    MODISTools - downloading and processing MODIS remotely sensed data in R

    Remotely sensed data – available at medium to high resolution across global spatial and temporal scales – are a valuable resource for ecologists. In particular, products from NASA's MODerate-resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), providing twice-daily global coverage, have been widely used for ecological applications. We present MODISTools, an R package designed to improve the accessing, downloading, and processing of remotely sensed MODIS data. MODISTools automates the process of data downloading and processing from any number of locations, time periods, and MODIS products. This automation reduces the risk of human error, and the researcher effort required compared to manual per-location downloads. The package will be particularly useful for ecological studies that include multiple sites, such as meta-analyses, observation networks, and globally distributed experiments. We give examples of the simple, reproducible workflow that MODISTools provides and of the checks that are carried out in the process. The end product is in a format that is amenable to statistical modeling. We analyzed the relationship between species richness across multiple higher taxa observed at 526 sites in temperate forests and vegetation indices, measures of aboveground net primary productivity. We downloaded MODIS derived vegetation index time series for each location where the species richness had been sampled, and summarized the data into three measures: maximum time-series value, temporal mean, and temporal variability. On average, species richness covaried positively with our vegetation index measures. Different higher taxa show different positive relationships with vegetation indices. Models had high R2 values, suggesting higher taxon identity and a gradient of vegetation index together explain most of the variation in species richness in our data.     Asymptotic and numerical analysis of a simple model for blade coating

    Motivated by the industrial process of blade coating, the two-dimensional flow of a thin film of Newtonian fluid on a horizontal substrate moving parallel to itself with constant speed under a fixed blade of finite length in which the flows upstream and downstream of the blade are coupled via the flow under the blade is analysed. A combination of asymptotic and numerical methods is used to investigate the number and nature of the steady solutions that exist. Specially, it is found that in the presence of gravity there is always at least one, and (depending on the parameter values) possibly as many as three, steady solutions, and that when multiple solutions occur they are identical under and downstream of the blade, but differ upstream of it.     Development, printability and post-curing studies of formulations of materials resistant to microbial attachment for use in inkjet based 3D printing

    Purpose: This paper aims to print 3D structures from polymers that resist bacterial attachment by reactive jetting of acrylate monomers. Design/methodology/approach: The first step towards printing was ink development. Inks were characterised to carry out an estimation of their potential printability using the Z parameter to predict stable jetting conditions. Printability conditions were optimised for each ink using a Dimatix DMP-2800, which enabled 3D structures to be fabricated. Findings: UV photo-initiated polymers, which resist bacterial attachment, were found to be printable using piezo-based inkjet printers. The waveform required for each ink depends on the value of the Z parameter. Once the waveform and the printability parameters were optimised, 3D objects were fabricated. Research limitations/implications: This methodology has been confirmed as an effective method to 3D print materials that have been demonstrated to be bacteria resistant. However, ink curing depends on modification of some parameters (such as photoinitiator concentration or UV exposure time) which would result in an improvement of the curing process post jetting. Social implications: The combination of inkjet based 3D printing with new materials resistant to bacterial attachment means the possibility of building customised medical devices with a high level of complexity and bespoke features can be fully realised. The scope and variability of the devices produced will exceed what can be achieved using standard fabrication methodologies and can be applied to reduce the incidence of device associated infections and to address increased morbidity, mortality and health care costs associated with nosocomial infections. Originality/value: In this paper, the novel use of materials that resist bacterial attachment has been described to build 3D structures using material jetting. Its value lies on the potential impact this methodology could produce in the biomedical device and research fields

    Introduction to the Anti-Racism Virtual Issue of the Journal of Occupational Science

    The anti-racism virtual issue of the Journal of Occupational Science (JOS) came about after the Editorial Board expressed its commitment to anti-racist work, publishing the position statement ‘A Pledge to Mobilize Against Racism’ (Stanley et al., 2020). In this statement, the Board promised to republish a collection of articles to call attention to racism and its impact on individuals’ doing and society. The intent is to stimulate critical reflection on the contribution occupational scientists can make to exposing and countering racism in everyday doing. As such, the anti-racism virtual issue helps meet a pressing need to recognize the power of occupation in shaping and reproducing social ideologies, attitudes, and behaviors. We, the authors, urge all occupational scientists to build on this knowledge and continue learning about racism to better understand and address how its different dimensions manifest through occupation and everyday life

