based quantum computer with constant interaction
The errors caused by qubit displacements from their prescribed locations in
an ensemble of spin chains are estimated analytically and calculated
numerically for a quantum computer based on phosphorus donors in silicon. We
show that it is possible to polarize (initialize) the nuclear spins even with
displaced qubits by using Controlled NOT gates between the electron and nuclear
spins of the same phosphorus atom. However, a Controlled NOT gate between the
displaced electron spins is implemented with large error because of the
exponential dependence of exchange interaction constant on the distance between
the qubits. If quantum computation is implemented on an ensemble of many spin
chains, the errors can be small if the number of chains with displaced qubits
is small

Wall-resolved large eddy simulation for aeroengine aeroacoustic investigation
The work presented here forms part of a larger project on Large-Eddy Simulation (LES) of aeroengine aeroacoustic interactions. In this paper, we concentrate on LES of near-field flow over an isolated NACA0012 aerofoil at zero angle-of-attack and a chord based Reynolds number of Rec = 2 × 105. A wall-resolved compressible Numerical Large Eddy Simulation (NLES) approach is employed to resolve streak-like structures in the near-wall flow regions. The calculated unsteady pressure/velocity field will be imported into an analyticallybased scheme for far-field trailing-edge noise prediction later. The boundary-layer mean and root-mean-square (rms) velocity profiles, the surface pressure fluctuation over the aerofoil, and the wake flow development are compared with experimental data and previous computational simulations in our research group. It is found that the results from the wall-resolved compressible NLES are very encouraging as they correlate well with test data. The main features of the wall-resolved compressible NLES, as well as the advantages of such compressible NLES over previous incompressible LES performed in our research group, are also discussed.

The kinetics of surfactant desorption at the air–solution interface
The kinetics of desorption of the anionic surfactant sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate at the air–solution interface have been studied using neutron reflectivity (NR). The experimental arrangement incorporates a novel flow cell in which the subphase can be exchanged (diluted) using a laminar flow whilst the surface region remains unaltered. The kinetics of the desorption is relatively slow and occurs over many tens of minutes compared with the dilution timescale of approximately 10–30 minutes. A detailed mathematical model, in which the rate of the desorption is determined by transport through a near-surface diffusion layer into a diluted bulk solution below, is developed and provides a good description of the timedependent adsorption data.\ud

A key parameter of the model is the ratio of the depth of the diffusion layer, Hc , to the depth of the fluid, Hf, and we find that this is related to the reduced Péclet number, Pe*, for the system, via Hc/Hf, = C/Pe* 1/ 2 . Although from a highly idealised experimental arrangement, the results provide an important insight into the ‘rinse mechanism’, which is applicable to a wide variety of domestic and industrial circumstances
Temperature effects on the 15-85-micron spectra of olivines and pyroxenes
Far-infrared spectra of laboratory silicates are normally obtained at room
temperature even though the grains responsible for astronomical silicate
emission bands seen at wavelengths >20 micron are likely to be at temperatures
below ~150 K. In order to investigate the effect of temperature on silicate
spectra, we have obtained absorption spectra of powdered forsterite and
olivine, along with two orthoenstatites and diopside clinopyroxene, at 3.5+-0.5
K and at room temperature (295+-2K). To determine the changes in the spectra
the resolution must be increased from 1 to 0.25 cm^-1 at both temperatures
since a reduction in temperature reduces the phonon density, thereby reducing
the width of the infrared peaks. Several bands observed at 295 K split at 3.5
K. At 3.5 K the widths of isolated single bands in olivine, enstatites and
diopside are ~ 90% of their 295 K-widths. However, in forsterite the
3.5-K-widths of the 31-, 49- and 69-micron bands are, respectively, 90%, 45%
and 31% of their 295 K widths. Due to an increase in phonon energy as the
lattice contracts, 3.5-K-singlet peaks occur at shorter wavelengths than do the
corresponding 295-K peaks; the magnitude of the wavelength shift increases from
\~ 0-0.2 micron at 25 micron to ~0.9 micron at 80 micron. Changes in the
relative absorbances of spectral peaks are also observed. The temperature
dependence of lambda_pk and bandwidth shows promise as a means to deduce
characteristic temperatures of mineralogically distinct grain populations. In
addition, the observed changes in band strength with temperature will affect
estimates of grain masses and relative mineral abundances inferred using