    Mn Interstitial Diffusion in (Ga,Mn)As

    We present a combined theoretical and experimental study of the ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As which explains the remarkably large changes observed on low temperature annealing. Careful control of the annealing conditions allows us to obtain samples with ferromagnetic transition temperatures up to 159 K. Ab initio calculations, and resistivity measurements during annealing, show that the observed changes are due to out-diffusion of Mn interstitials towards the surface, governed by an energy barrier of about 0.7-0.8 eV. The Mn interstitial is a double donor resulting in compensation of charge carriers and suppression of ferromagnetism. Electric fields induced by high concentrations of substitutional Mn acceptors have a significant effect on the diffusion.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Physical Review Letter

    A Decolonial Critique of the Racialized “Localwashing” of Extraction in Central Africa

    Responding to calls for increased attention to actions and reactions “from above” within the extractive industry, we offer a decolonial critique of the ways in which corporate entities and multinational institutions propagate racialized rhetoric of “local” suffering, “local” consultation, and “local” fault for failure in extractive zones. Such rhetoric functions to legitimize extractive intervention within a set of practices that we call localwashing. Drawing from a decade of research on and along the Chad-Cameroon Oil Pipeline, we show how multi-scalar actors converged to assert knowledge of, responsibility for, and collaborations with “local” people within a racialized politics of scale. These corporate representations of the racialized “local” are coded through long-standing colonial tropes. We identify three interrelated and overlapping flexian elite rhetoric(s) and practices of racialized localwashing: (a) anguishing, (b) arrogating, and (c) admonishing. These elite representations of a racialized “local” reveal diversionary efforts “from above” to manage public opinion, displace blame for project failures, and domesticate dissent in a context of persistent scrutiny and criticism from international and regional advocates and activists

    Conformal Mapping on Rough Boundaries II: Applications to bi-harmonic problems

    We use a conformal mapping method introduced in a companion paper to study the properties of bi-harmonic fields in the vicinity of rough boundaries. We focus our analysis on two different situations where such bi-harmonic problems are encountered: a Stokes flow near a rough wall and the stress distribution on the rough interface of a material in uni-axial tension. We perform a complete numerical solution of these two-dimensional problems for any univalued rough surfaces. We present results for sinusoidal and self-affine surface whose slope can locally reach 2.5. Beyond the numerical solution we present perturbative solutions of these problems. We show in particular that at first order in roughness amplitude, the surface stress of a material in uni-axial tension can be directly obtained from the Hilbert transform of the local slope. In case of self-affine surfaces, we show that the stress distribution presents, for large stresses, a power law tail whose exponent continuously depends on the roughness amplitude

    ω-Conotoxin GVIA mimetics that bind and inhibit neuronal Cav2.2 ion channels

    The neuronal voltage-gated N-type calcium channel (Cav2.2) is a validated target for the treatment of neuropathic pain. A small library of anthranilamide-derived ω-Conotoxin GVIA mimetics bearing the diphenylmethylpiperazine moiety were prepared and tested using three experimental measures of calcium channel blockade. These consisted of a 125I-ω-conotoxin GVIA displacement assay, a fluorescence-based calcium response assay with SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells, and a whole-cell patch clamp electrophysiology assay with HEK293 cells stably expressing human Cav2.2 channels. A subset of compounds were active in all three assays. This is the first time that compounds designed to be mimics of ω-conotoxin GVIA and found to be active in the 125I-ω-conotoxin GVIA displacement assay have also been shown to block functional ion channels in a dose-dependent manner

    Voice, autonomy and utopian desire in participatory film-making with young refugees

    This article is a reflection on what reflexive documentary scholars call the ‘moral dimension’ (Nash 2012: 318) of a participatory filmmaking project with refugee young people, who wanted to make a film to support other new young arrivals in the process of making home in Scotland. In the first part, we highlight some of the challenges of collaborating with refugee young people, in light of the often de-humanising representations of refugees in mainstream media and the danger of the triple conflation of authenticity-voice-pain in academic narratives about refugees. In the second part, we show how honouring young people’s desire to convey the hopeful aspects of making home, emerged as a key pedagogical strategy to affirm their expert position and encourage their participation in the project. Revisiting key moments of learning and interaction, we demonstrate how young people’s process of ‘finding a voice’ in moment-by-moment filmmaking practice was not a linear, developmental process towards ‘pure’ individual empowerment and singular artistic expression. Their participation in shaping their visual (self-)representation in the final film, was embedded in the dialogical process and pragmatic requirements of a collaborative film production, in which voice, autonomy and teacher authority were negotiated on a moment-by-moment basis. We conclude that it is vital for a reflexive practice and research to not gloss over the moral dilemmas in the name of progressive ideals, for example, when representations are co-created by project filmmakers/educators, but embrace these deliberations as part of the ‘fascinating collaborative matrix’ (Chambers 2019: 29) of participatory filmmaking
